Call for Artists: ‘UN/Sustainable’ – Stamp Gallery Exhibition (MD)

Deadline: April 1.  In recent years there has been a resurgence of concern about sustainability as the world confronts and reacts to the ramifications of decisions, past and present. The impending environmental realities of the future give birth to revolutionary conversation and oftentimes protest. Artists sit at the forefront of these movements, using their stories to open the eyes of viewers and reflect upon their own relationships to the physical world. A lack of concern for the earth, and more widely the cultures and peoples that so heavily rely on nature, reflects larger structures of power at play and forces questions about our collective priorities. UN/Sustainable will examine these priorities through contemporary works that critically interact in bold and creative ways with the artist’s experience of the physical world and its future. The exhibition will feature a range of media and will seek to include art that asks: what is the role of sustainability in the art world? What is an artist’s responsibility to the environment in art creation? In documentation? In protest? Can art play a role in sustaining the earth or is it merely reflection on the issues?  How do culture and larger power structures affect environmental action and opinion? Are our ways of existing sustainable? For information, visit the UN/Sustainable website.

A Room of Her Own: Ann Pickett’s “The Exuberance of Life” intertwines figure and environment

By: Haven Ashley

With movement, mystery, and appetite for life, the work of painter Ann Pickett intertwines the figure with its environment in “The Exuberance of Life” in the gallery now through April 7.

Laid Back by Ann Pickett

Created by Pickett’s unique brushwork, the abstract forms that emerge from her work are vivacious and lush, evoking feminine figures in her exploration of landscapes and domestic scenes.

In Sedona, one of Pickett’s landscapes, the rocky hillside tumbles into the curved silhouette of a woman; a true meeting of figure and ground.

Sedona by Ann Pickett

Filled with zest and light, her figures create rhythmic creatures, simultaneously emerging and retreating into the background. Affectionately calling the interior scenes “roomscapes,” Pickett’s figures find the perfect balance of eccentricity. Hearth becomes hipbone; a chair becomes a cheek. In Laid Back, the settee becomes the sitter.

A gestural painter, she works with acrylics, favoring their fast-drying nature that allows her to continually layer paint. “I need freshness and spontaneity,” she remarked. “I rarely mix my colors a second time.” Once unbottled, every shade becomes a unique moment in time, from apricot to rose, to her favorite Ann’s Blue.

The Art Patron by Ann Pickett

Pickett also notes that much of her energy, encouragement, and motivation comes from her instructors and peers at The Art League school. “The classes keep me painting. It’s so inspiring. It’s a great community.”

Ann Pickett is an award-winning abstract painter based in McLean, Virginia. With a 25-year career in graphic design, Pickett began painting abstracts in 2005 and received the Shayna Heiman Simkin Award in 2015. Most recently, Pickett has been featured in Elan Magazine in March of 2018.

Art on the Vine 10×10: Ten Perfectly Paired Artworks and Wines to Sip On

Well Crafted Beverage has curated a selection of 10 hard-to-find wines (also biodynamic and organic) from small artisanal vineyards across the globe – designed to take the palate on a journey from light to bold. Event Sommelier, Tony Acampora paired each of 10 works of art at Art on the Vine, with 10 amazing pours. Read all about the wine selection and suggested artwork below:

Pinot Noir

Vessel, Ceramic, Blair Meerfeld
Stoneware Jar, Ceramic, Blair Meerfeld

The Wine: Beautiful, expressive bouquet of ripe cherry, black raspberry, crunchy currants, warm spices and chocolate, delicately framed by a touch of new oak. Ruby in color, it has a silky texture with mild tannins and bright acidity. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, with a deep core, impressive dimension and a fine-grained, savory finish. This wine deftly combines richness with elegance. Its floral aromas and flavors of red fruits just sing.

Artwork Suggestion: A most versatile wine, it pairs well with salmon, chicken, game birds, most meats, and mushroom dishes…just like this piece by ceramicist Blair Meerfeld.

Champagne

Rachel Collins - Yellow Tulip Canyon
Yellow Tulip Canyon, Rachel Collins

The Wine: Beautiful light gold. Refined, expressive nose blending fruity and brioche-like notes. A rich, full, melted style showing seductive balance and persistency. A top-flight Champagne for sophisticated pre-dinner drinks.

Artwork Suggestion: The bubbly, golden of the Champagne matches the effervescence of this floral work by artist Rachel Collins.

Sauvignon Blanc

Untitled Delna Dastur
Untitled, Delna Dastur

The Wine: This Sauvignon Blanc from Napa, California begins with a playful mingling of lemon zest and jasmine, this Sauvignon Blanc enjoys a dance of tropical fruit and lemon citrus and a bouquet of fresh spring flowers on the palate. Enjoy this wine as the warm spring days arrive and slide into warm summer nights on the patio. Stainless steel fermented then rested for 7 months in neutral French Oak.

Artwork Suggestion: The light and easy feeling of this wine is reflected in this movement and energy of this piece by Delna Dastur.

Brut Rose

Gretchen Raber - Loft Lines
Loft Lines, Gretchen Raber

The Wine: Brut Rose is a blend of Pinot Noir and Grenache. The hint of color is obtained from a brief maceration of the musk with the skins. Bright with a gorgeous glow in the glass and a silky mouthfeel. On the palate, it is fruity with notes of blackberries and strawberry cheesecake, but clean, dry and perfectly rounded. The fine bubbles lead to an elegant, crisp finish.

Artwork Suggestion: The unique elegance of this wine matches the conceptual timelessness of this diamond cuff by Gretchen Raber.

Chardonnay

Michael Heilman - Mystery Horse
Mystery Horse, Michael Heilman

The wine: Aromas of white fruit blossoms and light citrus precede flavors of Forelle pear, vanilla and a hint of ginger. Soft and complex floral notes with flavors of pear, guava, and lychee. The toasted honey-oat and buttery finish denote French Oak. Pairs nicely with buttered herb roasted lobster and Caesar salad. A lovely choice with seafood and mildly spiced Asian dishes. It is ready to drink now or enjoy after a few years of proper cellaring.

Artwork Suggestion: …Much like this striking tapestry by Michael Heilman, which can be enjoyed now…and later.

Barbera D’Asti

Joey Manlapaz - Three is a Crowd
Three is a Crowd, Joey Manlapaz

The wine: Hints of cherry and red fruits alternating with spicy and sometimes floral hints. A Barbera of excellent structure and complexity with sweet and velvety tannins.

Artwork Suggestion: The structure, and complexity of this wine is mirrored in this piece by Joey Manlapaz.

Cabernet Sauvignon (California)

Danni Dawson - William & Thom
William & Thom, Danni Dawson

The wine: This Cabernet Sauvignon has beautiful scents of rose petal, cocoa, dark cherry, leather, tobacco, vanilla, clove, anise, and raspberry that float from the dark, inky, body. The tannins are all-encompassing, along with vibrant acidity, work towards perfect balance and finesse. The long finish is marked by a touch of dark chocolate and caramel which provide a perfect balance. This is a Cabernet built for the long haul, best enjoyed after decanting or 5-15 years in the cellar.

Artwork Suggestion: This piece by Danni Dawson, reflects this wine…as well as the recipe for a perfect marriage: balance and built for the long-haul.

Tempranillo

Ted Reed - As the Valley Opens
As the Valley Opens, Ted Reed

The Wine: Get ready for an explosion of aromas with this Tempranillo from Spain. Powerful and complex.  Tasting notes of very ripe red and black fruits and spicy background of coffee, toffee and licorice. Broad, fleshy, well structured with good balance between compote ripe fruit and excellent oaks. Finishes sweet with a lot of persistence.

Artwork Suggestion: The persistence and power of this canyon scene by Ted Reed perfectly reflects this powerful and complex Tempranillo.

Cabernet Sauvignon (South Africa)

Tania Karpowitz - Landscape Head
Landscape Head, Tania Karpowitz

The Wine: Deep and opaque violet in color, the nose is all dark fruits. In your mouth, there is an incredible journey of eucalyptus, green pepper, cranberry, blackcurrant and cassis plus touches of cinnamon, violet and green pepper. This is a smooth and polished journey, livened by a gentle acidity and spice in the finish that goes on and leaves you wanting more.

Artwork Suggestion: The figure in this work by Tania Karpowitz shows a man who has also been on a journey, as he stares back at the viewer.

Priorat

Untitled, Ryan Rakhshan
Untitled, Ryan Rakhshan

The Wine: This Spanish wine is a blend of Garnacha Blanca and Macabeu, expressing the terroir of the Priorat. Full of minerality and velvety richness. A mediterranean white wine—dry, complex with full body, and, at the same time, a very well integrated acidity, making it very refreshing and pleasant. Bright straw yellow in the glass. The wine is fermented in new French oak barrels for 90 days. After, sur lie aging in stainless steel tanks for 4 months. The wine is then filtered and bottled and kept in our cellar for 10 months.

Art Suggestion: This gravity sculpture, by Ryan Rakhshan, reflects the complexity and artistry of this fine wine.

Ready to taste test these wines for yourself?

Get your tickets to Art on the Vine, Friday, March 22, 7:00–10:00 pm in the Torpedo Factory Art Center. Cheers!

Shot Clock: 5-Minute Artist Talks Return!

Here at The Art League we are surrounded by artists every day. We love when our gallery is renewed every month with a new set of beautiful artwork. However, you don’t have to work at The Art League to have access to the great exhibiting artists that show month after month in our gallery. If you’re anything like us, and have wondered why your favorite artists choose a certain medium, subject, or take on a piece…this is your chance!

Join exhibiting artists featured in the March “Open” exhibit for an exciting round of 5-Minute Artist Talks. Artists will talk about their process, the background behind their piece, and take questions from onlookers. Talks begin at 5:15 pm in the Gallery and be sure to stick around for our March Opening reception for the March Open exhibit and Ann Pickett’s “The Exuberance of Life” at 6:30 pm (there will be wine and cheese!). Want a sneak peek of who will be talking tomorrow? Scroll down and come prepared with your questions!

Happy International Women’s Day: Can you name #5WomenArtists?

March is  Women’s History Month, and TODAY is International Women’s Day! To mark the occasion, the National Museum of Women in the Arts is once again asking: Can you name five women artists?

  • 51% of U.S. visual artists are women. They earn 81 cents for every $1 by a male artist.
  • In the book Basic History of Western Art, 8% of the artists are women. Less than 1% are women of color.
  • 5% of artworks on major museum walls are by women.

Women are less likely to have gallery representation, to get solo shows, and to make the big bucks at auction. See sourcing and more statistics, in this infographic.

In 2017, we wrote about the hugely successful #5WomenArtists campaign, started by NMWA, which challenges people to share the names of five women artists they know. In 2018, we shared a round up of our favorite artful links for Women’s History Month.

Now that you’re aware, here are some ways to take action!

Celebrate International Women’s Day at National Museum of Women in the Arts

Here in the DMV, we’re lucky to have the National Museum of Women in the Arts, open 362 days a year. Go ahead and pay them a visit now; we’ll be here when you get back.

… Welcome back! The NMWA addresses a huge gap in museum collections all over the globe, which vastly under represent women.

Whether you can name 5, 50, or 100 women artists, this month’s full of opportunities to find and support women artists who are new to you. Here are some exhibits to see and events to attend:

More exhibits to see…

Ann Pickett’s “The Exuberance of Life” (Open March 9 through April 7 in The Art League Gallery Solo Room): With movement, mystery and appetite for life, the work of painter Ann Pickett intertwines the figure with its environment in “The Exuberance of Life.”

Ambreen Butt “Mark My Words” (On view December 7, 2018–April 14, 2019 at NMWA): Mark My Words reflects the multilayered aspects of mark-making in Butt’s art through her exceptional range of techniques—including drawing, stitching, staining, etching, and gluing—while also speaking to broader ideas about women making their marks on society.

Torpedo Factory Art Center (open 7 days a week), including The Art League gallery, is full of working women artists in every medium you can imagine. Jeanine Michna-Bales, On the Way to the Hicklin House Station, San Jacinto, Indiana, 2013; digital C-print, 17 x 24 1/2 inches; © Jeanine Michna-Bales

Through Darkness to Light: Photographs Along the Underground Railroad  by Jeanine Michna-Bales (at Alexandria Black History Museum, February 2–March 16): Photographer Jeanine Michna-Bales has spent more than a decade meticulously researching “fugitive” slaves and the ways they escaped to freedom. While the unnumbered routes of the Underground Railroad encompassed countless square miles, the path Michna-Bales documented encompasses roughly 2,000 miles and is based off of actual sites, cities, and places that freedom-seekers passed through during their journey.
