Deadline: September 10 By re-using metals in art, the artist gives them a second life. For this exhibit, artists are invited to create artworks that include metal, possibly combining non-traditional materials, e.g., car parts, cast-off metals, building materials, household hand tools, and office supplies, with traditional media. Deadline: September 12 Color has always possessed a dual nature, representing the heights of feeling and emotion while at the same time seen as a scientific, empirical phenomenon, arising from the physical world. Color, as an independent visual language, exploded in contemporary art, moving beyond the binary of spiritual truth and nature, and into the worlds of advertisement, repetition, and digital life more broadly. Deadline: September 18 The City of Norfolk seeks to commission an artist to design and create exterior artwork for Huntersville Park in Norfolk, Virginia. Multiple pedestrian-scale artwork that tell the story of the neighborhood and encourage walkers to visually explore around the new recreational path around the grass practice football fields are imagined. Deadline: September 22 Hillyer is accepting proposals for solo and group exhibitions that take place between January and December of 2024. Through a competitive selection process, 25 to 30 artists and/or curators will be awarded a one month solo or group exhibition in one of Hillyer’s three gallery spaces. In exchange for working 12 volunteer hours a month for Pyramid, the Printmaking Associate will have 24-hour access to studios and equipment and receive a 40% discount on most workshops. Deadline: August 10 For this open art competition, all artwork entries must display a visual interpretation of some aspect of Freemasonry in Pennsylvania, whether it be philosophical, historical, scientific, social, fraternal, charitable, architectural, etc. Selected artwork will be exhibited in the Masonic Temple in Philadelphia. Constructed in 1873, the Masonic Temple has become one of the great “wonders” of the Masonic world. Adorned with some of the finest artifacts of Freemasonry and magnificent lodge rooms based on themes of the ancient architectural world. The Masonic Temple connects us with our past by outwardly displaying our Masonic traditions and values. Located within the Masonic Temple is the Masonic Library & Museum of Pennsylvania, which houses thousands of texts and artifacts relating to the history of the fraternity in the Commonwealth and the founding of our great nation. Deadline: August 10 The Bethesda Urban Partnership and Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District announce the “Call for Artists” for visual artists interested in renting Gallery B in 2024. They offer the opportunity for you to sell and receive exposure in downtown Bethesda with no commission on any artwork that is sold. Deadline: August 11 Wheaton Arts Parade (WAP) is seeking the services of an event planner to help produce the 7th Annual Wheaton Arts Parade & Festival on October 15, 2023. WAP will provide site plans and manage registration, including the identification of vendors, exhibitors, performers, parade participants, and volunteers. Contractor will manage all logistical aspects related to (1) the parade, (2) the festival art vendors, exhibitors and food/beverage vendors, and (3) the festival entertainment. Deadline: August 11 This group exhibition is open to trans, queer, gender non conforming and gender expansive artists of the DC area. The goal of this exhibition is to highlight the multifaceted nature of the trans, queer, and nonbinary experience: To vent our struggles, profess our joys and euphorias, and to be heard in our journeys. Deadline: August 12 Artists are invited to submit existing or new sculptures, and site-specific installations that fit the theme. You are welcome to take the theme and explore any metaphors in nature, society, politics, etc. Go wild! But provide a point of reference for your viewer/participant. Deadline: August 13 The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Prince George’s Department of Parks and Recreation invites Artists (meaning both individual artists and artist teams) with interest and professional experience in creating public art and site-specific commissions, to submit qualifications for exterior public art features at the Marlow Heights Community Center. Deadline: August 14 The Juried Exhibition Grant (JEG) provides support for District-based artists to exhibit their work in a juried, themed visual art exhibition. In addition to the award, it also provides the use of the 200 I Street SE lobby exhibition space. This Request for Applications seeks works for an exhibition that will reflect on the Civil Rights Act of 1964 during its 60th year anniversary in 2024 and how DC artists have been influenced, both explicitly and implicitly, by the social progress and reform of the past 60 years. This landmark legislation aimed to prohibit discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. By exploring this significant milestone, the exhibition seeks to provide insight into the progress, challenges, and ongoing efforts toward achieving equity and social justice. Deadline: August 18 The VSA Emerging Young Artists Program, a Jean Kennedy Smith Arts and Disability Program, showcases the work of visual artists with disabilities, ages 16-25, who reside in the United States. Fifteen winning artists are selected by a jury. Each winning artist receives a $5,000 award and has one of their submitted pieces selected to travel in a year-long national exhibition. Winning artists are required to attend an all-expenses-paid professional development workshop at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. February 26-29, 2024. Deadline: August 18 Golden Triangle Business Improvement District (BID), a 501(c)6 corporation that works to enhance the 44-block radius that stretches from Washington, DC’s Dupont Circle to Pennsylvania Avenue, seeks a Director of Public Art and Creative Activation to reimagine the vitality of the Golden Triangle neighborhood through the use of art and design. Deadline: September 4 The Arts and Cultural Heritage Division (ACHD) of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Prince George’s Department of Parks and Recreation invites individual artists and artist teams to submit applications for exterior sculptural artwork to be installed on a temporary basis at the Montpelier Arts Center in Laurel, Maryland. Deadline: September 10 The Washington Sculptors Group is excited to partner with The Kreeger Museum for an exhibition of outdoor work. Artists are invited to submit images of existing sculptures and installations to this call for works that reflect the role of art in our contemporary moment. Artists may also submit proposals for new site-specific installations. All work must be suitable for being outdoors for a period of several months without the need for maintenance. Deadline: September 27 The 2024 NCECA Juried Student Exhibition is open to undergraduate, graduate, and post-baccalaureate students enrolled in the United States of America, Canada, and Mexico. Deadline: September 29 From juror Mike Jabbur: “As I consider applications, I have no preference for a single style or approach. I hope to see examples that emphasize practical form and function, sculptural exploration that maintains functionality, and metaphorical teapots that may not function at all—the so-called “teapot as sculpture.” I welcome teapots made with any clay bodies, firing methods, and forming processes. Deadline: November 12 The Sparkplug Artists’ Collective is a one-year program that serves as a much-needed resource for artists seeking to establish, reignite, or sustain a professional art career. The collective provides a fertile environment for continued artistic and professional growth by providing mentorship, support, workshops, critiques, juries, art excursions, and coveted art exhibition opportunities in The DC Arts Center’s Main Gallery. We’re particularly keen to recruit new hires for our sculpture, stained glass, and watercolor departments. Preferred applicants will have a personable and patient disposition, excellent communication skills, and the ability to teach their medium to groups of beginning, intermediate, and/or advanced level students. Class sizes range, depending on enrollment, from around 5 to 30 students. Experience teaching is helpful but not an absolute requirement. Busboys and Poets is looking for submissions from Maryland and Virginia artists as it expands to new locations in both areas. The Alper Initiative for Washington Art features five exhibitions per year in the newly constructed first floor space in the American University Museum. The Hamilton Arts Collective (HAC) and the Hamilton Gallery seek applications from artists for month-long Guest Artist exhibitions at Hamilton Gallery located at 5502 Harford Road, Baltimore, MD. The selected guest artists will be invited to exhibit a selection of their current work in Gallery I of the Hamilton Gallery. The Creativity Grant also provides opportunities to serve the growing needs of relevant arts projects and collaborations within Maryland communities. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is a worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of “awesomeness in the universe.” Established in 2009, the foundation distributes $1,000 grants on a monthly basis to projects and their creators. The money is pooled from ten or more self-organizing “micro-trustees.” The chapters are autonomous and organized by the trustees around geographic areas or topics of interest. This opportunity is great for both established and early career artists who need a boost to their artist portfolio. The 10th edition will once again explore and show current trends and tendencies in Contemporary Art: Peripheral ARTeries cultivates a spirit of openness through a unique collaborative and participatory approach.Each artist may submit a maximum of three works or projects made in any technique: painting, drawing, video art, experimental cinema, fine art photography, experimental media, mixed media, installations, public art, performance.
