Art in City Hall – New Exhibit

March 22-September 17, 2010
Opening Reception: Tuesday, May 25, 5:30-7:30 pm

Juror’s Statement by William Schran, Assistant Dean Fine Arts, NOVA, Alexandria Campus
It was my honor to be asked and my pleasure to serve as the juror of the 2010 Art in City Hall exhibition. I am very pleased to see that the Mayor and City Council recognize the importance of all the arts in Alexandria and, even in these tough economic times continue to support an important aspect of what makes the city a vibrant community.

I would like to thank each and every artist who submitted their work to the show and were willing to allow me to sit in judgment of what they have poured their heart and soul into. Submitting art work to a juried show means taking risk, a risk that may lead to a feeling of validation, or the disappointment of rejection. Artists should never take the outcome of a judging process as something personal. The juror doesn’t know you, can’t know your intention, but can only deal with a brief interaction between human & art.

Mixed media group shows are especially difficult to judge. Many jurors have a tough time comparing the merits of each media, especially if they are unfamiliar with a process. I find it a bit easier, being an educator and having explored and/or taught nearly all 2D and 3D mediums. I make a conscious effort not to compare one media to another, but accept each for what it offers.

What do jurors look for when they decide what will be included in a show, and what will be rejected? I believe much has to do with the initial reaction. Is there something, a color, a shape, a texture that captures the eye immediately and begs for additional viewing time? Is there a compelling image that draws one into the composition? Has the artist truly shown me another way to look at the world around us? These shout out to me and ask that I pause a moment longer, take a closer look, and then the art and I begin a visual dialogue.

-Bill

Found

Call to Artists
Found
April 2010
This exhibit is intended to explore the creativity of found objects. A found object can be described as a natural object or an artifact not originally intended as art that is found and considered to have aesthetic value. Artists are encouraged to explore the uses of materials that are not considered “art supplies”, but visually interesting materials. The found object must be the focus of the piece. The artist should strive to find the beauty and/or potential of the found object. 90% must be composed of found object(s) and only 10% new material. The frame will not be considered as part of the artwork. Works can be two dimensional or three dimensional, so the found object can be presented in a traditional frame or in a non-traditional manner.

Found objects in any form can become something entirely different. The San Francisco Dump has an Artist in Residence Program, which allows each artist to use materials from the dump as long as they produce a show. These artists have wonderful examples of incorporating found objects into art. They show us ways to transform the found object into more then just a highlighted figure. You can see examples at http://www.sunsetscavenger.com/AIR/index.php?t=d.

Help Alexandria City Public Schools

Help the Alexandria City Public Schools:

Alexandria City Public Schools are working hard to re-open as soon as possible (Tuesday they hope) and need volunteer help today and tomorrow.
Even though City employees have performed in nothing short of a heroic manner these past nine days, with the snow emergency we are having, many students will find it almost impossibly difficult to go to school without volunteer help.

More than half of those who attend school use bus transportation and many of the school bus stops need to be “dug out” to be useable. Everyone else walks and some sidewalks, especially those near schools, need to be “dug out” as well.

I know that many of you cannot even consider helping because of the demands of your business, but I hope that some of you might be able to lend and hour or two to help today (between 10 a.m. and Noon) and tomorrow morning to help walk students to school. If you are able to help, please contact a school principal, the schools below especially need help:

Patrick Henry Elementary School (4643 Taney Avenue, Alexandria, VA 22304; Tel: 703-461-4170 | Fax: 703-823-3350 Principal: Coleen Mann, Ed.D)

William Ramsay Elementary School (5700 Sanger Avenue, Alexandria, VA 22311; Tel: 703-824-6950 | Fax: 703-379-7824 Principal: Kathy Taylor).

Let me know if you have questions or need assistance…and send this to as may people as you can!!

Todd Webb’s Amazing Patrons’ Show Images

One of our fantastic Patrons’ Todd Webb, has created this great website to view images.

He also has created lists to print out the images next to your top choices for your own personal list!
How It Works

One table is ordered by Art #, the other by Rank #. When an artwork is called out, find it on the left table and cross it out. Cross-reference that Rank # in the table on the right, and cross it out. When your name is called, the highest ranking, remaining artwork on the right is your top choice.

In the example below, Art #18 is called by someone else. Find Art #18 in the left table. It is Ranked #1. Cross them out. Now find that Rank #1 in the table on the right. Again, it corresponds to your Art #18. Cross them out. Then your name is called. Your highest remaining Rank # on the right table is Rank #2, Art #137. You get Art #137.

Please check it out at www.brickfair.com/art
