Factory March150 Special Exhibition and Art Sale (VA)

Deadline:  Friday, Mar 1—Tuesday, March 5. March150, Target Gallery’s annual special exhibition and art sale, returns with all proceeds going to support new exhibitions and programs at Target Gallery. Open to all! (provided the artwork submitted meets the guidelines). A $15 fee guarantees entry into the exhibition. Target Gallery “Habitat”

Deadline: April 28. Exhibition Juror: Ellyn Weiss, DC-based artist and curator. Target Gallery invites artists working in all visual media to submit to Habitats. In this group exhibition, Habitats will explore the relationship between humans and nature creating a dialogue on the impact that we make on the earth and our environments. The District of Columbia Department of General Services’ Percent for Art Program: DC Public School Installations

Extended Deadline: March 4. The District of Columbia Department of General Services’ Percent for Art Program invites artists to apply to 26 works of art to be permanently installed at Coolidge High School, Hyde-Addison Elementary School, Kimball Elementary School and Maury Elementary Schools, in Washington, D.C.  Artworks include graphic design and two-and three dimensional.  Three months of fabrication during spring/summer with installation occurring right before the students return to school – this year July 15-August 15th for installs.  Please email [email protected] with any other questions. Bethesda Painting Awards

Deadline: March 1. The Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District invites eligible artists to enter the Bethesda Painting Awards. Artists must be 18 years of age or older and permanent, full-time residents of Maryland, Virginia or Washington, D.C. The selected artwork will be on exhibit in June 2019 at Gallery B in downtown Bethesda, MD. All original 2-D painting including oil, acrylic, watercolor, gouache, encaustic and mixed media will be accepted. The maximum dimensions should not exceed 60 inches in width. No reproductions. Artwork must have been completed within the last two years and must be available for the duration of the exhibition. Artwork does not have to be for sale at the exhibition. Selected artists must deliver and pick up artwork to and from Gallery B. All works on paper must be framed to full conservation standards.The Jurors will select up to 10 finalists who will be invited to display their work in a group exhibition at Gallery B in downtown Bethesda in June 2019. Artist Residency: Visual Arts Department at Montgomery College (MD)

Deadline: March 15. The Visual Arts Department at Montgomery College, Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus, is pleased to announce the following opportunities for emerging and established artists. Their exhibitions spaces and Artist in Residence studio are all located in the beautiful Cafritz Foundation Arts Center, located just outside of DC at 930 King Street, Silver Spring MD. Both applications are submitted via JotForm links available on the department website. Artist in Residence Program: A semester-long program including personal studio space, opportunity to interact and collaborate with students, and honorarium. Montgomery College: Apply for Open Gallery Themed Exhibition Series, Self (MD)

Deadline: March 15. Four exhibitions will be scheduled for the 2019-2020 academic year. For the upcoming season, we are seeking artists who explore contemporary ideas of Self Portraiture; engaging with the self through representational or conceptual means. Arlington Arts Center – Call for Submissions (VA)

Deadline: March 25. Arlington Arts Center is pleased to announce a call for submissions for a new regional biennial, which will take place for the first time in the fall of 2019. Featuring work by artists from across the Mid-Atlantic, the exhibition will explore current material and conceptual trends with a focus on work that addresses the concerns of the present moment, whether political, cultural, personal, economic, artistic, or all of the above. The exhibition and accompanying programming will include artists at various stages of their careers, with an eye towards exhibiting work by young and emerging artists alongside groundbreaking new work by artists with longstanding connections to the region and its art scenes.The exhibition will be curated by Blair Murphy, AAC Curator of Exhibitions. Artists who produce contemporary art in any media, and who live or work in the Mid-Atlantic region (defined as Virginia; Washington, DC; Maryland; West Virginia; Pennsylvania; or Delaware) may submit. Any existing works must have been completed within the last 3 years in order to be considered. Artists at any stage of their career are welcome to apply. King Street Gallery Call for Entry (MD)

Deadline: November 25. The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation Arts Center has a number of spaces available for mounting exhibitions that support the academic mission of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts. This open call is for our King Street Gallery, the largest exhibition space in the Cafritz Arts Center. This light filled, 1050 square foot gallery is in the main atrium of the building. Its prominent location, open design, and extremely high ceilings (30 feet+) make it a great venue for major exhibitions. While much of this gallery space is visible from the main lobby of the building, and through the windows that front onto the street, it does maintain gallery hours and is locked after hours. The gallery hours are Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.– 4 p.m. Exhibitions are generally scheduled a year in advance to complement the academic calendar. Exhibitions in the King Street Gallery are 4-5 weeks long, and emphasize two person or small group shows. Single artist applications may be paired with a complimentary artist or artists to better utilize the space. Curated proposals are encouraged. ‘Five and Dime’: District Arts (MD)

Deadline: February 28. All 2D and 3D artists are invited to submit an application for participation. Each artist may submit up to three pieces for consideration. All 2D work should be ready to hang. All work should be labeled with the artist’s name, title, process, date, and sale price. Selected work may be dropped off at the gallery or shipped to arrive between 3/28/19 and 3/30/19. Call for Exhibition Proposals (PA)

Deadline: February 28. The Olin Art Gallery on the campus of Washington & Jefferson College, Washington, PA, is now accepting exhibition proposals in any medium for the 2019-20 academic year. Proposals may include solo or group exhibitions. Submissions must include: 10-20 digital images (jpg-format), contact information, artist statements for all participating artists, an image list (including title, media, size, and date completed for each work), and a resume or CV. Proposals will be accepted via email only (email should be no larger than 10m – ZIP file, Mac compatible, preferred). There is NO entry fee. The application must be received by February 28, 2019. 7th Annual Art Speaks Juried Exhibition Calling All Virginia Artists (VA)

Deadline: March 1. Presented by the Bay School Community Arts Center. Opening Reception: Saturday, April 27, 2019, 4:00-6:00 p.m. Must be a resident of Virginia and over 18 years old. Art Speaks Juried Exhibition: Call for Artists (VA)

Deadline: March 1. Art Speaks presents the Seventh Annual Juried Exhibition, to be eligible for prizes totaling $5,000 (including $1,500 for Best in Show) artists must be a resident of Virginia, and 18+ years. Artists may submit up to three entries. Entry fees: $25 before February 1,  $35 after February 1, $20 for students. Spark Box Studio Dawson Residency Award and Bursary (Canada)

Deadline: March 1. This award is open to residents of North America. Spark Box Studio is accepting applications from emerging, mid-career, and established artists. One artist will receive a month-long residency at our studio in Prince Edward County, plus the $1,000 Dawson bursary. The selected applicant will be granted a semi-private studio space and be given access to the Spark Box Studio equipment and resources. As well, the winner will be provided with living accommodations for their month-long stay. We support a range of disciplines including; drawers, illustrators, painters, writers, printmakers, film makers, performance artists, multidisciplinary artists, curators, book makers, musicians and photographers (digital).

Westmoreland Art Nationals Juried Fine Art & Photography Exhibitions – PA

Deadline: March 1. Artists are invited to submit entries for two juried fine art and photography competitions. The first exhibit will be held May 18 – June 5, 2019 at the Westmoreland County Community College (Youngwood, PA). The second exhibit will be held July 4-8, 2019 at the Westmoreland Arts & Heritage Festival (Latrobe, PA). $4,400 in awards. Call For Entry – Spectrum: DITTO (CT)

Deadline: March 2. The spring exhibit will showcase multiples – a pair, diptych, triptych or group of pieces that relate to each other. Selected works will highlight the juxtaposition, contrast, comparison, expansion, connection and separation between the pieces. Jurors will be looking for submissions of two or more pieces that make statements that are both subtle and obvious, complementary and conflicting. Spectrum is a juried exhibition of original, contemporary artwork in all media. Entries must have been created within the past two years and not previously exhibited at the Carriage Barn. Acceptable media includes painting, prints, drawing, photography and mixed media. The 40th Annual Virginia Watercolor Society Juried Exhibition 2019 (VA)

Deadline: March 2. Paintings in watercolor and other watermedia including water soluble ink on paper or Yupo. No canvas, digital, computer generated or Gicleé art. If other media are used, water based media must dominate the piece. Collage elements will be accepted if the adhered paper pieces are painted in watermedia by the artist. No computer generated, digital or printed clippings will be allowed. All paintings must have been completed on or after January 1, 2015 and not have been painted under supervision. Paintings may not infringe upon another’s copyright. If photo references are used, they must be the artist’s own photographs. Paintings accepted for previous VWS jurored exhibitions are ineligible. Gallery Underground’s next National Juried Show: RISK (VA)

Deadline: March 22. Gallery Underground invites artists working in all media to submit works depicting or representing risk. These can take the form of either literal depictions of taking risks, or more figurative demonstrations of the artist’s personal  risk-taking in their subject matter, medium or technique. For this exhibition, artists will submit a paragraph explaining how their submitted works represent the theme; these paragraphs will be displayed next to each accepted piece. de/composition: a National Juried Exhibition (NY)

Deadline: March 25. Main Street Arts in Clifton Springs, NY seeks entries for a juried art exhibition, May 25 – June 28, 2019. $1,000 in cash awards. Best in Show receives $500. Juror: Margot Muto, head of exhibitions at Memorial Art Gallery, Rochester, NY. This is a national exhibition with a focus on things decomposing, being in a state of decay, deconstructed, or paired down. Both the conceptual side as well as technical/ compositional side of the theme will be encouraged. Open to artists working in all media who are U.S. residents at least 18 years of age. $30 for up to 3 submissions, $35 for 4 to 6 submissions. Baltimore Watercolor Society’s Mid-Atlantic Exhibition at the BlackRock Center for the Arts

Deadline: March 30. Call for entries:  The Baltimore Watercolor Society’s Mid-Atlantic Exhibition at the BlackRock Center for the Arts, Germantown, MD, June 8 – July 13, 2019.  Open to all watermedia artists in the Mid-Atlantic states and DC. Art Enables “Limitation:Liberation” Open Call (DC)

Deadline: March 31. Art Enables presents “Limitation:LIberation” Open Call for artists. Open to artists living in D.C., Maryland, or Virginia. Work should be made within the last 5 years by an artist who lives or works in D.C., Maryland, or Virginia and work should consist of a limited cool palette or limited warm palette. Cool colors are defined as Red-Violet, Violet, Blue-Violet, Blue, Blue-Green, and Green. Warm colors are defined as Red, Red-Orange, Orange, Yellow-Orange, Yellow, and Yellow-Green. Propose an exhibition at UMW Galleries (VA)

Deadline: April 1. The UMW Galleries accept proposals from professional artists and curators for solo and group exhibitions for each of our gallery spaces (Ridderhof Martin Gallery and duPont Gallery). Proposals should be submitted via the UMW Galleries submittable form.  Deadlines: Proposals are accepted year round, but are collected for review on November 1 and April 1. Any applications received after the deadline will automatically be considered for the following deadline. Notification will be given via email within a year of submission. Include the following attachments in your submission: A description of the proposed exhibition. An artist’s statement or curatorial statement. Artist/ curator current resume or CV. Three to five images that are indicative of the work to be exhibited.

Del Ray Art on the Avenue (VA)

Deadline: April 1, rolling. Art on the Avenue is a multicultural arts and music festival organized by the Del Ray Community Partnership, and hosted by the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria. The show welcomes applications from all craft artists, and is known for high quality artwork in a friendly, neighborhood atmosphere. Art on the Avenue is a juried show and all work must be original, handmade, created and exhibited by the approved artist. The LUX Center for the Arts: 2019-2020 Residencies (NE)

Deadline: April 4. The LUX Center for the Arts in Lincoln, Nebraska is currently accepting applications for 2019-2020 year long residencies in all media. A strong desire to teach is required. Artists with more than one area of expertise and an MFA are preferred. This residency can be extended an additional year if both the LUX and the artist agree. All residents receive free studio space (shared or private depending on medium and space available) and 24-hour access and use of equipment in the studio area to which they applied. Ceramics residents have access to regularly stocked clay and glaze materials and use of kilns in exchange for studio maintenance duties. All residents can buy materials from the LUX at cost.Residents have priority for paid, on-site teaching opportunities including community art classes for youth and adults. Residents with an MFA or BFA in painting, ceramics, or metalsmithing have the opportunity to teach college art classes for Doane College-Lincoln campus, held at the LUX. Contemporary South 2019 Call-For-Art (NC)

Deadline: April 6. VAE’s Contemporary South (CoSo) exhibit showcases what the South is currently thinking, discussing, and making work about. In one of our most popular annual calls VAE is looking for entries of recent art made by artists currently working in the following 11 states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. Contemporary South 2019 will be curated and juried by Rachel Reese, Associate Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Telfair in Savannah, Georgia. Rochester Contemporary Art Center 6x6x2019 – The International Small Art Phenomenon (NY)

Deadline: April 14. What brings together artists from all over the world of all different skill levels? There’s no entry fee so get creative and send RoCo your artworks by ‪April 14 or postmarked April 13. Rochester Contemporary Art Center (RoCo) is a venue for the exchange of ideas and a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) that was founded in 1977. Call for Entry: Regional Juried Solo Show (DC)

Deadline: April 15. Foundry Gallery is welcoming applications for a guest solo exhibit at its industrial-style space in Washington DC. Sweetwater Center for the Arts: Call for Solo Exhibition (PA)

 

Deadline: May 1. Sweetwater invites emerging and established artists who reside within 200 miles of Pittsburgh, PA to submit artwork for an opportunity to have a 5-week solo exhibition at Sweetwater. Open to artist working in all 2D and 3D media, film/video not accepted. Submit 10 images of artwork created within the last 3 years, an artist statement, image list and CV. Selected artist will receive a $200 stipend and will be asked to present an artist talk during the duration of the exhibition at Sweetwater. Sunny Art Center International Art Prize (UK)

Deadline: June 30, 2019. The Sunny Art Prize is an international art competition hosted by Sunny Art Centre, London. This fine art award is a global platform, giving an opportunity to emerging and established artists to showcase their talents to a wider audience. We aim to display artistic and cultural diversity to the international art scenes of London, Beijing, Guangzhou and Macau. Sunny Art Award will promote an exchange in creativity between Western and Eastern cultures. We are looking for a variety of submissions which can range from two-dimensional works such as paintings, drawings and photographs, to three-dimensional sculptures, and ceramics. The Creativity Grant Program State of Maryland (MD)

Deadline: Rolling. The purpose of the Creativity Grant Program is to strengthen the vitality and sustainability of artists and small organizations to maintain a strong and stable arts infrastructure in the State of Maryland. The Creativity Grant also provides opportunities to serve the growing needs of relevant arts projects and collaborations within Maryland communities. Artist/Writers: Cover Art for Academic Medicine

Deadline: Rolling. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. Artist/Writers: Medicine and the Arts (MATA) Opportunity

Deadline: Rolling. This column is the journal’s longest-running feature. It is published on two facing pages. The left-hand page features an excerpt from literature, a poem, a photograph, etc. Literature excerpts generally run no more than 700 words and may include a very brief introduction as needed. The right-hand page presents an original commentary of about 900 words that explores the relevance of the artwork to the teaching, learning, and/or practice of medicine. Since submissions cannot be fully accepted for publication until Academic Medicine acquires permission to reprint literary excerpts or artworks (which often takes many months), authors should include all relevant information about the piece they are explicating (publisher, museum, dates, etc.) to enable staff editors to find and contact the copyright holder. The Awesome Foundation Accepting Applications for Art Projects

Deadline: Open. The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is a worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of “awesomeness in the universe.” Established in 2009, the foundation distributes $1,000 grants on a monthly basis to projects and their creators. The money is pooled from ten or more self-organizing “micro-trustees.” The chapters are autonomous and organized by the trustees around geographic areas or topics of interest. Call for Artists: Maryland Art Place Seeks Proposals for Rotating Exhibition Partnership with Baltimore’s Hotel Indigo (MD)

Deadline: rolling. Maryland Art Place (MAP), in partnership with Hotel Indigo is pleased to announce an open ‘Call to Artists’. As an extension of MAP’s annual IMPACT public art partnership projects, MAP is working with Hotel Indigo to offer rotating exhibitions in Hotel indigo’s library and Poets Modern Cocktails and Eats. This opportunity is available to visual artists living or working in Maryland. Maryland Art Place will curate four exhibitions a year based on submissions entered through a rolling basis. Peripheral ARTeries – Biennial Contemporary Art Publication

Deadline: Rolling. Peripheral ARTeries is looking for artists to be featured in the new special Biennial Edition of their art publication, that comes to its 10th edition. This opportunity is great for both established and early career artists who need a boost to their artist portfolio. The 10th edition will once again explore and show current trends and tendencies in Contemporary Art: Peripheral ARTeries cultivates a spirit of openness through a unique collaborative and participatory approach.Each artist may submit a maximum of three works or projects made in any technique: painting, drawing, video art, experimental cinema, fine art photography, experimental media, mixed media, installations, public art, performance. Exhibit at Hotel Indigo (VA)

Artists works will displayed in the hotel’s gallery (220 S Union St, Old Town Alexandria) for a six-month period. Two-dimensional, framed works only. Artists will install the work using the hotel’s mounting hardware. Labels will be provided by the hotel. All sales handled by artist, no commission. The New Project Studio – Ongoing Opportunity (VA)

Residency: Maryland

Deadline: ongoing. Montgomery College, Rockville and Germantown Art Department is seeking proposals for its Artist-in-Residence Program, encouraging proposals that cultivate collaborative work between artists and students.

Water is exciting imagery to paint and there are many techniques to capture its facets. In this workshop, Patrick Kirwin walks students through how paint the ocean waves at the shore, reflections in a still lake and waterfalls. For speed, it is recommended to use acrylics so the class can paint quickly in layers. Bonus: watching Patrick demo how to paint is truly a mesmerizing experience.

Faces in Watercolor – Jackie Saunders

Learn to draw and paint human faces using shape, proportion, sighting techniques, contour and cross-contour line. Crash Course in Drawing – Deirdre Saunder

Been awhile since you’ve taken a drawing class? This workshop is the perfect refresher. Study fundamental drawing techniques primarily in pencil and charcoal and other drawing basics. Spinning Thread from Paper – Saaraliisa Ylitalo

Thread from paper? Why, of course! The art of making thread and using it to weave cloth dates back to 7th century Japan. In this class students prepare Japanese papers to make shifu; twist the paper into thread using a rough brick, hand held spindles and spinning wheels; and finally weave a small piece of cloth on a simple card loom from these hand spun threads. Learn how to color paper; use paper thread for uses such as book binding, knitting, and weaving.

Taking the Bull by the Horns: Creating a Body of Work – Diane Tesler

March 18-March 22

Participants plan and begin a series of three to four paintings based on their own photos and sketches. On the first evening, students meet with Diane to review ideas and plan subject matter for the week. Rolled canvas and stretching supplies are used to move beyond the boundaries of standard canvas sizes. This workshop offers a chance to explore an idea in depth and from different angles while initiating the practice of developing several paintings simultaneously. Following the workshop, participants are encouraged to keep in contact with Diane via email for feedback on the work in progress.

The District of Columbia Department of General Services’ Percent for Art Program: DC Public School Installations

Extended Deadline: March 4. The District of Columbia Department of General Services’ Percent for Art Program invites artists to apply to 26 works of art to be permanently installed at Coolidge High School, Hyde-Addison Elementary School, Kimball Elementary School and Maury Elementary Schools, in Washington, D.C.  Artworks include graphic design and two-and three dimensional.  Three months of fabrication during spring/summer with installation occurring right before the students return to school – this year July 15-August 15th for installs.  Please email [email protected] with any other questions. Westmoreland Art Nationals Juried Fine Art & Photography Exhibitions (PA)

Deadline: March 1. Artists are invited to submit entries for two juried fine art and photography competitions. The first exhibit will be held May 18 – June 5, 2019 at the Westmoreland County Community College (Youngwood, PA). The second exhibit will be held July 4-8, 2019 at the Westmoreland Arts & Heritage Festival (Latrobe, PA). $4,400 in awards. Call For Entry – Spectrum: DITTO (CT)

Deadline: March 2. The spring exhibit will showcase multiples – a pair, diptych, triptych or group of pieces that relate to each other. Selected works will highlight the juxtaposition, contrast, comparison, expansion, connection and separation between the pieces. Jurors will be looking for submissions of two or more pieces that make statements that are both subtle and obvious, complementary and conflicting. Spectrum is a juried exhibition of original, contemporary artwork in all media. Entries must have been created within the past two years and not previously exhibited at the Carriage Barn. Acceptable media includes painting, prints, drawing, photography and mixed media. Contemporary South 2019 Call-For-Art (NC)

Deadline: April 6. VAE’s Contemporary South (CoSo) exhibit showcases what the South is currently thinking, discussing, and making work about. In one of our most popular annual calls VAE is looking for entries of recent art made by artists currently working in the following 11 states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. Sweetwater Center for the Arts: Call for Solo Exhibition (PA)

Deadline: May 1. Sweetwater invites emerging and established artists who reside within 200 miles of Pittsburgh, PA to submit artwork for an opportunity to have a 5-week solo exhibition at Sweetwater. Open to artist working in all 2D and 3D media, film/video not accepted. Submit 10 images of artwork created within the last 3 years, an artist statement, image list and CV. Wide Open 10 (NY)

Deadline: February 24. The Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition (BWAC) announces a call to artists for an upcoming art exhibition, May 11 through July 7, 2019 at BWAC Gallery in Brooklyn, NY. $3,000 in Cash Awards. Juror: Ylinka Barotto, Assistant Curator at the Guggenheim Museum. This call for submission is open to all residents of the U.S. and its Territories 18 years of age or older. This is a juried exhibition for artists working in all traditional and non-traditional 2D and 3D media, including film/video when part of an installation. All artwork must be original in concept, design and execution. Note: Crafts, kit work or reproductions of original works in other media (such as giclee reproductions of oil paintings), unless used as part of a mixed media work, will not be considered. Call for Exhibition Proposals (PA)

Deadline: February 28. The Olin Art Gallery on the campus of Washington & Jefferson College, Washington, PA, is now accepting exhibition proposals in any medium for the 2019-20 academic year. Proposals may include solo or group exhibitions. Submissions must include: 10-20 digital images (jpg-format), contact information, artist statements for all participating artists, an image list (including title, media, size, and date completed for each work), and a resume or CV. Art Speaks Juried Exhibition: Call for Artists (VA)

Deadline: March 1. Art Speaks presents the Seventh Annual Juried Exhibition, to be eligible for prizes totaling $5,000 (including $1,500 for Best in Show) artists must be a resident of Virginia, and 18+ years. Spark Box Studio Dawson Residency Award and Bursary (Canada)

Deadline: March 1, 2019. This award is open to residents of North America. Spark Box Studio is accepting applications from emerging, mid-career, and established artists. One artist will receive a month-long residency at our studio in Prince Edward County, plus the $1,000 Dawson bursary. The selected applicant will be granted a semi-private studio space and be given access to the Spark Box Studio equipment and resources. As well, the winner will be provided with living accommodations for their month-long stay. We support a range of disciplines including; drawers, illustrators, painters, writers, printmakers, film makers, performance artists, multidisciplinary artists, curators, book makers, musicians and photographers (digital).

The 40th Annual Virginia Watercolor Society Juried Exhibition 2019 (VA)

Deadline: March 2. Paintings in watercolor and other watermedia including water soluble ink on paper or Yupo. No canvas, digital, computer generated or Gicleé art. If other media are used, water based media must dominate the piece. Collage elements will be accepted if the adhered paper pieces are painted in watermedia by the artist. No computer generated, digital or printed clippings will be allowed. All paintings must have been completed on or after January 1, 2015 and not have been painted under supervision. Paintings may not infringe upon another’s copyright. If photo references are used, they must be the artist’s own photographs. Paintings accepted for previous VWS jurored exhibitions are ineligible. Deadline: March 25. Main Street Arts in Clifton Springs, NY seeks entries for a juried art exhibition, May 25 – June 28, 2019. $1,000 in cash awards. Best in Show receives $500. Juror: Margot Muto, head of exhibitions at Memorial Art Gallery, Rochester, NY. This is a national exhibition with a focus on things decomposing, being in a state of decay, deconstructed, or paired down. Arlington Arts Center’s 2018 Regional Biennial Now Accepting Applications (VA)

Deadline: March 25. Arlington Arts Center is pleased to announce a call for submissions for a new regional biennial, which will take place for the first time in the fall of 2019. Featuring work by artists from across the Mid-Atlantic, the exhibition will explore current material and conceptual trends with a focus on work that addresses the concerns of he present moment whether political, cultural, personal, economic, artistic, or all of the above. Deadline: March 31. Art Enables presents “Limitation:LIberation” Open Call for artists. Open to artists living in D.C., Maryland, or Virginia. Work should be made within the last 5 years by an artist who lives or works in D.C., Maryland, or Virginia and work should consist of a limited cool palette or limited warm palette. Cool colors are defined as Red-Violet, Violet, Blue-Violet, Blue, Blue-Green, and Green. Warm colors are defined as Red, Red-Orange, Orange, Yellow-Orange, Yellow, and Yellow-Green. Propose an exhibition at UMW Galleries (VA)

Deadline: April 1. The UMW Galleries accept proposals from professional artists and curators for solo and group exhibitions for each of our gallery spaces (Ridderhof Martin Gallery and duPont Gallery). Proposals should be submitted via the UMW Galleries submittable form.  Deadlines: Proposals are accepted year round, but are collected for review on November 1 and April 1. Any applications received after the deadline will automatically be considered for the following deadline. Notification will be given via email within a year of submission. Include the following attachments in your submission: A description of the proposed exhibition. An artist’s statement or curatorial statement. Artist/ curator current resume or CV. Del Ray Art on the Avenue (VA)

Deadline: April 1, rolling. Art on the Avenue is a multicultural arts and music festival organized by the Del Ray Community Partnership, and hosted by the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria. The show welcomes applications from all craft artists, and is known for high quality artwork in a friendly, neighborhood atmosphere. Art on the Avenue is a juried show and all work must be original, handmade, created and exhibited by the approved artist. The LUX Center for the Arts: 2019-2020 Residencies (NE)

Deadline: April 4. The LUX Center for the Arts in Lincoln, Nebraska is currently accepting applications for 2019-2020 year long residencies in all media. A strong desire to teach is required. Artists with more than one area of expertise and an MFA are preferred. This residency can be extended an additional year if both the LUX and the artist agree. All residents receive free studio space (shared or private depending on medium and space available) and 24-hour access and use of equipment in the studio area to which they applied. Ceramics residents have access to regularly stocked clay and glaze materials and use of kilns in exchange for studio maintenance duties. All residents can buy materials from the LUX at cost.Residents have priority for paid, on-site teaching opportunities including community art classes for youth and adults. Residents with an MFA or BFA in painting, ceramics, or metalsmithing have the opportunity to teach college art classes for Doane College-Lincoln campus, held at the LUX. Sunny Art Center International Art Prize (UK)

Deadline: June 30, 2019. The Sunny Art Prize is an international art competition hosted by Sunny Art Centre, London. This fine art award is a global platform, giving an opportunity to emerging and established artists to showcase their talents to a wider audience. We aim to display artistic and cultural diversity to the international art scenes of London, Beijing, Guangzhou and Macau. The purpose of the Creativity Grant Program is to strengthen the vitality and sustainability of artists and small organizations to maintain a strong and stable arts infrastructure in the State of Maryland. The Creativity Grant also provides opportunities to serve the growing needs of relevant arts projects and collaborations within Maryland communities. Artist/Writers: Cover Art for Academic Medicine

Deadline: Rolling. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. Artist/Writers: Medicine and the Arts (MATA) Opportunity

Deadline: Rolling. This column is the journal’s longest-running feature. It is published on two facing pages. The left-hand page features an excerpt from literature, a poem, a photograph, etc. Literature excerpts generally run no more than 700 words and may include a very brief introduction as needed. The right-hand page presents an original commentary of about 900 words that explores the relevance of the artwork to the teaching, learning, and/or practice of medicine. Since submissions cannot be fully accepted for publication until Academic Medicine acquires permission to reprint literary excerpts or artworks (which often takes many months), authors should include all relevant information about the piece they are explicating (publisher, museum, dates, etc.) to enable staff editors to find and contact the copyright holder. The Awesome Foundation Accepting Applications for Art Projects

Deadline: Open. The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is a worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of “awesomeness in the universe.” Established in 2009, the foundation distributes $1,000 grants on a monthly basis to projects and their creators. The money is pooled from ten or more self-organizing “micro-trustees.” The chapters are autonomous and organized by the trustees around geographic areas or topics of interest. Call for Artists: Maryland Art Place Seeks Proposals for Rotating Exhibition Partnership with Baltimore’s Hotel Indigo (MD)

Deadline: rolling. Maryland Art Place (MAP), in partnership with Hotel Indigo is pleased to announce an open ‘Call to Artists’. As an extension of MAP’s annual IMPACT public art partnership projects, MAP is working with Hotel Indigo to offer rotating exhibitions in Hotel indigo’s library and Poets Modern Cocktails and Eats. The 51st Patrons’ Show has come and gone. With over 700 pieces and counting in the Patrons’ Show Fundraiser, this year’s juror, Scip Barnhart, had his work cut out for him. So did all of our patrons making their lists (we spotted paper lists, 3 foot long spreadsheets, and Art Thief app lists among the crowd)!

Patrons’ Show Through the Years

This year is our 51st Patrons’ Show and we sure have come a long way when we look at photos from 2004 where many of you CAMPED outside the Torpedo Factory in sub-freezing temperatures!

These days we have all of the amenities of tech (and heating) available to us, but Patrons’ show is JUST as fun. Take a stroll with us down memory lane as we remember back to the by-gone days of Patrons’ Show!

2004

In 2004 eager Patrons’ Show goers used to actually camp in tents outside or line up early to get access to the building! Do any of you remember this frigid way to enjoy the Patrons’ Show?

2013

The Art Thief Patrons’ Show app hadn’t launched yet in 2013, but Patrons’ Show goers had their favorites tracked via pen and paper. Do you still use pen and paper to track on drawing day or has the ease and convenience of Art Thief won you over?

2014

2014 featured our littlest Patrons’ getting ready to select their artwork!

2015

Fish eye lenses capture the a packed Torpedo Factory Art Center at 2015’s Patrons’ Show! Patrons’ Pack the house ready to take home their favorite work of art.

2016

The Art Thief app debuted in 2016 and forever changed the way we organize ourselves for the drawing at Patrons’ Show!

2017

Patron’s got behind The Art Thief app…but also printed out their lists to accommodate the limited wifi in the packed Torpedo Factory space!

2018

The 50th Anniversary Patrons’ Show was a hit (and even had its own t-shirt design)! 2018 also featured a “mouth” chair by Art League instructor Ryan Rakhshan.

The 51st Patrons’ Show will be this Sunday starting at 5 pm in the Torpedo Factory Art Center as well as The Art League Gallery. If you haven’t already, First Choice Raffle tickets are still available. Make sure to visit the gallery ahead of time on Saturday or Sunday morning to view all of the artwork on your list (or to make your list, if you’re more of a procrastinator). If you’ve never been to the Patrons’ Show, this post is a great guide for first-timers! See you Sunday!

Patrons’ Show Primer: Your Guide to Conquering Patrons’ Show Creatively

The Patrons’ Show Fundraiser is a lot of fun. It also takes a little work.

So if you’re attending for the very first time on Sunday, we want to help you prepare! Here are our tips for first-time patrons. (It’s impossible to fully describe the experience, but we’ve done our best.)

The basics

You already have your ticket. Here’s how things will go down on Sunday:

  • Show up early. The gallery will open at 10:00 am, and the drawing starts promptly at 5:00 pm — be sure to be seated by then (seating is a little different this year)!
  • This year, the building closes at 4:00 pm and reopens at 4:45 pm. The gallery also closes at 3:45 pm.
  • Ticket holder names are drawn and called in a random order.
  • When you hear your name, call out the number of the artwork you want, loudly and clearly. Staff with walkie-talkies will be nearby to relay your selection to the nerve center on the first floor. Congratulations!
  • Keep track of what’s already been taken.These numbers will be announced over the PA and shown on the screens.
  • Stay seated until the break. If you’ve chosen your artwork, the break is your time to go grab it and “check out” at the designated check-out tables. If you’re still waiting to hear your name, this is your chance to review your list and get psyched up for the next round.

How to prepare

As you can tell, it’s not enough to just pick your favorite — it might be gone by the time we get to your name! That’s why it’s important to build out a substantial list of your favorite art!

  • We recommend making a list at least 100 works long. Many people have much longer lists!
  • There are a number of tools to help you:
  • Before you finalize your list, make sure to view all the artwork in person in the gallery. After all, it’s the artwork that will be hanging in your home — not the photo of the artwork!
  • If you’d like to go home with more than one artwork but not a chair, you can select “Extra Artwork” tickets here.
  • First-choice raffle tickets are also available, for those who want a chance to be the very first called! This is a great way to increase the odds that you’ll get what you want!
  • If you’re using the app, be sure to update one last time before you leave home on Sunday. There’s no public wifi in the building, and data might be iffy.
    • You can email your list to yourself (Options → Email List) as a backup.

Enjoy yourself

The Patrons’ Show Fundraiser has been described as a block party. Here are some guidelines for an enjoyable experience:

  • Refreshments are welcome. Please keep your coolers small enough to fit under a chair, and please — no tables, other furniture, or food deliveries.
  • Unfortunately, there is no room for children or pets. They wouldn’t have a good time, anyway: it gets crowded and noisy.
  • On that note, please keep your conversations at a low volume. It’s important to make sure people can hear the announcements, names, and numbers being called out.
  • Please remain seated until the announced breaks.
  • Be kind to your neighbors.

Don’t miss out

The main drawing isn’t the only fun to be had!

First choice raffle: The first choice raffle is a separate drawing that happens just before the main event. When you buy a ticket, you mark the piece you want most of all. A single ticket is drawn at 5:00 pm, and the piece marked on it is set aside for that lucky person to pick up! You do not need a regular Patrons’ Show ticket to participate.

Raffle tickets are $15 each or two for $25, available for purchase in the gallery up until 1:00 pm Sunday.

After-auction: There will be a few pieces left over at the end of the drawing. Join us immediately after for the aptly named after-auction, where you can get more artwork for a steal! You’ll register for a paddle and bid on artworks just like in a regular auction.

Door prizes: The last few names called each round get special prizes!

March150, Target Gallery’s annual special exhibition and art sale, returns with all proceeds going to support new exhibitions and programs at Target Gallery. Open to all! (provided the artwork submitted meets the guidelines). A $15 fee guarantees entry into the exhibition. The District of Columbia Department of General Services’ Percent for Art Program: DC Public School Installations

Deadline: February 22. The District of Columbia Department of General Services’ Percent for Art Program invites artists to apply to 26 works of art to be permanently installed at Coolidge High School, Hyde-Addison Elementary School, Kimball Elementary School and Maury Elementary Schools, in Washington, D.C.  Artworks include graphic design and two-and three dimensional.  Three months of fabrication during spring/summer with installation occurring right before the students return to school – this year July 15-August 15th for installs.  Please email [email protected] with any other questions. Target Gallery “Habitat”

Deadline: April 28. Exhibition Juror: Ellyn Weiss, DC-based artist and curator. Target Gallery invites artists working in all visual media to submit to Habitats. In this group exhibition, Habitats will explore the relationship between humans and nature creating a dialogue on the impact that we make on the earth and our environments. Ceramics Monthly Emerging Artist Contest

Deadline: February 15. All ceramic artists, both US and international, who have been actively pursuing a career in ceramics for 10 years or less are invited to apply to the Ceramics Monthly Emerging Artist competition. Wide Open 10 (NY)

Deadline: February 24. The Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition (BWAC) announces a call to artists for an upcoming art exhibition, May 11 through July 7, 2019 at BWAC Gallery in Brooklyn, NY. $3,000 in Cash Awards. Juror: Ylinka Barotto, Assistant Curator at the Guggenheim Museum. This call for submission is open to all residents of the U.S. and its Territories 18 years of age or older. This is a juried exhibition for artists working in all traditional and non-traditional 2D and 3D media, including film/video when part of an installation. All artwork must be original in concept, design and execution. Note: Crafts, kit work or reproductions of original works in other media (such as giclee reproductions of oil paintings), unless used as part of a mixed media work, will not be considered. Project “Cerrado Ecoarte” Art Residency (Brazil)

Deadline: January 18-February 20. The registration for the artistic residence “Cerrado Ecoarte 2019” are open. Artists from anywhere in the world who work in any artistic medium can apply. The residency program is part of a master’s research for the multimedia artist TKuri and is linked to the Graduate Program in Visual Arts at the University of Brasilia under the supervision of Christus Nóbrega. The purpose of this residence is to provide an immersive experience in the Cerrado, a unique biome because of its diversity and of strategic importance for the conservation of important Brazilian rivers. The selected artists will be housed for 10 days in the Botanical Garden of Brasilia (JBB), during the month of July. Meanwhile, they will participate in workshops, lectures and discussions on topics related to ecology, environmental conservation, alternative nutrition, phytotherapy, biodiversity and cultural history of the cerrado, among others. Call for Exhibition Proposals (PA)

Deadline: February 28. The Olin Art Gallery on the campus of Washington & Jefferson College, Washington, PA, is now accepting exhibition proposals in any medium for the 2019-20 academic year. Proposals may include solo or group exhibitions. Submissions must include: 10-20 digital images (jpg-format), contact information, artist statements for all participating artists, an image list (including title, media, size, and date completed for each work), and a resume or CV. Proposals will be accepted via email only (email should be no larger than 10m – ZIP file, Mac compatible, preferred). There is NO entry fee. The application must be received by February 28, 2019. 7th Annual Art Speaks Juried Exhibition Calling All Virginia Artists (VA)

Deadline: March 1. Presented by the Bay School Community Arts Center. Opening Reception: Saturday, April 27, 2019, 4:00-6:00 p.m. Must be a resident of Virginia and over 18 years old. Art Speaks Juried Exhibition: Call for Artists (VA)

Deadline: March 1. Art Speaks presents the Seventh Annual Juried Exhibition, to be eligible for prizes totaling $5,000 (including $1,500 for Best in Show) artists must be a resident of Virginia, and 18+ years. Artists may submit up to three entries. Entry fees: $25 before February 1,  $35 after February 1, $20 for students. Spark Box Studio Dawson Residency Award and Bursary (Canada)

Deadline: March 1, 2019. This award is open to residents of North America. Spark Box Studio is accepting applications from emerging, mid-career, and established artists. One artist will receive a month-long residency at our studio in Prince Edward County, plus the $1,000 Dawson bursary. The selected applicant will be granted a semi-private studio space and be given access to the Spark Box Studio equipment and resources. As well, the winner will be provided with living accommodations for their month-long stay. We support a range of disciplines including; drawers, illustrators, painters, writers, printmakers, film makers, performance artists, multidisciplinary artists, curators, book makers, musicians and photographers (digital).

The 40th Annual Virginia Watercolor Society Juried Exhibition 2019 (VA)

Deadline: March 2. Paintings in watercolor and other watermedia including water soluble ink on paper or Yupo. No canvas, digital, computer generated or Gicleé art. If other media are used, water based media must dominate the piece. Collage elements will be accepted if the adhered paper pieces are painted in watermedia by the artist. No computer generated, digital or printed clippings will be allowed. All paintings must have been completed on or after January 1, 2015 and not have been painted under supervision. Paintings may not infringe upon another’s copyright. If photo references are used, they must be the artist’s own photographs. Paintings accepted for previous VWS jurored exhibitions are ineligible. Gallery Underground’s next National Juried Show: RISK (VA)

Deadline: March 22. Gallery Underground invites artists working in all media to submit works depicting or representing risk. These can take the form of either literal depictions of taking risks, or more figurative demonstrations of the artist’s personal  risk-taking in their subject matter, medium or technique. For this exhibition, artists will submit a paragraph explaining how their submitted works represent the theme; these paragraphs will be displayed next to each accepted piece. de/composition: a National Juried Exhibition (NY)

Deadline: March 25. Main Street Arts in Clifton Springs, NY seeks entries for a juried art exhibition, May 25 – June 28, 2019. $1,000 in cash awards. Best in Show receives $500. Juror: Margot Muto, head of exhibitions at Memorial Art Gallery, Rochester, NY. This is a national exhibition with a focus on things decomposing, being in a state of decay, deconstructed, or paired down. Both the conceptual side as well as technical/ compositional side of the theme will be encouraged. Arlington Arts Center’s 2018 Regional Biennial Now Accepting Applications (VA)

Deadline: March 25. Arlington Arts Center is pleased to announce a call for submissions for a new regional biennial, which will take place for the first time in the fall of 2019. Featuring work by artists from across the Mid-Atlantic, the exhibition will explore current material and conceptual trends with a focus on work that addresses the concerns of he present moment whether political, cultural, personal, economic, artistic, or all of the above. Art Enables “Limitation:Liberation” Open Call (DC)

Deadline: March 31. Art Enables presents “Limitation:LIberation” Open Call for artists. Open to artists living in D.C., Maryland, or Virginia. Work should be made within the last 5 years by an artist who lives or works in D.C., Maryland, or Virginia and work should consist of a limited cool palette or limited warm palette. Cool colors are defined as Red-Violet, Violet, Blue-Violet, Blue, Blue-Green, and Green. Warm colors are defined as Red, Red-Orange, Orange, Yellow-Orange, Yellow, and Yellow-Green. Propose an exhibition at UMW Galleries (VA)

Deadline: April 1. The UMW Galleries accept proposals from professional artists and curators for solo and group exhibitions for each of our gallery spaces (Ridderhof Martin Gallery and duPont Gallery). Proposals should be submitted via the UMW Galleries submittable form.  Deadlines: Proposals are accepted year round, but are collected for review on November 1 and April 1. Any applications received after the deadline will automatically be considered for the following deadline. Notification will be given via email within a year of submission. Include the following attachments in your submission: A description of the proposed exhibition. An artist’s statement or curatorial statement. Artist/ curator current resume or CV. Three to five images that are indicative of the work to be exhibited.

Del Ray Art on the Avenue (VA)

Deadline: April 1, rolling. Art on the Avenue is a multicultural arts and music festival organized by the Del Ray Community Partnership, and hosted by the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria. The show welcomes applications from all craft artists, and is known for high quality artwork in a friendly, neighborhood atmosphere. Art on the Avenue is a juried show and all work must be original, handmade, created and exhibited by the approved artist. The LUX Center for the Arts: 2019-2020 Residencies (NE)

Deadline: April 4. The LUX Center for the Arts in Lincoln, Nebraska is currently accepting applications for 2019-2020 year long residencies in all media. A strong desire to teach is required. Artists with more than one area of expertise and an MFA are preferred. This residency can be extended an additional year if both the LUX and the artist agree. All residents receive free studio space (shared or private depending on medium and space available) and 24-hour access and use of equipment in the studio area to which they applied. Ceramics residents have access to regularly stocked clay and glaze materials and use of kilns in exchange for studio maintenance duties. All residents can buy materials from the LUX at cost.Residents have priority for paid, on-site teaching opportunities including community art classes for youth and adults. Residents with an MFA or BFA in painting, ceramics, or metalsmithing have the opportunity to teach college art classes for Doane College-Lincoln campus, held at the LUX. Rochester Contemporary Art Center 6x6x2019 – The International Small Art Phenomenon (NY)

Deadline: April 14. What brings together artists from all over the world of all different skill levels? There’s no entry fee so get creative and send RoCo your artworks by ‪April 14 or postmarked April 13. Rochester Contemporary Art Center (RoCo) is a venue for the exchange of ideas and a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) that was founded in 1977. Sunny Art Center International Art Prize (UK)

Deadline: June 30, 2019. The Sunny Art Prize is an international art competition hosted by Sunny Art Centre, London. This fine art award is a global platform, giving an opportunity to emerging and established artists to showcase their talents to a wider audience. We aim to display artistic and cultural diversity to the international art scenes of London, Beijing, Guangzhou and Macau. Sunny Art Award will promote an exchange in creativity between Western and Eastern cultures. We are looking for a variety of submissions which can range from two-dimensional works such as paintings, drawings and photographs, to three-dimensional sculptures, and ceramics. The purpose of the Creativity Grant Program is to strengthen the vitality and sustainability of artists and small organizations to maintain a strong and stable arts infrastructure in the State of Maryland. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. Artist/Writers: Medicine and the Arts (MATA) Opportunity

Deadline: Rolling. This column is the journal’s longest-running feature. It is published on two facing pages. The left-hand page features an excerpt from literature, a poem, a photograph, etc. Literature excerpts generally run no more than 700 words and may include a very brief introduction as needed. The right-hand page presents an original commentary of about 900 words that explores the relevance of the artwork to the teaching, learning, and/or practice of medicine. Since submissions cannot be fully accepted for publication until Academic Medicine acquires permission to reprint literary excerpts or artworks (which often takes many months), authors should include all relevant information about the piece they are explicating (publisher, museum, dates, etc.) to enable staff editors to find and contact the copyright holder. The Awesome Foundation Accepting Applications for Art Projects

Deadline: Open. The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is a worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of “awesomeness in the universe.” Established in 2009, the foundation distributes $1,000 grants on a monthly basis to projects and their creators. The money is pooled from ten or more self-organizing “micro-trustees.” The chapters are autonomous and organized by the trustees around geographic areas or topics of interest. Call for Artists: Maryland Art Place Seeks Proposals for Rotating Exhibition Partnership with Baltimore’s Hotel Indigo (MD)

Deadline: rolling. Maryland Art Place (MAP), in partnership with Hotel Indigo is pleased to announce an open ‘Call to Artists’. As an extension of MAP’s annual IMPACT public art partnership projects, MAP is working with Hotel Indigo to offer rotating exhibitions in Hotel indigo’s library and Poets Modern Cocktails and Eats. This opportunity is available to visual artists living or working in Maryland. Maryland Art Place will curate four exhibitions a year based on submissions entered through a rolling basis. Stealing the Show: The Art Thief App Simplifies Patrons’ Show

This post modified from “Make the Most out of Patrons’ Show With the Art Thief App” blog post that ran February 7, 2018. 

Today’s guest post is by Steve Roberson, the founder and president of Zurka Interactive, a web development and information technology company headquartered in Tysons. This will be his 6th year attending the Patrons’ Show. He typically sits in section A2 and would love to get your feedback about the app—be sure to rate Art Thief in the App Store or on your Android device!

The Patrons’ Show Fundraiser is a fabulous, unique event, and this marks its 50th year. Can you believe that?!

My hope is that if you’re coming this year, you’ll be using Art Thief of the Patrons’ Show, the app designed and built just for this event. If you’re not sure about going to the Patrons’ Show, stop that nonsense — you need to buy a ticket now. You really don’t want to miss out.

I’d like to think that Art Thief [available in the App store and for Android] makes the drawing a whole lot easier and the weeks leading up to the event more fun and engaging. Of course, I’m biased — I wrote the app. If you’ve read my previous guest blog post, you already know the history of Art Thief, so I won’t go into it here.

Using the Art Thief app at Patrons’ Show.

I’d like to take this opportunity to tell you about some features of Art Thief that many users aren’t aware of, but, before I do, let’s get something straight. Do you have to use Art Thief to have a fantastic time at the Patrons’ Show? Absolutely not. If you have a paper system that has served you well for years, good for you. I respect that. I won’t judge you.

We’re all here to have a great time and support a phenomenal institution, The Art League. In fact, if the people in the row behind you make fun of you for your paper system as they pour yet another glass of what is reported to be a well-balanced Bordeaux, let me know. I’ll talk to them. After all, I’m particularly fond of Bordeaux.

Swiping all around

When you’re looking at a work of art in the app, you can swipe left to jump to the next piece or swipe right to go back to the previous artwork. If you swipe up, it adds a star to the rating of the art, and, just like you’d expect, swiping down removes a star. This works on both iPad and iPhone. I find this particularly useful while walking through the gallery with an iPhone because I can rate the art and swipe to the next piece with one hand and a glance to confirm my actions.

Sneaking a Peek

During the drawing, you spend most — if not all — of your time in “The Show” tab of the app. It’s not obvious, but if you swipe from the left edge of the app, this reveals a list of available art in the order you’ve set up.

This is particularly useful later on in the drawing. I know I’ve been in the third round and thought to myself, “Should that really be my top pick?” By taking a peek at my list, I was able to quickly look at the other art that was still available. If you’d like to rearrange the order of the art you’re peeking at, just press down and hold onto the art you’d like to move. It will dislodge from the list, and you can slide it into its new position.

If you swipe from the right edge, you can reveal a list of all the art you’ve marked as taken. This is useful if you want to make sure you’ve entered the correct number. Or even just take one last loving look at that beautiful piece that got away.

QR Codes in Action

While you’re peeking at the artwork that’s been taken, you’ll notice there’s a link in the upper righthand corner called “Scan.” During the breaks, a QR Code will be be displayed on the monitors in the Torpedo Factory. Tap the scan button, and your camera will appear on your screen. Now point your device at the QR Code. Your phone/iPad vibrates once it takes a picture and then automatically updates your list of taken artwork, correcting for any mistakes you may have made. That QR Code contains the official list of art that has already been taken.

In pop culture art collectors are always played by affluent, mustachioed, bespectacled men who walk around galleries head cocked to the side in pompous consideration. These characters have unlimited funds, know the gallerists, and the artists by their first names and seem to collect art for the sake of collecting…and for the sake of making others know that they’re a collector.

The real life practice of art collecting; however, is not reserved for the posh upper set, but rather is accessible to anyone who is looking to bring art into their lives and their spaces. Still, there is a difference between bringing wall art (the kind you can pick up at a big box store) and fine art into your space.

But why buy art? Collecting fine art, made lovingly by an artist instead of mass generated by a computer, can be more about the journey than the destination. It is for this reason that an art collection isn’t clutter, but instead becomes a series of prized possessions that spark joy (to borrow Marie Kondo’s term) for generations to come. Don’t know where to start? Here’s how get started with your own art collection.

Identify your taste and budget

Not sure what you like? Time to visit your local gallery and start looking at art (may we suggest The Art League Gallery!) Unlike art museums, the art here should list how much it costs, as well as the materials used in the piece. Track your favorites by taking photos (in galleries that allow photography) and keeping an album in your phone, or links in a spreadsheet. Do you notice any similarities? Are you instantly drawn the pastel washes of watercolor, or the depth of oil, or do are you more taken by 3D work? Take note of these similarities. Typically, mediums like watercolor and drawings are a priced a little cheaper than large scale oil works or sculptures. If you’re just starting out, consider an original photograph or paper work (which tend to be cheaper), or think about starting out with a print from your favorite artists.

Get your home ready

Art takes up space. But even if you’re in a small space, artwork can take a center stage in your home design. Do you prefer a minimalist abode? Modern art might work best to add color to your space. Is your pad more color-filled and eclectic? Look for a variety of art that fits your taste and interior decor. You’ll also need to make sure that your walls are ready to hang art, or that you have the proper infrastructure to display your artwork.

Research Artists

It’s the dream to walk into a gallery and fall in love with a piece and take it home that day! In reality though, finding artwork to fit your budget (unless you have a very sizable budget) is quite the research process. Getting involved in your local community of art will help you not only to identify emerging artists whose work you admire, but it will also help you to hear of insider events and openings that will save you time, effort and frustration.

Attend shows in your local community

The Art League Gallery features monthly shows featuring local artists as well as solo shows highlighting an established, jury-selected artist’s work. Visiting monthly is a great way to get to know local artists’ work, and identify emerging artists whose work you can find out more about. The Patrons’ Show, on February 17, is a great way to get started (or continue) your art collection on a budget. With over 700 works of art to choose from, every ticket holder walks away with a piece of art valued at $225 and above. No wonder tickets sell out so fast for this fast paced and fun event!

Document your purchase

Congratulations! You’ve finally purchased your artwork! What you need to do now is document your purchase. The gallery should include a receipt with your work, or if you’re buying it online, make sure to save the receipt or any email correspondence you have with the artist. Should the artwork be worth more than you purchased for it in the future…you’ll need to make sure that you can authenticate the purchase and the work.

Deadline: March 31. Art Enables presents “Limitation:LIberation” Open Call for artists. Open to artists living in D.C., Maryland, or Virginia. Work should be made within the last 5 years by an artist who lives or works in D.C., Maryland, or Virginia and work should consist of a limited cool palette or limited warm palette. Cool colors are defined as Red-Violet, Violet, Blue-Violet, Blue, Blue-Green, and Green. Warm colors are defined as Red, Red-Orange, Orange, Yellow-Orange, Yellow, and Yellow-Green. Gallery Underground “Risk” (VA)

Deadline: March 22. Gallery Underground in Arlington, VA seeks entries for a juried art exhibition, May 1-24, 2019. Up to $500 in awards. Juror: Sandy Maudlin. Artists working in all media are invited to submit works depicting or representing risk. These can take the form of either literal depictions of taking risks, or more figurative demonstrations of the artist’s personal risk-taking in their subject matter, medium or technique. Ceramics Monthly Emerging Artist Contest

Deadline: February 15. All ceramic artists, both US and international, who have been actively pursuing a career in ceramics for 10 years or less are invited to apply to the Ceramics Monthly Emerging Artist competition. Project “Cerrado Ecoarte” Art Residency (Brazil)

Deadline: January 18-February 20. The registration for the artistic residence “Cerrado Ecoarte 2019” are open. Artists from anywhere in the world who work in any artistic medium can apply. The residency program is part of a master’s research for the multimedia artist TKuri and is linked to the Graduate Program in Visual Arts at the University of Brasilia under the supervision of Christus Nóbrega. The purpose of this residence is to provide an immersive experience in the Cerrado, a unique biome because of its diversity and of strategic importance for the conservation of important Brazilian rivers. The selected artists will be housed for 10 days in the Botanical Garden of Brasilia (JBB), during the month of July. Meanwhile, they will participate in workshops, lectures and discussions on topics related to ecology, environmental conservation, alternative nutrition, phytotherapy, biodiversity and cultural history of the cerrado, among others. 76th Regional Exhibition Call for Entries (NY)

Deadline: February 6. The Arnot Art Museum announces a call for artists for their 76th Regional Exhibition. Artists must be 18 or older and live in Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, or Vermont. Work over five years old or shown before in any Arnot Art Museum exhibition is not eligible. There is a maximum of two entries per artist. The Arnot Art Museum is a landmark in downtown Elmira, housed in the 1833 neo-classical mansion of John Arnot, Sr. His son, Matthias H. Arnot, added a Picture Gallery in the 1880’s. Deadline: February 28. The Olin Art Gallery on the campus of Washington & Jefferson College, Washington, PA, is now accepting exhibition proposals in any medium for the 2019-20 academic year. Spark Box Studio Dawson Residency Award and Bursary (Canada)

Deadline: March 1, 2019. This award is open to residents of North America. Spark Box Studio is accepting applications from emerging, mid-career, and established artists. One artist will receive a month-long residency at our studio in Prince Edward County, plus the $1,000 Dawson bursary. The selected applicant will be granted a semi-private studio space and be given access to the Spark Box Studio equipment and resources. As well, the winner will be provided with living accommodations for their month-long stay. The 40th Annual Virginia Watercolor Society Juried Exhibition 2019 (VA)

Deadline: March 2. Paintings in watercolor and other watermedia including water soluble ink on paper or Yupo. No canvas, digital, computer generated or Gicleé art. If other media are used, water based media must dominate the piece. Collage elements will be accepted if the adhered paper pieces are painted in watermedia by the artist. No computer generated, digital or printed clippings will be allowed. All paintings must have been completed on or after January 1, 2015 and not have been painted under supervision. Paintings may not infringe upon another’s copyright. If photo references are used, they must be the artist’s own photographs. Paintings accepted for previous VWS jurored exhibitions are ineligible. Gallery Underground’s next National Juried Show: RISK (VA)

Deadline: March 22. Gallery Underground invites artists working in all media to submit works depicting or representing risk. These can take the form of either literal depictions of taking risks, or more figurative demonstrations of the artist’s personal  risk-taking in their subject matter, medium or technique. For this exhibition, artists will submit a paragraph explaining how their submitted works represent the theme; these paragraphs will be displayed next to each accepted piece. Arlington Arts Center’s 2018 Regional Biennial Now Accepting Applications (VA)

Deadline: March 25. Arlington Arts Center is pleased to announce a call for submissions for a new regional biennial, which will take place for the first time in the fall of 2019. Featuring work by artists from across the Mid-Atlantic, the exhibition will explore current material and conceptual trends with a focus on work that addresses the concerns of he present moment whether political, cultural, personal, economic, artistic, or all of the above. Baltimore Watercolor Society’s Mid-Atlantic Exhibition at the BlackRock Center for the Arts

Propose an exhibition at UMW Galleries (VA)

Deadline: April 1. The UMW Galleries accept proposals from professional artists and curators for solo and group exhibitions for each of our gallery spaces (Ridderhof Martin Gallery and duPont Gallery). Proposals should be submitted via the UMW Galleries submittable form.  Deadlines: Proposals are accepted year round, but are collected for review on November 1 and April 1. Any applications received after the deadline will automatically be considered for the following deadline. Notification will be given via email within a year of submission. Include the following attachments in your submission: A description of the proposed exhibition. An artist’s statement or curatorial statement. Artist/ curator current resume or CV. Del Ray Art on the Avenue (VA)

Deadline: April 1, rolling. Art on the Avenue is a multicultural arts and music festival organized by the Del Ray Community Partnership, and hosted by the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria. The show welcomes applications from all craft artists, and is known for high quality artwork in a friendly, neighborhood atmosphere. The LUX Center for the Arts: 2019-2020 Residencies (NE)

Deadline: April 4. The LUX Center for the Arts in Lincoln, Nebraska is currently accepting applications for 2019-2020 year long residencies in all media. A strong desire to teach is required. Artists with more than one area of expertise and an MFA are preferred. This residency can be extended an additional year if both the LUX and the artist agree. All residents receive free studio space (shared or private depending on medium and space available) and 24-hour access and use of equipment in the studio area to which they applied. Ceramics residents have access to regularly stocked clay and glaze materials and use of kilns in exchange for studio maintenance duties. All residents can buy materials from the LUX at cost.Residents have priority for paid, on-site teaching opportunities including community art classes for youth and adults. Residents with an MFA or BFA in painting, ceramics, or metalsmithing have the opportunity to teach college art classes for Doane College-Lincoln campus, held at the LUX. Sunny Art Center International Art Prize (UK)

Deadline: June 30, 2019. The Sunny Art Prize is an international art competition hosted by Sunny Art Centre, London. This fine art award is a global platform, giving an opportunity to emerging and established artists to showcase their talents to a wider audience. We aim to display artistic and cultural diversity to the international art scenes of London, Beijing, Guangzhou and Macau. Artist/Writers: Cover Art for Academic Medicine

Deadline: Rolling. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. Artist/Writers: Medicine and the Arts (MATA) Opportunity

Deadline: Rolling. This column is the journal’s longest-running feature. It is published on two facing pages. The left-hand page features an excerpt from literature, a poem, a photograph, etc. Literature excerpts generally run no more than 700 words and may include a very brief introduction as needed. The right-hand page presents an original commentary of about 900 words that explores the relevance of the artwork to the teaching, learning, and/or practice of medicine. Since submissions cannot be fully accepted for publication until Academic Medicine acquires permission to reprint literary excerpts or artworks (which often takes many months), authors should include all relevant information about the piece they are explicating (publisher, museum, dates, etc.) to enable staff editors to find and contact the copyright holder. The Awesome Foundation Accepting Applications for Art Projects

The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is a worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of “awesomeness in the universe.” Established in 2009, the foundation distributes $1,000 grants on a monthly basis to projects and their creators. The money is pooled from ten or more self-organizing “micro-trustees.” The chapters are autonomous and organized by the trustees around geographic areas or topics of interest. Call for Artists: Maryland Art Place Seeks Proposals for Rotating Exhibition Partnership with Baltimore’s Hotel Indigo (MD)

Deadline: rolling. Maryland Art Place (MAP), in partnership with Hotel Indigo is pleased to announce an open ‘Call to Artists’. As an extension of MAP’s annual IMPACT public art partnership projects, MAP is working with Hotel Indigo to offer rotating exhibitions in Hotel indigo’s library and Poets Modern Cocktails and Eats. Peripheral ARTeries – Biennial Contemporary Art Publication
