July 2024 Open Exhibit
Experience the authentic creativity of member artists through Open Exhibits at The Art League. This collection—92 artworks in all— boasts a vibrant mix of painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and mixed media. The July 2024 Open Exhibit, meticulously curated by respected artist and William & Mary professor, Elizabeth Mead, is a testament to the passion and talent within our artistic community.
Vanishing by Holly Cole
Holly Cole’s enchanting exhibit, Vanishing, is a heartfelt tribute to the disappearing species on our planet. Drawing inspiration from the resilience of endangered animals, she creates breathtaking sculptures and quilts using surplus military fabric and sheers. Through her art, Holly warmly highlights the pressing issues of fast-vanishing habitats, trophy hunting, and shifting climates, inviting us all to take a closer look at the world we share with these magnificent creatures.
July exhibits at The Art League are on view through August 4.
National Small Works
Washington Printmakers Gallery presents the 26th year of the National Small Works Show. The exhibit honors Peggy Doole (1934-2021), long-time resident of the DC area who shared her love of art by giving lectures, sponsoring exhibits, and leading tours at the Hirshhorn, the National Gallery of Art, and other museums throughout Europe and the U.S. Her post-graduate museum work led her to a focus on, and a special passion for, printmaking. The exhibition includes 36 pieces—fine art prints, photographs, and printed objects chosen by our juror Ann Shafer, an independent curator, art historian and writer. It is on view through August 25, with reception and awards ceromony Saturday, August 10, from 2–5 p.m.; 1675 Wisconsin Ave. NW, Washington, D.C.
Candy Coated by Megan Maher
In Candy Coated, at Artist & Makers Studio, artist Megan Maher creates a visual playground of irregular looping lines that invite us to rediscover the color orange. This new series of paintings and drawings centers on the artist’s distinctive “squiggle,” inviting viewers to embrace their inner child and delight in the act of viewing. Candy Coated is on view through August 28. Join Maher for an artist talk Saturdya, August 17, from 1–3 p.m.; 11810 Parklawn Drive, Suite 210, Rockville, Maryland.
Iteration Reiteration
Patterns and repetitive elements, integral to the art and design of countless cultures and artistic methods, offer viewers a framework to interpret information through recurring arrangements. This open call solicited artwork that embraces pattern and repetition as the focal point, a complementary element within a piece, or as a fundamental part of the creative process. From symmetrical arrangements, geometric precision, minimalist repetition, and organic flows, Iteration Reiteration honors the power of patterns. Iteration Reiteration is on view at Touchstone Gallery through September 2; 901 New York Ave NW,
Washington, D.C.
Enjoy the weekend!
