Strauss Fellowships for Individual Artists

Named for Bill Strauss (1947-2007), gifted writer, co-founder of the Capitol Steps and the Cappies, the Strauss Fellowships for Individual Artists support and encourage Fairfax County’s finest creative artists in all disciplines and recognize professional working artists’ achievements and their demonstrated history of accomplishments; they promote artists’ continued pursuit of their creative work.

Glenview Mansion Art Gallery – 2010 Exhibits

Open to all artists living and/or working in Maryland, DC and Virginia. A juried selection process will be implemented through which all applications are reviewed by a panel of artists and art professionals. The panel will select artists and create exhibits to be placed into the 2010 calendar schedule. An exhibit may reflect selection of one or more applicants. Group applications accepted.

Call for Artists: When Harlem Came to Paris

LiL SoSo Productions in cooperation with Authentic Contemporary Art and several co-sponsors will be partnering with the Alliance Française de Washington to celebrate the influence of African Americans in France with the multi-media arts event: When Harlem Came to Paris, Saturday, February 28, 2009 in Washington, DC.

Themes may include:

-African influences on art and culture of Paris
-Café scenes of Paris in the 1920s and 1930s
-Nightclub and Entertainment of Paris in the 1920s and 1930s

December Award Winners

Last Thursday, December 11, 22 artists were awarded honors at the opening reception for the December All-Media Membership Show.

Valentina by Teresa Oaxaca received The Marker Award for Best in Show. Juror Fritz Briggs of the Schuler School of Art in Baltimore commented that, “the anatomy is perfect” in this piece. The John Prignano Memorial Award went to Rachel B. Collins for Brassica Bravura. Briggs felt that, “the patterns in this piece are interesting.”

42nd Annual Patrons’ Show Fundraiser

The Patrons’ Show is The Art League’s biggest fundraising event of the year. It affords the public an opportunity to acquire quality works of fine art while supporting a local non-profit and a community of artists.

We ask each member to donate artwork for this important fundraiser. The gallery will accept donations of artwork at any time. For each work of art donated valued at $175 or more, we are able to sell an additional $175 ticket to the event.

Artists may donate any number of framed pieces. Artists who donate two or more framed pieces may donate as many additional unframed works as they like, which we will frame for you.

This is an excellent opportunity to have your work seen by thousands of captive visitors. Last year’s Patrons’ Show Flickr site alone has had over 14,000 hits.

Dates to remember:

Tickets Go On Sale: Saturday, January 17, 2009 at 10 am

  • Limit of 2 tickets per person on first day of ticket sales.

Receiving Dates: February 2 & 3, 10 am – 6 pm

Dates of Show: February 4 – 15, 2009

  • Patrons may come during this time to view and evaluate the work and note their favorite pieces.

Late Hours for Viewing:

  • Thursday, February 5, 6 – 9 pm

Drawing: Sunday, February 15, 5 pm

  • Tickets are randomly drawn and the name of the ticket holder is announced. At this time, the ticket holder may call out the number of the piece they want to select. For each ticket drawn, ticket holders will go home with a work of art valued anywhere from $175 to upwards of thousands of dollars.

Big Weekend

This Thursday through Sunday is packed with great holiday events at The Art League and The Torpedo Factory.

The December All-Media Membership show is up in The Art League Gallery, along with Virtue, Sin and the Balance Within, the December solo show from ceramic artist Carlos Beltran Baldiviezo. The artist explores the ancient tradition of balancing the tension between the Seven Deadly Sins and the Seven Heavenly Virtues. Each of the seven pairs of fourteen ceramic sculptures embodies a Sin and its corresponding Virtue. Some pieces are whimsical and playful, others serious and stoic, some humorous, obvious, or elusive.

The bin gallery theme this month is “Children’s Hour.” Bin gallery members are not restricted to this theme, but there will be a special wall designated for it.

For this exhibit, 250 pieces were entered with 96 accepted by juror Beth Baldwin, Art Bank Coordinator for the DC Commission for the Arts and Humanities. Ms. Baldwin chose the following award winners:

Upcoming Calls to Artists at The Art League

This Monday, November 24, we will be accepting holiday ornaments in the gallery from 10 am-6pm. This year’s theme is Celebrate Alexandria! It is not necessary to solely produce images of Alexandria, but we do find that Old Town scenes tend to sell out quickly.

Ornaments will be displayed on an artificial tree in the gallery from November 26 – December 31. Gallery staff will replace ornaments as they sell. Unsold ornaments not picked up by January 2 will be donated to charity. There is no entry fee and no limit on the number of entries. Artists will receive a 75% commission on ornament sales.

The following Monday, December 1 starts receiving for the December All-Media Membership Show from 6:30 pm – 8:30pm. You may also drop off work between 10 am and 12 noon on Tuesday, December 2.

Since we have recently received a number of pieces submitted for jurying which have not met The Art League’s framing requirements, we will have copies of the new framing requirements available in the gallery by December 1.

This Thursday at The Art League Gallery

This Thursday, November 13 is Second Thursday Art Night in Old Town and the reception for The Art League Gallery’s November juried Large Works Show, small works show, and fotoweek @ the art league.

For fotoweek, jurors Jim Steel and Craig Sterling chose the following award winners:

In the Large Works Show, 6 artists were awarded Honorable Mention. They are:

Ted Reed‘s End of the Beginning [shown right] received The Eleanor Boudreau Jordan Award for the “great drama created by the palette, lighting and composition,” said juror Glenn Perry. Space @ Touchstone

“My Space on 7th”

Opening Reception:
Friday, January 9, 2009 6-8:30pm

My Space on 7th is a NON-JURIED exhibition opportunity for wall-hung and floor space (3d) artwork in any medium. The main gallery and two Annex spaces will be used for this event – 106 wall spaces, each comprised of approximately 22 square feet. There are 5 floor spaces for 3d artwork.

Registration is currently OPEN. Only e-mail registrations to [email protected] with a subject line of My Space Registration will be accepted. Please e-mail your name, number of spaces and space preference LETTER AND NUMBER (see diagrams on site) and your contact phone number. Phone call and in-person registrations will not be accepted. Artists may purchase more than one space. The charge for each space is $65. The e-mail registration will be accepted on a first-come first-served basis to the time on the received e-mail. The acceptance of each registrant will be confirmed by e-mail or phone within the following week. At that time, payment may be made by credit card.

UNLIMITED EDITION is a juried show about the relationship of the art world to reproduction and marketing. Art In City Hall
The Art League in partnership with the City of Alexandria, in conjunction with the Mayor’s initiative to promote the arts citywide in Alexandria, are coordinating a rotating fine arts exhibit. This exhibit will enhance the environment of Alexandria’s City Hall and promote the talent of local artists. The exhibit will be juried by an outside, independent expert in the arts and will hang for seven months on the second floor of the Alexandria City Hall.

Call for Exhibitions – 2009

The Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center at Northern Virgina Community College, Alexandria Campus, invites proposals for exhibitions in the Margaret W. and Joseph L. Fisher Art Gallery.

Exhibition dates:
6-10 exhibitions, beginning February 2009

Proposal Deadline:
Proposals must be received by 5:00pm on Friday, December 12, 2008.

Eligibility:
Artists and organizations throughout the norther Virginia, Maryland and Washington, DC metroplex area are eligible. Works can be in both two- and three-dimensional formats. Exhibitions may be group or solo.

Solo Jurying for 2010 is Over!

The quality of work presented before the jurors was quite high. They had very hard decisions to make. Of 52 artists, only 9 could be chosen.

Come in to pick up your works for solo jurying, along with your application packet. The decision will be attached to your work. We won’t tell you over the phone!

Gallery hours are 10am-6pm, Monday through Friday, and Thursdays until 9pm.
