Intersections by Rifat S. Taher
A Sense on Symmetry by Rifat S. Taher; Acrylic
In her solo exhibition Intersections, artist Rifat S. Taher explores geometric forms using a variety of mediums inspired by traditional Islamic art and architecture. Her works are an exploration of patterns focusing on the underlying grid, mathematical order, and the contemplative nature of geometry. Through meticulous repetition, and spatial constructs, Taher draws on the timeless relevance of these forms and the wisdom of traditional art through her creative process. Art All Night
Art All Night, the District’s annual overnight arts festival, returns the weekend! This free event will be held across all eight wards Friday, September 29 and 30, 2023, from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. More than 100 local artists and 20 Main Streets and Business Improvement Districts are participating. “I’ve always been fascinated with geological formations,” says award-winning painter Anne Stine. “I see the planet as a living thing, constantly adapting, and telling its story for eons to come.” In Every Rock Has a Story, Stine’s collection of 20 geological paintings at Athenaeum Gallery, she explores the interconnection between earth and humanity through representational and abstract imagery. The organic and upcycled materials show their reverence for the environment, and remind us just how essential this region is to the entire globe’s well-being. Artist/Writers: Cover Art for Academic Medicine
Deadline: Rolling. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. The Awesome Foundation Accepting Applications for Art Projects

The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is a worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of “awesomeness in the universe.” Established in 2009, the foundation distributes $1,000 grants on a monthly basis to projects and their creators. The money is pooled from ten or more self-organizing “micro-trustees.” The chapters are autonomous and organized by the trustees around geographic areas or topics of interest. In her solo exhibition Intersections, artist Rifat S. Taher explores geometric forms using a variety of mediums inspired by traditional Islamic art and architecture. Her works are an exploration of patterns focusing on the underlying grid, mathematical order, and the contemplative nature of geometry. Through meticulous repetition, and spatial constructs, Taher draws on the timeless relevance of these forms and the wisdom of traditional art through her creative process.

PROGRESSION, a collaborative exhibition at Multiple Exposures Gallery, features a sequence of photographs, each one chosen for its relation to the previous image. The relationships among the images may be based on composition, color, geography or any other characteristic — the choice was left to the fourteen individual artists who added their images to the exhibition in sequence over a series of four rounds. Exhibition visitors are invited to observe each image as it appears in the sequence and consider what the connection to the previous image might have been. Fields, a joint exhibition by painters Eve Troncone and Jean Schlesinger at the Yellow Barn Gallery, is an exploration of the landscape, from brilliant flowers to verdant fields and polo fields, bulls, barns and open skies. Schlesinger, from Bethesda, Maryland, and Troncone, from Milton, New York, have collaborated over the last year to bring the “fields” to life, including painting in the Hudson Valley region. Troncone’s Zinnias and Schlesinger’s Gardiner Field are two of the works on display reflecting that region. Fields opens with a reception Friday, September 22, from 6 – 8 p.m.; and will be on view through September 24.

The Arts Club of Washington presents works by Milanese-born, D.C.-based photographer Dario Zucchifor their September 2023 exhibition. Zucchi brilliantly investigates the relationship between a work of art and its viewer, drawing connections between color, shape and texture. In his quest for balance in the image, he also seeks emotional balance and seeks to convey a sense of serenity and pleasure through the enjoyment of visual beauty. Artist/Writers: Cover Art for Academic Medicine
Deadline: Rolling. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. The Awesome Foundation Accepting Applications for Art Projects

The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is a worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of “awesomeness in the universe.” Established in 2009, the foundation distributes $1,000 grants on a monthly basis to projects and their creators. Farther Afield, at Del Ray Artisans Gallery, takes this notion literally by celebrating artwork that takes us outside of our day-to-day lives to locations far and wide. Whether depicting a scene from a day trip or from halfway across the world, these artworks transport the viewer away from Alexandria to new cities, states, countries, and continents. Crushed, Scraped and Salvaged

This exhibition presents an unexpected grouping of artists—Louise Nevelson, Armand Pierre Fernandez, John Chamberlain, Nancy Graves, Robert Rauschenberg, Carroll Sockwell—united by their transformative use of found objects in their artistic practice. Bethesda Fine Art is proud to bring together these major artists — of varying ethnicities and gender — who salvaged items such as scrap metal, wood, discarded tools, old newspapers or everyday objects from their environment and gave rise to expressionist reliefs and sculptures known as “assemblage art.” Crushed, Scraped and Salvaged is on view through October 31; 4931 Cordell Avenue, Bethesda, Maryland.

Artist/Writers: Cover Art for Academic Medicine
Deadline: Rolling. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. The Awesome Foundation Accepting Applications for Art Projects
