Travel workshops with The Art League: FAQs

The Art League’s amazing travel workshops — including local day trips and international workshops in such locations as the Bahamas and Spain —  are great ways to learn more about art and culture while globetrotting with expert instructors. Curious about joining us on the next expedition? We asked Travel Workshop Coordinator Margaret Cerutti for some background on what to expect.

Instructor Robert Liberace demos for students in Florence.

What’s included in the workshop price?
That varies by the workshop. Generally, accommodations with breakfast, group transportation and entrance fees to the sites on the agenda, and the price of instruction are included. Airfares aren’t usually included, but we try to arrange them at the lowest price available. This is optional; you can use your frequent flier miles instead if you prefer — many people do!

What’s the itinerary like? Will there be down time?
Every travel workshop is unique — it’s based on the instructor’s choice. If it’s a plein air painting workshop, there will be an initial demo (on a theme, such as atmospheric perspective in the landscape) with additional demos on subsequent days in different locations. Students will then work on their own pieces with instructor input. For a museum exploration or drawing workshop, usually a drawing/painting demo will follow the museum experience, either within the museum itself or at another location. Generally the schedule is pretty intense — depending on the workshop, the day is filled with activities. However, for the most part the evenings are free.

Oxford University in England.

How is transportation within the destination arranged?
On domestic local day trips (Virginia, Maryland, etc.), you’ll provide your own transportation. In general, group transportation for international workshops is arranged at the travel workshop location.

I’m not a very advanced artist — will I feel out of place? What if I don’t know anyone else who’s going and I’m not an Art League student or exhibiting artist?
Generally, travel workshops are not for beginners. Depending on the workshop, you should have some drawing/painting/photography experience. Call for further information if you aren’t sure. Some of our instructors have two- or three-day workshops you can take to gain experience prior to departure.

There are pre-departure information nights for all participants who are registered, so you’ll get to meet each other and further discuss supplies and the itinerary for the trip.

Workshops include visits to local attractions such as the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice.

Can my spouse or significant other come if they aren’t an artist?
Sometimes that can be arranged. Call for details.

How do you plan your trips and choose your destinations? Are the instructors experts on those cities?
Generally, our instructors choose the travel locations because they are familiar with them or that city has something in particular to offer the students — in particular, things like museums or painting the lavender fields in Provence in July.

How do I get my supplies? Can I take them on the plane?
Supplies may be purchased here in The Art League Store. Supplies can be carried in your checked luggage. Details can be explained before departure.

Instructor Susan Abbott captures Elbow Cay in the Bahamas.

Is there anything I need to do to prepare?
That depends on the location. Always keep your passport current!

I missed out on a trip I would have liked to go on. Are the same trips offered each year? How can I find out what’s coming up?
Some trips are offered on a yearly basis due to demand and their small size, though specific itinerary items may change. Current information is on The Art League website.

Call for Artists: The Christmas Attic

Old Town’s landmark, The Christmas Attic, is seeking qualified artists to help produce a temporary exhibition featuring illuminated canvases of art to be revealed in each of the stores windows for The Christmas Attic’s Holiday Advent Calendar Event – part of the store’s 40th Anniversary Celebration.

Starting December 1 through December 25, 2011 each day at sundown, the store will reveal “advent art” featuring a variety of local artists holiday creations.  All art will be placed either in the windows or on the brick of the building on the front side facing Union Street.  There will be a VIP/media kick-off event on December 1st.  At the closing of the Advent Calendar event, the canvases of advent art will be available for auction at a post-event celebration (to be scheduled).  Proceeds from the auction will go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid-Atlantic.  The Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid-Atlantic grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.

The Christmas Attic (currently celebrating its 40th Anniversary) was opened by a local family that loved the spirit and joy of the holidays. Since 1971, the charming store has long been considered a “must see” by locals and tourists alike.  Specializing in hard-to-find, unique items, the store’s offerings include European hand-blown glass, locally-designed souvenirs, Italian nativity scenes, snow-covered village houses, German collectibles as well as angels, Santa’s and snowmen galore.  The store also stocks a wide selection of everyday gifts, books, home décor and accessories plus a fun, funky wine selection.  The store is located in an 18th century tobacco warehouse situated one block from the Potomac River in Old Town, Alexandria, Virginia.

Project Scope:
The Christmas Attic is looking for 25 artists (1 artist per advent canvas) to submit an electronic sketch for review/consideration to be selected.  Each day at sundown, one advent art piece will be revealed and illuminated. The store will select the order of when the canvases will be displayed for the 25 days.  The final advent day (Christmas Day) must be an image of a nativity scene. All art designs must be seen from a distance and weather proofed.  Artist participation submissions/concept sketches are due, October 3, 2011, with artist selections announced on October 17, 2011.  Individuals can download the Call for Artist information and application at www.christmasattic.com (click on “Advent Artist” on the left hand side of the page).

A Summer Profile of Our Featured Artist, Shanthi Chandrasekar!

Even before her “Red Dots” appeared on our walls this month, Shanthi Chandrasekar was creating buzz in the DC area art community. Check out this interview featuring Shanthi and her 15-year-old daughter, Aishwariya, in the June 15th issue of Potomac Patch!

Local Mother, Daughter Keep Traditional Indian Folk Art Alive

A mother and daughter team of artists received a master-apprentice grant from the Maryland Arts and Humanities Council to ensure the continuity of Kolams, the traditional Indian art of decorative threshold designs.

Shanthi Chandrasekar learned to draw Kolams, decorative designs of lines and patterns, from her mother and grandmother as a young child in her native India.

Little did she know that her work with Kolamswould win her a local art award. Shanthi and her 15-year-old daughter, Aishwariya, recently received a Master-Apprentice Grant from theMaryland Arts and Humanities Council. The grant allows the Chandrasekars and other Maryland traditional artists to share their craft through public performances at the Maryland Traditions Folklife Festival on June 18.

“Kolams are drawings that are created on the floor of the thresholds of houses in Tamil Nadu, India,” Shanthi said. “They are forms of artistic self expression for women that represent the hardships that they have to go through, and how they have to weave their way around them.”

Art in its many forms was important to Shanthi’s family as she was growing up in India. She said she was deeply influenced by her parents’ appreciation of traditional arts, but also said she was influenced by the drawings and plans her father brought home from his work as a civil engineer.

Shanthi’s skills and passion for drawing were evident in school.

“I had art classes at school until about 8th grade,” she said. “I participated in school art competitions and won a number of awards.”

She is passing her love for traditional Indian arts along to her own children. Her son is a budding musican and has painted and sculpted alongside her. Aishwariya’s work with Kolams is impressive, Shanthi said.

“My daughter, Aishwariya, who is a 10th grader, has been learning to draw the Kolams since she could hold a pencil,” she said. “This award has helped us set aside time to pursue this traditional art form more seriously.”

Shanthi said her daughter’s Kolams started with very simple patterns, but she can now make complex drawings.

“[Aishwariya] has even come up with her own line drawings inspired by Kolams,” Shanthi said. “She helps me with Kolam workshops and creates Kolam-inspired gifts.”

Shanthi teaches local artists how to make the different types of Kolams and the rules that are followed to make them, as well as the philosophy behind them. Shanthi uses any tool she can find to make the designs — the simpler the tool the better, she said. She uses rock powder from India, but since she doesn’t have much of it she sometimes works in colored sand.

On June 18, Shanthi will demonstrate the art of creating Kolams at the Maryland Traditions Folklife Festival at Creative Alliance in Baltimore. The event lasts from 10 a.m. through 7 p.m. Her work can also be seen at the Black Rock Center in Germantown in July.

She has two solo shows coming up: one in Chennai, India in August and another (Three Red Dots) at The Art League in Alexandria, Virginia in September.

Musings from Board Member Patsie Uchello

Many years ago, as a sophomore at Tulane University, I sat in my Intro to Psychology class and learned something that has truly stuck with me, a theory designed by Abraham Maslow in 1943. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is a basic framework to understand humanity and its motivations. It is a theory of psychology that explains and compares the basic needs of man, such as food, shelter, clothing, procreation, and safety, vs. the need to be loved, the need for self-esteem, and the highest need of all: the need for self-actualization. Once our basic survival and comfort is accomplished, it is still not enough. We need to be fulfilled on an intellectual, creative, and spiritual level.

I had an epiphany the other day – which is that The Art League exists to provide a path to self-actualization for its members and students. It is the vehicle by which we artists may hone our talents, and become our very best selves, by expanding our artistic horizons. It is a guide in our endless search to be more.

Every non-profit organization has a mission, and ours is self-actualization for our community of artists. We could print Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs on our brochures, with the top of the pyramid circled, with an arrow pointing to the phrase ”study and grow here.”

It is a privilege for our members, staff, teachers, and volunteers to be a part of the growth of so many individuals from our surrounding communities. Won’t you please join us in this worthy mission? Sign up for a class, become a friend, and/or support our mission financially. The Arts are being cut from school curricula every day, and The Art League is one of the last remaining schools to offer certain classes. We are unique, we provide quality, and you will not find our equal anywhere to help fulfill your dream of self-actualization.

Best,

Patsie Uchello, Art League Board, 2nd Vice President

The Torpedo Factory Art Center presents its Third Annual Day of the Dead celebration from October 24 – November 4, 2011. The altar exhibition returns to the main floor of the art center and will be hosted by the Target Gallery. Local and regional artists are invited to submit altar proposals. Shane Pomojambo is CEO and Creative Director of Art Whino, a DC based art gallery whose mission is to bring together the freshest talent in the underground art scene, with a focus on Pop Surrealism and Low Brow art movements. Pomajambo graduated from Virginia Tech with a Masters Degree in Architecture, followed by teaching there for three years. In 2003 he decided to go on his own and started Moderne Design, a design build firm which has been full swing to present time. He has had a passion for collecting since an early age, starting with 70’s Star Wars’ action figures which evolved into a large comic book collection of about 4,000 vintage comics, and eventually into art. Being born and raised in New York, he was part of the whole Breaking/Graffiti scene which had a strong influence in his appreciation of street art. With 15 years of following some of the scene’s biggest players that were now showing in galleries in New York and California, he began displaying his collection at open houses he would hold for his newly finished homes he would build. Excited to see the enthusiasm that people had for this genre of art, Pomajambo opened Art Whino gallery in Old Town Virginia in 2007. Over 1,500 people came out for their opening night, solidifying that there was a large demand for this art which mainly thrived in New York and California; 62 shows later and after working with over 1200 artists Art Whino is now a leader in the scene worldwide.

6 Steps To A Beautiful Art Display!

Watercolor artist and gallery owner Marilyn Swift. Photo by gallerysystems.com

Beautiful art arrangements in galleries, museums, art stores and even private homes are never accidents (no matter how effortless they might look). There’s a simple yet solid process to follow when displaying art that many creative businesses follow in order to maximize appeal. The good news is that anyone can do it!

We found a great interview with Marilyn Swift, a Massachusetts  painter and gallery owner, on gallerysystem.com. She breaks the process down into these 6 simple steps.

1) Choose the right height. Create an imaginary horizontal line for consistent vertical placement of the works, at a viewer-friendly height. Large items will be hung so that this line divides them in half across their midsection. Smaller items can be “double hung” in two rows, above and below, with the centerline halfway between.
“Many people tend to hang their work too high, especially if it’s in a room where people will be sitting when they look at it,” notes Swift. “Probably a good rule of thumb is to start at around 54 inches off the ground, and adjust from there.” Among the factors to consider: Will people be standing or sitting? Are there low sofas or high stools? How high are the ceilings? Who will be using the space – children? Seniors? Basketball players?

2) Edit. Decide how much will really fit on the wall or walls you’re working with. It’s easy to overcrowd, which can be visually overwhelming, and detracts from each individual piece. The two-row technique can be useful for putting more pieces on a wall, especially if they are smaller in size; it can also work to put a smaller piece over a larger one.

3) Experiment and Observe. To find the right arrangement, lay the works out along the floor at the foot of the wall, and try different combinations. “They shouldn’t fight,” is how Swift puts it. “You need to step back and look, and constantly readjust with a fresh eye that you only get from a distance. A wall can be too chaotic, or it can be too quiet. If the lines are all similar, you might need something to jazz it up.” Another hint: don’t fill an entire wall with works that are the same size with the same frame – “you start to only see the frames,” cautions Swift.

4) Adjust. Try different spacing to give the works room to breathe. Proper spacing depends on many factors, including the size of the work, and how it is framed. “If you have watercolors with a four-inch matte around them – maybe they can hang just six inches apart, because you have that space plus the matte,” explains Swift. “If you’re hanging things in ornate frames, they may need more space.”

5) Wait.  “If you’re not strapped for time, come in the next day with a fresh eye, and often you can see where you need to make adjustments before you commit,” says Swift

6) Hang!  After going through this process, you can plot the exact locations for the pieces in your display and hang with confidence. Swift notes, however, that the desire to tweak is virtually universal, and that the use of a wall-mounted hanging system rather than nails in the wall can be a huge help, and a great way to take stress out of the hanging process.
