During this time of the year, delicious cakes and pies are all around us, tempting us to take another bite! Mary Beth Gaiarin’s impressionistic take on our favorite layer cake in Cake on a Plate is a delightful way to enjoy dessert completely guilt free. Gaiarin’s paintings put the focus on a dessert that often elicits memories of family gatherings, childhood birthday, baking with loved ones, and enjoying a sweet bite.
Here’s what the artist had to say about the piece:
What’s your creative process like, from an idea to a finished piece?
“I think what a lot of people find surprising about my creative process is how much time I spend thinking about my possibilities of subject matter. I have to paint what I absolutely love, whether it’s something to look at, to eat, to wear, or what gives me a sense of peace and happiness. From my teenage son’s soccer shoes with his old practice ball, to landscapes that depict scenes that have particular meaning to me, to even small paintings of my favorite used tubes of paint, I have to have a strong connection with my subject.
While I enjoy the entire process of painting, I get a real kick out of the very first few strokes with my brush– it feels like the adventure is beginning. About the middle of a painting session is when I might get a little doubtful and frustrated, but that is when I remind myself to stay loose and it’s about then that I pick up my palette knife, which always serves to make me paint confidently and impressionistically. The most challenging part of a painting is often the end– when is it finished? Just pure experience has taught me to slow down towards the end so I don’t over paint and fuss too much.”
Mary Beth Gaiarin, Cake on a Plate, Best in Show
What was your goal with this piece?
“When I paint I always strive to be loose and impressionistic. With this particular painting I tackled it quickly and found that the limited color range, warm brown tones and off whites, lent itself well to an impressionistic approach and gave it an immediate cohesiveness so I could just have fun with it.”
Is chocolate cake your favorite dessert?
“A good chocolate cake is definitely my favorite dessert. I also enjoy painting cakes because since I was a child I had such a passion for baking. My sons and I had such great times baking and cooking together as they grew up. Now they are off to college and it’s healthier for me to paint cakes then it is for me to bake and eat them.”
Why did you choose to use this medium for this piece?
“I always paint in oils on linen canvas. I love the smoothness of the linen– it works so well with the palette knife and it keeps the vibrancy of the colors. I love working with oils because they are malleable, slow to dry, and allow me to build up the paint in layers.”
What are you working on now?
“The past couple of days I’ve been working on a series of paintings featuring wrapped gift boxes with large colorful bows. I am drawn to single objects as my subjects but I need a complicated subject to keep my interest. I’m finding that a large complex satin bow, with its darks and lights is giving me an interesting new challenge.”

Wil Scott, Friends, digital photo.
“I was struck by the seeming connection between the dog and the two human figures. My approach to photography is eclectic. I usually have a camera with me and photograph people, buildings, nature, and any subject that attracts my eye. ‘It’s not what you look at; it’s what you see.’”
Héctor J. Torres , Holy Relics, Mixed Media
“The goal was to create an altar-like piece reminiscent of religious traditions of reliquary art, dating back centuries, with a modern touch, in fact a ‘fake.’ Most typically I am a painter, so I am working on a series of abstract expressionist canvases in oil, however am continuing to work you on some boxes, addressing inspiration from recent travels to the Athens, Venice and Istanbul.”
Bob Friedman, Waiting for the 7:53, photograph
“I was taken with the shadows of the lamp posts. The woman on the left and the man in the distance was a bonus. I just wander the streets looking for people doing things.”
“The photograph was taken in the Lutheran cathedral of the same name in Reykjavik, Iceland. The image of the three chairs on the altar captures the Scandinavian simplicity of the cathedral’s design while the sunlight streaming across evokes a spiritual quality…my next two projects are capturing foliage color amid the late fall brown leaves and finalizing black and white images of the Grand Canyon.”
Aletha Kuschan, Flowers and Things, acrylic painting on canvas, 44” x 40”
“The painting is essentially a large drawing-in-color made from a still life set up. What I sought from it was a very direct, linear, drawing-based approach to the still life objects in a motif which I arranged to have strong hints of landscape imagery — with a blue, sky-like background, a green lawn-like table setting and a vase of flowers with a large tree-like bough so that the two genres of still life and landscape might become somewhat blurred together. Next, I am working on a series of similarly scaled still life paintings of flowers, each with a strong leaning in a particular color direction (one being predominantly yellow, another violet, another jade green, etc.)”
Meryl Silver, Fire and Ice, photograph on canvas
“I wanted to capture the beach just as the sun was rising and highlighting parts of the beach. Since the icebergs are in motion the patterns made are constantly changing, making the experience both exciting and challenging. I’m currently working on images I took in October at Bryce and Zion National Parks”
Barbara Stepura, Last Days of Summer, oil on canvas
“As a plein air painter, I find that the experience of translating my view of nature to canvas captivates me and transports me to a place of peace, contentment and oneness with nature that is a marvel to savor. Presently, I am working on a series of plein air paintings of Southern Maryland landscapes.”
Maureen Rabinovitz, Still Life with Rocks, Paper Bag, Scissors, watercolor=
“My goal with this piece, as with most of my paintings, was to use shape, pattern, and especially color to create a harmony on paper. I set up this still life after spending the morning in Deborah Ellis’ Art League watercolor class trying and failing to paint rocks in a landscape. Painting rocks in a shallow bowl came so much easier. I am currently working on trying to paint larger works, usually still lifes but also figures/interiors with still life elements.”
Lynn Mehta, At Our Crossroads, oil
“I was painting on location, trying to capture this moment in time while trucks were passing through the intersection and shadows were quickly moving. I’m now beginning on a series of studio pieces that capture a transitional point in time.”
Sarah Strickler, Bent, photography
“To convey the stark beauty and environment of the Province Lands near the tip of Cape Cod. This area is part of the Cape Cod National Seashore. [Next I’ll be working on] highlighting both the built and natural landscape, how they are often inexorably interconnected.”
Stephanie Chang, Unbowed, Charcoal on paper
“In this drawing, I wanted to capture Olivia’s beauty and strength. Although Olivia’s outward appearance is elegant and refined, her inner world is free and unconquered. I chose to use charcoal for this drawing. Charcoal allowed me to present Olivia’s face as surfacing through the paper, unbowed. Currently, I am finishing a few commission paintings and drawings. I am also planning to paint a portrait of my great great grandfather, who was a general from the Ching Dynasty.”
Barbara Kreling, Intersection, Acrylic with crayon on canvas
“With art training and traditional practice of more than 20 years, I’ve stepped out in the air and now work intuitively to create visual experience using layers of acrylic paint and other media such as crayon and ink. This painting was focused on the intersection of colors through composition. [Currently,] I’m working on several pieces at once beginning with specific colors and working with layers of paint and composition to create a meaningful visual experience.”
Susan L. Sanders, Seraphim, black and white photo printed on metal.
“My goal [with this piece is] to show the beauty of this stoneware sculpture by the Japanese artist, Fujikasa Satoko, which is in the Walters Gallery of Art in Baltimore. I am currently working on a series at MOMA of iconic art works and visitors to the museum.”
M. Alexander Gray, Hardware River Aqueduct III, engraving
“My goal was this piece was to create a more advanced version of an earlier piece, “Hardware River Aqueduct.” The earlier piece was also an engraving and was only the second engraving I completed, and as such did not have a high level of sophistication; leading me to revisit the same subject with the aim of capturing more of the detail and atmosphere of this compelling structure. I am working on several other pieces right now: other local landscapes and scenes that have the same evocative quality that the Hardware Aqueduct holds for me.”

Edgerley has lectured at The Textile Museum in DC and Edgerley’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in China, Spain, Korea, Japan, Germany, Mexico and France. As a juried-in-artist at the Torpedo Factory Art Center, Alexandria, VA, she shows her work in Fiberworks Studio #14 as well as The Art League gallery. We checked in with her to find out more about here upcoming Winter workshops, and we are literally dyeing to try one!
What got you into dyeing textiles, and how long have you been working in the industry?
I started selling quilted garments using commercial fabrics about twenty-five years ago. It wasn’t long after that I discovered the traditional Japanese technique of Shibori and the possibility of creating my own fabric. Shibori is the Japanese word for the process of resist dyeing fabric by stitching, binding, clamping or wrapping. Several trips to Japan and workshops with Shibori masters have led me into teaching the technique, previously at the Corcoran College of Art & Design and now at The Art League School. I also teach other dye techniques including screen printing and block printing on fabric.
What can beginners to the world of dyeing expect on the first day of your workshop?
In both my Shibori Dyeing: Tie-Dye on Steroids and Design and Print Your Own Fabric workshops, the basics of using Procion MX dyes are introduced. I encourage students to begin work on small sample pieces and explore the possibilities of each technique. Shibori students will clamp and fold, hand stitch, and pole wrap fabric to create patterns and texture before immersing the fabric into the dye. Those in the printing workshop use thickened dye to screen print and mono print pattern and design on cotton and silk. In addition to the sample pieces, students will have scarves to dye in the workshop.

What do you do with textiles after you dye them?
As a juried artist at the Torpedo Factory and member at Fiberworks Studio #14, I sell my scarves, garments, and pillows which have been hand dyed using mostly Shibori techniques.

I am also a member of a local artist group of thirteen, New Image Artists, who show our work in exhibitions locally and nationally. I show framed Shibori pieces and quilted wall art in these exhibitions.
From an exhibition last year at the Athenaeum in Alexandria.
Working collaboratively with my daughter, Tamryn Edgerley McDermott, we transferred our drawings onto fabric using Thermofax screens and thickened dye. Our banner was juried into Art al Vent XI festival in Gata de Gorgos, Spain.

Have you seen students use their fabric creatively after they leave your class?
Yes, I have stayed in touch with many former students who have also fallen in love with these techniques and are doing some beautiful work.

With 250+ classes and workshops this Winter in painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, photography, jewelry-making, the fiber arts, printmaking, and more, we have the perfect class for you!
We’re happy to announce many NEW additions to our faculty and curriculum this year.
Here’s a taste of what’s new:
Color Spot Painting: This class, taught by visiting artist Ephraim Rubenstein (currently on staff with faculty of the Art Students League of New York and Columbia University, where he teaches the Literature of Art Seminar and Life Drawing in the Department of Narrative Medicine), will study color spot direct painting, this method accentuates space and atmosphere and allows for discovery of the unexpected.
In Hatchmark: Red Chalk Portraiturewith Dan Thompson, students discover differences in various media called “red chalk” and their potential applications and explore ways of assembling forms in drawings to describe nuances of the human face.
Iridescence and Design in Gelli Plate Printing with Priscilla Treacy explores the Gelli Plate, an amazing tool for creating monotypes. With planning, stencils, stamps, and iridescent and interference paints, surprisingly complex artwork results.
The Portrait in Clay: Structure and Expressionwith Rick Weaver dives into portraiture through sculpture. Through demonstrations and individual critiques, students will learn the rudiments of creating a life size, ready-to-fire clay bust from life.
Watercolor by new instructor Jinchen Han
The Art League is excited for the New Year, and we hope you are too.
No two artistic journeys are the same! That’s why you can always get in touch with us for advice on which class is right for you:
Pete McCutchen’s photographs have a peace about them, as if they were taken in an untouched world by a photographer who wasn’t meant to be there. Rolling sand dunes etched by the wind, craggy rocks crystallized by ice, hills sliced by an unseen force—each lead the eye to the strange patterns and textures of nature. The photographs, captured at Jockey’s Ridge State Park in North Carolina, The Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado, and the Alaskan wilderness capture the drama of nature in abstracted monochrome.
Tears by Pete McCutchen
Pete has been a regular in the gallery for many years, and The Art League checked in with him about his current exhibit, what inspires his work, and what he’s looking forward to next!
Why the choice to move to black and white, from your previous color photography?
“The short answer is that I think that this particular group of images looks better in black and white. In this case, what caught my eye was pattern and texture – hence the title of the show. The longer answer has to do with my own artistic journey, which is intertwined with the birth of digital photography technology. You could say that I’m returning to my roots – I began as a kid, working in the black and white darkroom.”
“My Yellowstone Thermal Zone series combined my bold abstract vision with traditional photographic virtue, and thePattern + Texture series is an extension of that project.”
Jagged by Pete McCutchen
How did you make the decision to display your photographs on metallic paper? Can you tell us more about the process you use to display in this way?
“Today, however, with digital capture, there is a lot more fluidity. I shoot everything with a digital camera, in color, and then I can convert the color image to black and white. It means you can just shoot, and decide later what works best for a particular image or particular series. Most images want to be in black and white, or they want to be in color.”
Continuance by Pete McCutchen
What photographers inspire your work?
“I think it’s important to take inspiration in all places. Not just photographers, but visual artists in general, from music, from nature. You short change yourself as a photographer if all you do is look to other photographers. It’s OK to emulate other people, but you should never imitate. I could try to become a junior varsity Ansel Adams, but I would never be more than a junior varsity version of a master. I try to express my own distinctive vision, even as I draw on and am inspired by other photographers.”
“I wasinterviewed back in 2016, and I named a number of photographers, including quite a few associated with The Art League Gallery, The Torpedo Factory, and Multiple Exposures Gallery: Jim Steele, Fred Zafran, Soomin Ham, Min Enghauser, and Amanda Harner.
Capillary by Pete McCutchen
What are you working on next?
“Right now, I kind of feel like my Pattern + Texture idea is still running strong. Having shot for two years in Alaska, Death Valley, the Petrified Forest, The Great Sand Dunes National Park, etc., I produced a pretty big body of work. I’m doing a show at the Touchstone Gallery in March, and my current plan is to do Pattern + Texture II – and it will be all new images. I’m also exploring the Pattern + Texture idea on a smaller scale – the patterns and textures found in plants and leaves. I think that will birth another series. One of the early images exploring that idea, Capillary, is in this month’s All-Media show. I suspect that will turn into its own collection.”

The Art League is taking a walk down memory lane and exploring some of our favorite posts from the last few years! This blog post was originally published June 15, 2017.
But, as the Cubists taught us, there’s always room for more than one perspective. Here are 20 of our other favorite art blogs, split into five categories:
These art blogs will get you up to speed on what’s happening now with reviews of exhibits, news about art-world controversies, and interviews. For similar blogs with a more local perspective, see the next category.
The go-to site for news, reviews, essays, and more about the global art world. Hyperallergic is based in Brooklyn, but the thoughtful news, reviews, and other articles come from contributors nationally and internationally. With many posts daily, it’s hard to encapsulate the breadth of coverage here, but there’s always something to read.
Where Hyperallergic is keenly focused on the ideas, politics, and power dynamics of art, artnet is the place to go for news about the art market: auctions, fairs, and the like. This blog aims to be a resource for anyone who wants to keep on top of the international art market.
Aperture publishes a print magazine, but their blog also features web-only content — all about photography, just like the magazine. You’ll find plenty of reviews, essays, and interviews about mostly contemporary photographers. (For more tutorial- and gear-focused photography blogs, see below.)
Blogs about the arts in DC
Washington, DC is full of culture, and it’s not all at museums (though three museum blogs are featured here). Don’t miss what’s happening in your backyard!
East City Art is your best bet for reviews, features, and news about events and exhibits around DC. This blog is premised on the idea that there’s more to DC art than what you can find on the Mall and in NW.
It can be tough to keep up with all the gallery openings, but they manage to do it! East City Art also puts on the Emulsion show and annually publishes a print magazine quarterly.
Like all good museum blogs, the blog for National Museum of Women in the Arts features a mix of content: not just what’s in their collection, but what’s going on with women artists all over the world. (You may know this blog, and the museum, as the genesis of the #5WomenArtists project.) Check out their Art Fix Friday posts for links to the week’s most interesting articles and exhibits to see.
Eye Level is the official blog for the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Renwick Gallery, which means it has tons of great material to work with. We love museums’ behind-the-scenes posts, and you’ll find them here. As a DC institution, this blog includes local posts as well as posts about American art in general.
The Phillips Collection’s blog has lots of contributors who post about exhibits, conservation, installation, events, music, and everything else going on at Phillips. It’s also illustrated by Elizabeth Graeber. Because different posts are written by different people, you’ll get lots of perspectives: how visitors react to artwork, what staff members saw on their vacation, and so forth.
Local artist and writer Lenny Campello has posted here since 2003, making it one of the oldest art blogs on this list. He posts news about the local arts scene, including criticism, events, exhibit opportunities for artists, links to news stories, scam alerts, and photos of his works in progress.
Creativity and inspiration art blogs
These art blogs spotlight individual artists’ work, not necessarily in exhibits but presented as ain’t-it-cool inspiration, ripe for sharing.
Danielle Krysa, a.k.a. the Jealous Curator, shares images of amazing contemporary artists. If you’re featured on The Jealous Curator, you’ll know you’ve made it! This blog is heavy on images, light on text, which is just fine with us.
Krysa also hosts a podcast, Art for Your Ear, which we featured in our podcasts post.
This quarterly contemporary art magazine also publishes articles in a blog. Like the other blogs in this category, it’s one to bookmark just to see what kinds of projects other artists are working on.
This Vice project doesn’t focus only on visual art, but there’s plenty of that to be found. They also publish some news articles (after all, it is a news organization).
Blogs about running your art business
For working artists, navigating galleries and websites and art fairs presents a variety of pitfalls. These art blogs are here to guide you. (For similar articles, see this blog’s Artful Resources section, with articles about things like creating a website or pricing your artwork.)
Alyson Stanfield’s long-running blog is full of great advice, both for motivating yourself in the studio, and marketing your artwork. The author is a curator, educator, and collector who has been coaching artists with career advice since 2002. She also publishes a podcast.
This blog is from the National Arts Marketing Project at Americans for the Arts. You’ll find it most useful if you work for an arts organization, but it’s also useful for artists working on their own website, email, and similar marketing projects. See the post linked above for tips on your artist brand, for example.
With the motto “dispelling the starving artist myth,” Cory Huff’s website has lots of articles, videos, and other resources on Internet marketing for artists — both how-to’s and best practices. What to do with your email list? What to blog about? How to start your Facebook fan page? The answers are here. Look for plenty of helpful guest blog posts with real-world examples, too.
Art lessons & tutorials
These art blogs are for artists who are still learning — in other words, all of us. Motivational, reflective, and instructional, they feature articles with specific tutorials or exercises.
This blog could go in either this category or the one above: EmptyEasel provides tutorials on both making your art and selling it. This one is worth a deep dive into the archive.
That’s how Canadian painter Robert Genn begins each of his twice-weekly “letters” to artists. In the comments, you’ll find lively discussions among his substantial following, making this as much a community as a blog. There’s lots more to see here, too, including calendars, links, and a huge collection of art quotes.
This is actually one of five blogs published by Artist Daily, with others focused on specific topics including painting and drawing. These tutorials focus on traditional, representational drawing and painting techniques (which are helpful to learn even if realism isn’t your end goal).
Tutorials for beginning to experienced photographers are the forte of Light Stalking. As the post linked above notes, there’s always something new to learn.
Instead of tutorials, this is where you’ll find reviews and discussions of all the latest gear. (There are a few lessons sprinkled in, too.) If you’re a photographer who’s focused on equipment, you probably already read this site religiously.
Are there any other art blogs you love reading? Let us know in the comments!
Art on Tap is TOMORROW, and we can’t wait to taste samples from seven local restaurants, and sip beers from six of our favorite local breweries! But Art on Tap isn’t just about the delicious beer+bite combinations…it’s also about the art! This year each restaurant-brewery team has chosen one of the following artworks as a muse to their offerings. Below, “meet” the muses behind the food and beer pairings and learn a little bit about beer art history:
Giusseppe Archimboldo, The Waiter, 1574
Arcimboldo’s composite portraits are visual delights; grotesque, yet charming; absurd, yet ingenious. Known for his bizarre blend of still life and portraiture, Arcimboldo’s optical witticisms entertained the Hapsburg court with their imaginative interpretations of the sitter. Throughout his oeuvre, ordinary human features—noses, ears, lips—are exchanged for their vegetable counterparts, from cucumbers to corn cobs. With a barrel for an abdomen, The Waiter gives new meaning to the phrase “beer belly.”
Jasper Johns, Painted Bronze Ale Cans, 1964
Printmaker, painter, and sculptor Jasper Johns (born 1930) allegedly created Painted Bronze/Ale Cans (1960) as an artistic jab towards fellow artist Willem de Kooning, who remarked that John’s dealer, Leo Castelli, could sell “two beer cans” if given the opportunity—and indeed, he did. However, works like Painted Bronze/Ale Cans helped bridge the gap between Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art.
Fernand Leger, Still Life with a Beer Mug, 1921
With a fractured picture plane, harlequin patterns, and multiple perspectives, Fernand Léger (1881-1955) combines elements of Cubism and Futurism in Still Life with a Beer Mug (1921-1922). Here, Léger uses bold primary colors to create a kaleidoscopic vision of afternoon nosh, complete with a German style beer mug, a plate of fruit, and pots of butter.
Eduard Grützner, Beer Tasting, 1905
German painter and printmaker Eduard Grützner (1846-1925) often painted monks and other cheery figures enjoying a drink. In Falstaff (1893) Grützner depicts one of his favorite subjects, Sir John Falstaff, a fictional character born from the mind of William Shakespeare. Falstaff is a comedic figure—jolly, vain, and bostful, imagined by Grützner as a portly, drunken fellow.
Vincent Van Gogh, Die Trinkers (The Drinkers), 1890
Vincent Willem van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch painter, draftsmen and printmaker. While living in the Asylum of Saint-Paul in Saint-Rémy, Van Gogh did a painting of a print called The Psychology of a Drinker, The Four Ages by Honore Daumier. Van Gogh successfully captures Daumier’s characteristic humor and and cautionary message about the dangers of overindulgence through his exaggerated figures and palette in Die Trinker (The Drinkers), 1890.
Marianne von Werefkin, Beer Garden, 1907
Marianne von Werefkin (1860-1938), an Expressionist artist born to an affluent Russian family, is known for her flat figures and rich, saturated color palette. In The Beer Garden (1807), we see a faceless crowd of men, women, and children enjoying an afternoon at leisure. As an Expressionist, Werefkin used vivid, unnatural colors, bathing her artwork in jewel-like hues.
Edouard Manet, Two Women Drinking Bock, 1878
Born into an wealthy Parisian family, Edouard Manet’s (1832-1883) aristocratic status allowed him to indulge in the part of the flaneur—a man-about-town who strolled the revitalized boulevards, observing and documenting contemporary life. In Fin de siècle Paris, cafes and brasseries were both economic hubs and artistic havens where artists enjoyed ample opportunity to observe fellow Parisians at leisure.
