From the peaceful setting of The Art League gallery, viewers step into the virtual jail cell of an incarcerated youth. As viewers adjust to the cell, a young man’s voice shares the story of his incarceration and the emotional shock of his experience. The background sounds of alarms and yelling punctuate his monologue.
Virtual Reality Experience
The virtual reality experience, Detained 3’x30”, a brief but immersive video is powerful enough to transport the viewer into the daily realities of incarceration. On the gallery walls, works of different media and scale fill the exhibit room. The show is not meant to feel contained to the space it is shown in. The interactive elements invite viewers to “leave” the gallery and step directly into the experiences of incarcerated youth. A short documentary, spoken word pieces, posters, and even police training manuals created by kids affected by youth incarceration policies speak directly to gallery goers.

Statistics to know
This exhibit is a direct response to the school-to-prison pipeline crisis that our country is facing today. According to performingstatistics.org:
If current trends continue, one of every three black men will be incarcerated in their lives
Virginia incarcerates more than 10,000 youth each year, nearly half of whom between just 8 and 15 years old
Virginia refers children to the juvenile justice system at a higher rate than ANY state in the country
We spend 15 times more on incarcerating Virginia’s youth than on educating them
The exhibit’s curator and project organizer, Mark Strandquist, was called to action after learning about the school-to-prison pipeline and the disproportionate incarceration rates of minority youth. While Mark had previously created artwork that was political in content/subject, his work had not yet evolved into the greater social effort that is today. Mark believes his role as an artist is to find ways to use art as a tool for positive social change.
This project is a combination of education, creative expression, direct action, and community outreach. Mark has cohesively combined these elements into an ongoing, growing effort to end the school-to-prison pipeline.
The work shown in this exhibit was created by a group of incarcerated youth from the Richmond Juvenile Detention Center’s Post-Dispositional Program. Each summer in Richmond, Virginia these young people work with local artists from the community art space Art180 and lawyers from the Legal Aid Justice Center to produce powerful work addressing their own experiences within the school-to-prison pipeline.
This work is presented to the public as well as to local law enforcement. Dialogues facilitated by Mark Strandquist and others allow for two very different groups within society to meet and share ideas, when they might otherwise have not had to opportunity to.
Outreach and Reform
One of the most powerful projects created during the summer program is the publishing of police training manuals, written by incarcerated youth. These manuals address the need for understanding the systemic flaws that allow the school-to-prison pipeline to continue. They also, most importantly, address the need for law enforcement to have experience working with youth outside of the context of the prison system, to see them as valuable member of society who deserves to be lifted up and encouraged to succeed, not to be held back by circumstances often beyond their control.
The driving belief behind this project is the importance of listening to and learning from incarcerated members of society, to see them as the experts in the conversation surrounding the prison system. They are the most important and relevant voices in answering the question: “How can we keep kids free?”
With access to the right resources and support system, this project puts forth that every child in society can flourish and reach his/her full potential, regardless of socioeconomic background or personal trauma. Viewers are asked to examine their own understanding of the school-to-prison pipeline, to question whether they truly know the facts. The projects created by these youths include work that illustrates their struggle, as well as their hopes for their future outside of prison.

The LUX Center for the Arts: 2019-2020 Residencies (NE)
Deadline: April 4. The LUX Center for the Arts in Lincoln, Nebraska is currently accepting applications for 2019-2020 year long residencies in all media. A strong desire to teach is required. Artists with more than one area of expertise and an MFA are preferred. This residency can be extended an additional year if both the LUX and the artist agree. Project “Cerrado Ecoarte” Art Residency (Brazil)
Deadline: January 18-February 20. The registration for the artistic residence “Cerrado Ecoarte 2019” are open. Artists from anywhere in the world who work in any artistic medium can apply. The residency program is part of a master’s research for the multimedia artist TKuri and is linked to the Graduate Program in Visual Arts at the University of Brasilia under the supervision of Christus Nóbrega. The purpose of this residence is to provide an immersive experience in the Cerrado, a unique biome because of its diversity and of strategic importance for the conservation of important Brazilian rivers. The selected artists will be housed for 10 days in the Botanical Garden of Brasilia (JBB), during the month of July. Meanwhile, they will participate in workshops, lectures and discussions on topics related to ecology, environmental conservation, alternative nutrition, phytotherapy, biodiversity and cultural history of the cerrado, among others. Deadline: Rolling. This column is the journal’s longest-running feature. It is published on two facing pages. The left-hand page features an excerpt from literature, a poem, a photograph, etc. Literature excerpts generally run no more than 700 words and may include a very brief introduction as needed. The right-hand page presents an original commentary of about 900 words that explores the relevance of the artwork to the teaching, learning, and/or practice of medicine. What are we raising funds for?
The Patrons’ Show Fundraiser is critical to ensuring The Art League is able to fulfill its mission each year. Funds go to:
our gallery and education programs, providing valuable exposure, education and experience for artists at all levels
The Art League is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, which means that your donation is tax-deductible. Currently, the IRS allows artists to deduct only the cost of materials used in donated artwork, not the artwork’s full value.

Project “Cerrado Ecoarte” Art Residency (Brazil)
Deadline: January 18-February 20. The registration for the artistic residence “Cerrado Ecoarte 2019” are open. Artists from anywhere in the world who work in any artistic medium can apply. The residency program is part of a master’s research for the multimedia artist TKuri and is linked to the Graduate Program in Visual Arts at the University of Brasilia under the supervision of Christus Nóbrega. The purpose of this residence is to provide an immersive experience in the Cerrado, a unique biome because of its diversity and of strategic importance for the conservation of important Brazilian rivers. The selected artists will be housed for 10 days in the Botanical Garden of Brasilia (JBB), during the month of July. Meanwhile, they will participate in workshops, lectures and discussions on topics related to ecology, environmental conservation, alternative nutrition, phytotherapy, biodiversity and cultural history of the cerrado, among others. Theodore Carter: Night of 1,000 Fridas (DC)
Deadline: January 25. D.C. artists participating in the global Night of 1,000 Fridas project are eligible for cash rewards of up to $250. To qualify, artists must create original artworks inspired by Frida Kahlo and place them in public view in Washington, D.C. on January 25, 2019. Works of art must include the “1KFridas” hashtag. This is a worldwide event, but only artwork displayed in D.C. is eligible for the cash prize. Entries will be judged by a panel formed by the project’s organizer, Theodore Carter, and judged based on impact on the public, the number of Fridas submitted, originality of the concept, and overall execution. 1st Prize: $250, 2nd Prize: $200, 3rd Prize: $150. Call for Content: Appalachian Futures (WV)
Deadline: January 31. WVU Libraries is developing an interdisciplinary exhibit for 2019-20 themed around Appalachian Futures. Content is sought from scholars, artists and practitioners from a range of fields to integrate into a curated exhibition that will be interpreted, designed, and installed next spring/summer, and potentially travel throughout the state. This collaborative, multidisciplinary exhibit and programming will address the dominant contemporary narratives about Appalachia in a new way— how the people of Appalachia have worked and will work to rewrite their own narrative and transcend limiting definitions of what it means to be Appalachian. The exhibit will use scholarship and creations to tell stories about the broader ideas and relationships amongst the various Appalachian identities, past present and into the future. Following our most successful year ever in 2018, we are delighted to announce an array of brand-new prizes for 2019 offering more chances than ever for winning illustrators to gain recognition and opportunities for career growth. Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) Boardwalk Art Show (VA)
Deadline: January 31 (late fee period). The Boardwalk Art Show (June 13-16, 2019) is one of the oldest and best outdoor fine art shows on the East Coast, and this year will mark our 64th year! The show is consistently ranked in Sunshine Artist Magazine as a top 50 best fine art show. With an average attendance each year of more than 225,000, this four-day festival attracts collectors and artists from across the nation. Call to Artists DC Public Library Request for Public Art – MLK Library (DC)
Deadline: February 1. The District of Columbia Public Library (DCPL) Public Art Program is issuing a Request for Proposals (RFP) from individual artists, designers or art/design teams to create a two-dimensional artwork. The work will be a vinyl decal design applied to the interior glass walls of the main entrance of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial (Central) Library, at 901 G St. NW, in conjunction with a major modernization project to be completed in 2020. The artwork for this space should be a creative visual interpretation of Dr. King’s legacy as it connects to the Library, and which reflects multiple perspectives from D.C. communities. The selected artist will be required to create two public engagement programs at neighborhood libraries that inform some aspect of the design and/or creative process. 76th Regional Exhibition Call for Entries (NY)
Deadline: February 6. The Arnot Art Museum announces a call for artists for their 76th Regional Exhibition. Artists must be 18 or older and live in Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, or Vermont. Work over five years old or shown before in any Arnot Art Museum exhibition is not eligible. There is a maximum of two entries per artist. Spark Box Studio Dawson Residency Award and Bursary (Canada)
Deadline: March 1, 2019. This award is open to residents of North America. Spark Box Studio is accepting applications from emerging, mid-career, and established artists. One artist will receive a month-long residency at our studio in Prince Edward County, plus the $1,000 Dawson bursary. The selected applicant will be granted a semi-private studio space and be given access to the Spark Box Studio equipment and resources. As well, the winner will be provided with living accommodations for their month-long stay. The 40th Annual Virginia Watercolor Society Juried Exhibition 2019 (VA)
Deadline: March 2. Paintings in watercolor and other watermedia including water soluble ink on paper or Yupo. No canvas, digital, computer generated or Gicleé art. If other media are used, water based media must dominate the piece. Collage elements will be accepted if the adhered paper pieces are painted in watermedia by the artist. No computer generated, digital or printed clippings will be allowed. All paintings must have been completed on or after January 1, 2015 and not have been painted under supervision. Artist/Writers: Cover Art for Academic Medicine
Deadline: Rolling. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. Artist/Writers: Medicine and the Arts (MATA) Opportunity
Deadline: Rolling. This column is the journal’s longest-running feature. It is published on two facing pages. The left-hand page features an excerpt from literature, a poem, a photograph, etc. Literature excerpts generally run no more than 700 words and may include a very brief introduction as needed. The right-hand page presents an original commentary of about 900 words that explores the relevance of the artwork to the teaching, learning, and/or practice of medicine. Since submissions cannot be fully accepted for publication until Academic Medicine acquires permission to reprint literary excerpts or artworks (which often takes many months), authors should include all relevant information about the piece they are explicating (publisher, museum, dates, etc.) to enable staff editors to find and contact the copyright holder. The Awesome Foundation Accepting Applications for Art Projects

Last night we celebrated our first Art Trivia Night in partnership with Port City Brewing. The evening opened with samples from Port City Brewing and exploring our January exhibits.
We kept the beers and art trivia flowing all night, as well as delicious snacks on hand for our trivia whizzes. Ten teams joined us including: Trump Oy, Pop People, The Abstractionists, The Furloughed, The Triptychs, McMaster, The Gestures, Old Town Green, Henry, and Master Fartist.
Team “Trump Oy” eventually reigned supreme and won the coveted Banksy-shredder-incident-inspired trophy, while second place and third place winners, Pop People and The Abstractionists, took home gift cards and swag from The Art League and Port City Brewing.
The “Most Creative Team Name” went to the very topical, “The Furloughed,” who took home their own Magritte-inspired trophy. While last place winner went to one-woman-team “Master Fartist,” who took home the Van Gogh Otology injury trophy. Justin Lawrence won the raffle to take home the Art League’s interpretation of Jeff Koon’s Tulip Bouquet trophy.

Spark Box Studio Dawson Residency Award and Bursary (Canada)

The 40th Annual Virginia Watercolor Society Juried Exhibition 2019 (VA)

The left-hand page features an excerpt from literature, a poem, a photograph, etc. Literature excerpts generally run no more than 700 words and may include a very brief introduction as needed. The right-hand page presents an original commentary of about 900 words that explores the relevance of the artwork to the teaching, learning, and/or practice of medicine. The Art League makes a trip to the sunny Bahamas each year in February, and painters of all media join to paint en plein air (because sun and sand make for better conditions than snow and wind) in one of our travel workshops. Instructor Susan O’Neill will guide the group this year.

Visit and paint the beautiful Elbow Cay, located just off the cost of West Palm Beach, Florida, which features spectacular white sand beaches and aquamarine waters, as well as pastel clap-board cottages, and white picket fences overflowing with tropical foliage. O’Neill will lead the group for five days of inspiring plein-air watercolor painting to fully capture the light, colors and rhythms of the Bahamas.

John Murray’s “Artistic Anatomical Drawing” class could be bone dry. But instead of lectures akin to medical school discourse, Murray incorporates figurative work and his breadth of knowledge of the human body to make figurative work really move.

Murray, whose design of Abraham Lincoln graces the $5 bill in your pocket, has a history of artistic anatomical work spanning more than 20 years. His interest in anatomy comes from a keen curiosity in art, rather than a medical background—a detail that keeps his course from becoming a medical illustration class and instead elevates students’ figurative work across mediums. This class focuses on improving drawing the human body, but sculptors and painters can also benefit from the innate knowledge of the human body that Murray imparts.

“By the end of the class,” says Murray, “students should have a fairly comprehensive knowledge of human musculature.” Students will work with models, creating gestural drawings, learning anatomical drawing strategies, and watching demonstrations as they perfect their art.

While it may not seem like something that all artists should pursue, anatomy is something that has been so highly sought after by the great artists of history that they went to extremes to study it further. In the early 16th century, Leonardo da Vinci, prohibited from using human cadavers to sketch, had to steal his subjects from recent graves or pay off the hospital director to let him sit in on dissections. Michelangelo, faced with the same constraint, was allowed to use the bodies of convicted criminals as a convenient loophole to the church’s ruling on dissection of bodies.

These days, working with live models is much more palatable. “Artistic Anatomical Drawing” allows students the opportunity to dive into anatomical work, without the trip to the morgue.

The Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts (BOPA): 14th annual Janet & Walter Sondheim Artscape Prize

Theodore Carter: Night of 1,000 Fridas (DC)
Deadline: January 25. D.C. artists participating in the global Night of 1,000 Fridas project are eligible for cash rewards of up to $250. To qualify, artists must create original artworks inspired by Frida Kahlo and place them in public view in Washington, D.C. on January 25, 2019. Works of art must include the “1KFridas” hashtag. This is a worldwide event, but only artwork displayed in D.C. is eligible for the cash prize. Entries will be judged by a panel formed by the project’s organizer, Theodore Carter, and judged based on impact on the public, the number of Fridas submitted, originality of the concept, and overall execution. 1st Prize: $250, 2nd Prize: $200, 3rd Prize: $150. Call for Content: Appalachian Futures (WV)
Deadline: January 31. WVU Libraries is developing an interdisciplinary exhibit for 2019-20 themed around Appalachian Futures. Content is sought from scholars, artists and practitioners from a range of fields to integrate into a curated exhibition that will be interpreted, designed, and installed next spring/summer, and potentially travel throughout the state. This collaborative, multidisciplinary exhibit and programming will address the dominant contemporary narratives about Appalachia in a new way— how the people of Appalachia have worked and will work to rewrite their own narrative and transcend limiting definitions of what it means to be Appalachian. The exhibit will use scholarship and creations to tell stories about the broader ideas and relationships amongst the various Appalachian identities, past present and into the future. Deadline: February 6. The Arnot Art Museum announces a call for artists for their 76th Regional Exhibition. Artists must be 18 or older and live in Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, or Vermont. Work over five years old or shown before in any Arnot Art Museum exhibition is not eligible. There is a maximum of two entries per artist. Spark Box Studio Dawson Residency Award and Bursary (Canada)
Deadline: March 1, 2019. This award is open to residents of North America. Spark Box Studio is accepting applications from emerging, mid-career, and established artists. One artist will receive a month-long residency at our studio in Prince Edward County, plus the $1,000 Dawson bursary. The selected applicant will be granted a semi-private studio space and be given access to the Spark Box Studio equipment and resources. As well, the winner will be provided with living accommodations for their month-long stay. The 40th Annual Virginia Watercolor Society Juried Exhibition 2019 (VA)
Deadline: March 2. Paintings in watercolor and other watermedia including water soluble ink on paper or Yupo. No canvas, digital, computer generated or Gicleé art. If other media are used, water based media must dominate the piece. Collage elements will be accepted if the adhered paper pieces are painted in watermedia by the artist. The UMW Galleries accept proposals from professional artists and curators for solo and group exhibitions for each of our gallery spaces (Ridderhof Martin Gallery and duPont Gallery). Deadline: Rolling. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. Artist/Writers: Medicine and the Arts (MATA) Opportunity
Deadline: Rolling. This column is the journal’s longest-running feature. It is published on two facing pages. The left-hand page features an excerpt from literature, a poem, a photograph, etc. Literature excerpts generally run no more than 700 words and may include a very brief introduction as needed. The right-hand page presents an original commentary of about 900 words that explores the relevance of the artwork to the teaching, learning, and/or practice of medicine. Since submissions cannot be fully accepted for publication until Academic Medicine acquires permission to reprint literary excerpts or artworks (which often takes many months), authors should include all relevant information about the piece they are explicating (publisher, museum, dates, etc.) to enable staff editors to find and contact the copyright holder.
