Deadline: July 15. Torpedo Factory Art Center is interested in purchasing original craft objects, artwork, and designs to sell in the Art Center’s Gift Shop. Selected products will be labeled in the shop as being made by the artist and, as appropriate, the name of the artist will appear on the products.This opportunity is open to all active leaseholding artists or current members of a gallery/workshop at the Art Center. 1st Annual Juried Exhibition (NY)

Deadline: June 30. Hudson Valley MOCA’s 1st Annual Juried Member Exhibition is an opportunity to showcase a variety of perspectives and practices within the contemporary visual arts. Juried by Legacy Russell, Associate Curator of Exhibitions at The Studio Museum in Harlem, this exhibition will unite a multitude of voices, both local and national, to explore our contemporary moment and the unique work created within it. 106th Annual Exhibition (NY)

Deadline: July 3. Allied Artists of America announces a call to artists for a juried art exhibition, August 29 – September 15, 2019 at the Salmagundi Club in New York, NY. Over $25,000 in cash awards including: Top award of $3,000. Juror: Elizabeth Allan. Open to all artists 18 years and older. Deadline: July 11. Woman Made Gallery in Chicago announces a call to artists for a juried art exhibition, Sept 20 – Oct 19, 2019. Juror: Kathryn Markel (https://www.markelfinearts.com/blog/92/) Principal, Markel Fine Arts. Open to artists who use paper as substrate or primary medium. Works made on or about paper may include, (but are not limited to) – painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, collage, cut paper, paper constructions, etc. All mediums on paper will be considered. All applicants should submit an artist’s statement about their body of work. 1708 Gallery’s InLight Richmond Call for Proposals (VA) 

Deadline: July 15. 1708 Gallery invites national and international artists working in all media and disciplines to submit entries for the 12th annual InLight Richmond. InLight is a public exhibition of contemporary light-based artworks— multimedia and interactive projects, video, projection, sculpture, installation, and performance. InLight 2019 will take place at Chimborazo Park in the Church Hill neighborhood of Richmond. Artists are invited to propose projects that critically engage with the social and geographic history of this site. Two key moments in the park’s history include being the location of the largest Confederate military hospital during the Civil War and following Emancipation, hosting a Freedmen’s community for formerly enslaved African-Americans. 1708 seeks artists and projects that respond to, elaborate on, and propose new ways of understanding these complex histories. Potential sites for installations and performances include pathways, sidewalks, green spaces, trees, and more. There are no interior sites available. Artists may propose a specific site for both pre-existing and site-responsive works. Please indicate if your work is site-specific on your entry form. 1708 Gallery reserves the right to make final site assignments. Call For Entries – The Shape of Memories- Loft Artists 6th Juried Exhibit (CT)

Deadline: July 15. The Loft Artists Association announces a call to artists for a juried art exhibition, August 24 – September 22 at Loft Artists Gallery in Stamford, CT. Cash Prizes. Juror: Arianne Faber Kolb. Open to all artists, 18 years and older, residing in the Tri-State area (Connecticut, New York and New Jersey). Media: drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography, digital art and mixed media. Three-dimensional work should be accompanied by a pedestal or base upon delivery of art. Call for 2020 Smithsonian Craft and Design Show (DC)

Deadline: September 7. Each April, in Washington DC, the Smithsonian Women’s Committee (SWC) welcomes 120 outstanding American craft artists and designers to participate in a five-day exhibition and sale – the renowned Smithsonian Craft+Design Show. Three expert jurors select up to 120 exhibitors from the total group of applicants, based on originality, artistic conception and quality of execution. The Show does not charge sales commissions. All proceeds from the Preview Night party, daily show admissions, and other fundraising efforts benefit the education, outreach and research programs of the Smithsonian. Academy Center of the Arts Annual National Juried Photography Exhibition (VA)

Deadline: June 28. The Academy Center of the Arts in Lynchburg, Virginia announces a call to artists for a juried photography exhibition, September 6-28, 2019. Over $3000 in Cash Awards. Juror: Michael Mergen. Open to U.S. residents, 18 years or older. Photographs must be original photographs or photographically derived work, and not done under supervision. All work submitted must be suitably prepared for installation. The curator reserves the right to deny entry if any work is deemed not suitable for display or too difficult to install. Sunny Art Center International Art Prize (UK)

Deadline: June 30.  The Sunny Art Prize is an international art competition hosted by Sunny Art Centre, London. This fine art award is a global platform, giving an opportunity to emerging and established artists to showcase their talents to a wider audience. We aim to display artistic and cultural diversity to the international art scenes of London, Beijing, Guangzhou and Macau. Sunny Art Award will promote an exchange in creativity between Western and Eastern cultures. We are looking for a variety of submissions which can range from two-dimensional works such as paintings, drawings and photographs, to three-dimensional sculptures, and ceramics. Strange Figurations (NY)

Deadline: June 30. Strange Figurations is an international, thematic group exhibition curated and hosted by the Limner Gallery. The exhibition is open to all interpretations of the concept, Strange Figurations, which would include surreal, visionary and generally all out of the ordinary figurative art. Strive: An Exhibition Highlighting American Immigration & the American Dream (VA )

Deadline: June 30. The d’Art Center in Norfolk, VA announces a call to artists for a national juried art exhibition, July 25 – August 31, 2019. Awards for 1st Place: $500, 2nd: $300, 3rd: $150. Juror: Solomon Isekeije. This exhibition highlights immigration in America and the long admired endeavor of obtaining the American Dream. This country was formed on immigrants seeking new opportunities, democracy, civil liberties, and both religious, and political freedom. The topic of immigration has been discussed in almost every news cast over the last two years and continues to be at the center of much discussion and debate in the United States. Strive will feature work that depicts various topics surrounding American immigration both throughout American history and in today’s society, spanning from those who initially came to the United States seeking the American Dream (and those who currently are in the process of doing so), all the way to refugees looking for a safe haven. Call for artists ages 60+ in DMV: Lois & Richard England Gallery (DC)

Deadline: July 1. Call for artists ages 60+, living or working within  50-mile radius of Washington, DC to exhibit at the Lois & Richard England Gallery. This may be a 2-4 artist exhibition from September 14, 2019 through January 16, 2020, therefore artists selected must have a portfolio of 24-30 pieces available (depending upon sizes) for hanging if selected.The theme is City and Urban Landscapes with a deadline of submission on July 1. Apply for FREE Retail Space for Artists 3 blocks from Torpedo Factory (VA)

Deadline: July 1. The Alexandria Economic Development Partnership’s three-year-old pop-up program, which finds temporary space for home-based businesses or micro-retailers to test a brick and mortar presence, is taking applications for its latest free pop-up space in Old Town. AEDP is working with The Seedling Collective, a new working space at 121 South Royal in Old Town, to offer up to one week of free rent to three pop-up shops during the months of July and August. Call for Proposals, 2020-2021 (FL)

Deadline: July 1. The Rosemary Duffy Larson Gallery of Broward College is currently seeking proposals for the 2020-2021 exhibition season. Group exhibitions and curatorial proposals are welcomed, as well as solo exhibition proposals. Art in Times of Anxiety, Juried Exhibition (NC)

Deadline: August 30. The University of North Carolina at Pembroke announces a call for entries for our 10th Annual International Juried Exhibition.   All interpretations of this year’s theme, “Art in Times of Anxiety” are welcome in a variety of media, subjects, and approaches. Artists are invited to submit two-dimensional, three-dimensional, installation or digital media (including video based media). Composition, technique, style, expression, and craft will be considered in the selection process. All artists who are selected by this year’s juror will be displayed in the UNCP’s Art Department Gallery from Thursday, October 04 – Friday, November 01, 2019. Awards: $600 first prize, $200 second prize, and $100 third prize. Entry and Handling Fee: The processing fee for entry is $25.00 and allows for up to 3 entries per artist. UNFINISHED BUSINESS (NC)

Deadline: September 16. UNFINISHED BUSINESS is a juried call for art open to any works in progress. We want to see what you’re working on, whether it’s just started, midway, or almost done. This exhibition will also serve as an opportunity to receive comments and critiques on your works before the finishing touches are applied. UNFINISHED BUSINESS is open to any living artist. A maximum of 2 works of any medium, per artist may be submitted. Two and three-dimensional entries will be accepted. Work must be original and completed in the last 2 years. No copies, mechanical reproductions, molds or kit work will be accepted. Visual Art Exchange reserves the right to exclude work due to size or special requirements. Dexter Jones Award: National Sculpture Society (NY)

Deadline: November 4. The Dexter Jones Award is an unrestricted prize of $5,000.  It is presented annually to a sculptor for an outstanding work of sculpture in bas-relief. For more information, and to apply visit the National Sculpture website.

King Street Gallery Call for Entry (MD)

Deadline: November 25. The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation Arts Center has a number of spaces available for mounting exhibitions that support the academic mission of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts. This open call is for our King Street Gallery, the largest exhibition space in the Cafritz Arts Center. This light filled, 1050 square foot gallery is in the main atrium of the building. Its prominent location, open design, and extremely high ceilings (30 feet+) make it a great venue for major exhibitions. While much of this gallery space is visible from the main lobby of the building, and through the windows that front onto the street, it does maintain gallery hours and is locked after hours. The gallery hours are Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.– 4 p.m. Exhibitions are generally scheduled a year in advance to complement the academic calendar. Exhibitions in the King Street Gallery are 4-5 weeks long, and emphasize two person or small group shows. Single artist applications may be paired with a complimentary artist or artists to better utilize the space. Curated proposals are encouraged. The Creativity Grant Program State of Maryland (MD)

Deadline: Rolling. The purpose of the Creativity Grant Program is to strengthen the vitality and sustainability of artists and small organizations to maintain a strong and stable arts infrastructure in the State of Maryland. The Creativity Grant also provides opportunities to serve the growing needs of relevant arts projects and collaborations within Maryland communities. Artist/Writers: Cover Art for Academic Medicine

Deadline: Rolling. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. Artist/Writers: Medicine and the Arts (MATA) Opportunity

Deadline: Rolling. This column is the journal’s longest-running feature. It is published on two facing pages. The left-hand page features an excerpt from literature, a poem, a photograph, etc. Literature excerpts generally run no more than 700 words and may include a very brief introduction as needed. The right-hand page presents an original commentary of about 900 words that explores the relevance of the artwork to the teaching, learning, and/or practice of medicine. Since submissions cannot be fully accepted for publication until Academic Medicine acquires permission to reprint literary excerpts or artworks (which often takes many months), authors should include all relevant information about the piece they are explicating (publisher, museum, dates, etc.) to enable staff editors to find and contact the copyright holder. The Awesome Foundation Accepting Applications for Art Projects

Deadline: Open. The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is a worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of “awesomeness in the universe.” Established in 2009, the foundation distributes $1,000 grants on a monthly basis to projects and their creators. The money is pooled from ten or more self-organizing “micro-trustees.” The chapters are autonomous and organized by the trustees around geographic areas or topics of interest. Call for Artists: Maryland Art Place Seeks Proposals for Rotating Exhibition Partnership with Baltimore’s Hotel Indigo (MD)

Deadline: rolling. Maryland Art Place (MAP), in partnership with Hotel Indigo is pleased to announce an open ‘Call to Artists’. As an extension of MAP’s annual IMPACT public art partnership projects, MAP is working with Hotel Indigo to offer rotating exhibitions in Hotel indigo’s library and Poets Modern Cocktails and Eats. This opportunity is available to visual artists living or working in Maryland. Maryland Art Place will curate four exhibitions a year based on submissions entered through a rolling basis. Peripheral ARTeries – Biennial Contemporary Art Publication

Deadline: Rolling. Peripheral ARTeries is looking for artists to be featured in the new special Biennial Edition of their art publication, that comes to its 10th edition. Exhibit at Hotel Indigo (VA)

Artist Statement Workshop: Q&A with Julia Kwon and Fanna Gebreyesus

The League is pleased to welcome Julia Kwon, Artist in Residence at the NARS Foundation in Brooklyn, NY and Fanna Gebreyesus of the Glenstone Museum in Potomac, MD TONIGHT, June 27 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at our Artist Statement Writing Workshop (see the Eventbrite below to RSVP)!

Both Kwon and Gebreyesus are upcoming Art League jurors, and have participated in jurying for our Solo Show program. Not able to attend? We caught up withKwon and Gebreyesus and asked them to share a few quick and easy updates to your artist statements:

What is one thing that you wish artists would remove from their artist’s statement? What is one thing you wish they’d include?

FG: “Repetition; strengthening a point or thought is vastly different from simply repeating it in different ways. One thing I personally love reading in an artist’s statement is how the artist feels their work operates in the world at this specific time.”

JK: “I wish artists would remove generic statements that could be applied to most artists and artworks. Artists can instead focus on discussing what specifically makes their work interesting.”

In your time in the art world, what is one artist statement that really sticks out to you? What was it about this statement that made it stand out in particular?

FG: “I recall reading a statement where the artist spent virtually no time talking about themselves but instead about their community and the various people who helped inform the work. At the time, I wasn’t sure if that made for a successful statement per se—but it has certainly stayed with me even after all this time.”

JK: “Successful artist statements discuss the visual, technical, and conceptual aspects of the work in a straightforward and concise manner that illuminate the artist’s intent and intensify the impact of the artwork.”

What is a good resource you’d point a newer artist to for creating an artist’s statement for the first time?

FG: “A second pair of eyes! Never underestimate the power of a peer review.”

JK: “Writing an artist statement can be daunting, but it will start to become easier with some study and practice. Newer artists can get familiar with how to write about art by studying how others discuss and construct meaning through art: they can attend artist talks and read artist statements, interviews, exhibition labels, press releases, and reviews. Artists will especially benefit from writing about their own work while they are still planning for a project and developing the reasoning behind their work so that both the work and the artist statement are well-considered.”

About Fanna and Julia:

Fanna Gebreyesus is a Curatorial Associate at Glenstone Museum, where she collaborates on artist publications, exhibition planning, and public programming. She holds an MA in art history from American University, and a dual-BA in English and Art History. She has worked on projects for The Phillips Collection, the Freer | Sackler Museum, and National Geographic Magazine.

Julia Kwon is an interdisciplinary artist currently based in NY and the DC area. She was born in the U.S. and has earned her M.F.A. at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts/Tufts University and B.A. in Studio Art at Georgetown University. She has had numerous solo exhibitions and won various awards such as the School of the Museum of Fine Arts/Tufts University’s Traveling Fellowship as well as the artist residency at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, Vermont Studio Center, Montgomery College, Gallery 263, and Textile Arts Center. ​Kwon is currently an Artist in Residence at NARS Foundation in Brooklyn, NY and will have a solo exhibition at Torpedo Factory Art Center’s Target Gallery in Alexandria, VA.

Take it to the street: Lee Hassig’s photographs capture Colonial Williamsburg’s Duke of Glocester Street

Street photography, anonymous and obscured, dates to the earliest uses of personal and handheld cameras. One can find black and white photographs of Victorian faces resembling the confused and somewhat defensive expressions snapped candidly on our Canons and iPhones.

Lee Hassig enters this conversation anonymously photographing inhabitants of Duke of Gloucester (“DoG”) Street in Historic Colonial Williamsburg. On “DoG” street history meets modernity with a bang, as tourists are framed against storied architecture. Hassig refers to himself as a “walk-about” photographer citing inspiration from Walker Evans, Robert Frank, and Gary Winogrand. Also reflected in his work are the influences of the formerly anonymous Vivian Maier and of early Edwardian street photographer, Edward Linley Sambourne, who documented the fashions and everyday routines of their times.

Answering whether street photography is an invasion of privacy, Hassig says

This work, as well as that of my predecessors and contemporaries—is more akin to people-watching than to surveillance. The images permit a viewer to disregard his or her parents’ admonition that to stare is to be impolite. But as Walker Evans, also an occasional artist in the street-photography space, once advised: ‘Stare. It is the way to educate your eye, and more.’

Tomorrow we are hosting ceramics artist Ryan Rakhshan as he discusses his innovative glazing and firing techniques, focusing on the ways he pushes the boundaries of his medium. Below, we talked with Ryan Rakhshan about his process:

Ryan Rakhshan’s work is inspired by the intricacies of human relationships. He explores the human experience using ceramic vessels and objects which utilize both the natural fluidity and the rigidity of clay.

Ryan’s work is inspired by the duplicity of human experience. By that, he means that the ceramic vessels and objects he creates, utilize the natural fluidity and complex rigidity of clay. Ryan tinkers with the technical and chemical aspects of ceramics, focusing on the aesthetic and utilitarian aspects of the ceramics field.

“I’ve been interested in putting unconventional objects in the kiln ever since high school, when I would try to sneak paper clips and brass tacks into hollow sculptures, only to break them open later to see what my “experiments” had done.

    After a decade of education focused towards making functional work, I decided to let loose and make a few sculptures. Thinking about glaze as a separate entity from the ceramic sculptures came shortly after. Glaze on functional work has a very specific purpose; it makes things sanitary and impervious to water or bacteria. It’s a coating or a skin rather than a separate element of the art. Glaze on sculptural work can be anything; it doesn’t even need to be attached to the work.

    Although other people have used sculptural glazes similarly to how I’m using them, there’s no real blueprint or recipe for how to make these glazes. Usually glaze recipes are closely guarded secrets. All of my previous experience with functional glazes and strange experiments with foreign objects in the kiln came together to help me design and use my current body of sculptural glazes. And although there are a few dozen other artists using glazes similarly, I’m willing to bet that we all came to our process individually, resulting in the huge variety of objects currently being made in this style.” – Ryan Rakhshan

“Practice, practice, practice. The technical skill to make a really good mug took me about 10 years to get down. I have a huge mug collection at home, mostly made by other artists, and it wasn’t until a few years ago that I began to consistently reach for one of my own mugs rather than someone else’s. Up until that point, my work simply wasn’t as nice as the other mugs in my collection. The same goes for glazing and glaze mixing. Each time I design a new glaze, it usually takes me about 40 hours of very focused and intense testing. Just this past week I’ve spent at least 20 hours making over 100 different test glazes (I’m currently pursuing a functional cone 6 floating blue glaze without any cobalt). Without putting in those hours, there’s no way I would be able to make the work that I make today.  It’s an ongoing process, and you’re never really done getting better, so you may as well enjoy the journey.” – Ryan Rakhshan

The Alexandria Economic Development Partnership’s three-year-old pop-up program, which finds temporary space for home-based businesses or micro-retailers to test a brick and mortar presence, is taking applications for its latest free pop-up space in Old Town. AEDP is working with The Seedling Collective, a new working space at 121 South Royal in Old Town, to offer up to one week of free rent to three pop-up shops during the months of July and August. Deadline: June 30.  The Sunny Art Prize is an international art competition hosted by Sunny Art Centre, London. This fine art award is a global platform, giving an opportunity to emerging and established artists to showcase their talents to a wider audience. Sunny Art Award will promote an exchange in creativity between Western and Eastern cultures. The University of North Carolina at Pembroke announces a call for entries for our 10th Annual International Juried Exhibition.   All interpretations of this year’s theme, “Art in Times of Anxiety” are welcome in a variety of media, subjects, and approaches. Artists are invited to submit two-dimensional, three-dimensional, installation or digital media (including video based media). Composition, technique, style, expression, and craft will be considered in the selection process. All artists who are selected by this year’s juror will be displayed in the UNCP’s Art Department Gallery from Thursday, October 04 – Friday, November 01, 2019. Awards: $600 first prize, $200 second prize, and $100 third prize. Entry and Handling Fee: The processing fee for entry is $25.00 and allows for up to 3 entries per artist. UNFINISHED BUSINESS (NC)

Deadline: September 16. UNFINISHED BUSINESS is a juried call for art open to any works in progress. We want to see what you’re working on, whether it’s just started, midway, or almost done. This exhibition will also serve as an opportunity to receive comments and critiques on your works before the finishing touches are applied. UNFINISHED BUSINESS is open to any living artist. A maximum of 2 works of any medium, per artist may be submitted. Two and three-dimensional entries will be accepted. Work must be original and completed in the last 2 years. No copies, mechanical reproductions, molds or kit work will be accepted. Visual Art Exchange reserves the right to exclude work due to size or special requirements. Dexter Jones Award: National Sculpture Society (NY)

Deadline: November 4. The Dexter Jones Award is an unrestricted prize of $5,000.  It is presented annually to a sculptor for an outstanding work of sculpture in bas-relief. For more information, and to apply visit the National Sculpture website.

King Street Gallery Call for Entry (MD)

Deadline: November 25. The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation Arts Center has a number of spaces available for mounting exhibitions that support the academic mission of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts. This open call is for our King Street Gallery, the largest exhibition space in the Cafritz Arts Center. This light filled, 1050 square foot gallery is in the main atrium of the building. Its prominent location, open design, and extremely high ceilings (30 feet+) make it a great venue for major exhibitions. While much of this gallery space is visible from the main lobby of the building, and through the windows that front onto the street, it does maintain gallery hours and is locked after hours. The gallery hours are Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.– 4 p.m. Exhibitions are generally scheduled a year in advance to complement the academic calendar. Exhibitions in the King Street Gallery are 4-5 weeks long, and emphasize two person or small group shows. Single artist applications may be paired with a complimentary artist or artists to better utilize the space. Curated proposals are encouraged. The Creativity Grant Program State of Maryland (MD)

Deadline: Rolling. The purpose of the Creativity Grant Program is to strengthen the vitality and sustainability of artists and small organizations to maintain a strong and stable arts infrastructure in the State of Maryland. The Creativity Grant also provides opportunities to serve the growing needs of relevant arts projects and collaborations within Maryland communities. Artist/Writers: Cover Art for Academic Medicine

Deadline: Rolling. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. Artist/Writers: Medicine and the Arts (MATA) Opportunity

Deadline: Rolling. This column is the journal’s longest-running feature. It is published on two facing pages. The left-hand page features an excerpt from literature, a poem, a photograph, etc. Literature excerpts generally run no more than 700 words and may include a very brief introduction as needed. The right-hand page presents an original commentary of about 900 words that explores the relevance of the artwork to the teaching, learning, and/or practice of medicine. Since submissions cannot be fully accepted for publication until Academic Medicine acquires permission to reprint literary excerpts or artworks (which often takes many months), authors should include all relevant information about the piece they are explicating (publisher, museum, dates, etc.) to enable staff editors to find and contact the copyright holder. The Awesome Foundation Accepting Applications for Art Projects

Deadline: Open. The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is a worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of “awesomeness in the universe.” Established in 2009, the foundation distributes $1,000 grants on a monthly basis to projects and their creators. The money is pooled from ten or more self-organizing “micro-trustees.” The chapters are autonomous and organized by the trustees around geographic areas or topics of interest. Call for Artists: Maryland Art Place Seeks Proposals for Rotating Exhibition Partnership with Baltimore’s Hotel Indigo (MD)

Deadline: rolling. Maryland Art Place (MAP), in partnership with Hotel Indigo is pleased to announce an open ‘Call to Artists’. As an extension of MAP’s annual IMPACT public art partnership projects, MAP is working with Hotel Indigo to offer rotating exhibitions in Hotel indigo’s library and Poets Modern Cocktails and Eats. Summer classes are already here…but don’t worry! Although the term has started, many classes don’t begin until after the July 4th holiday!There’s still time to make room for creativity this summer! How will you spend your summer….

For Little Artists

Art camp — for ages five and up — provides children a wonderful introduction to visual art. This summer, we’re offering 101 different camps over nine weeks!

In our regular art camp, each day brings a new project that may include drawing, painting, printmaking, or sculpture. Our specialty camps, like Drawing Camp or Painting Camp, focus on immersion in one particular medium.

  • Art camps run from June 17 to August 12, Monday through Friday, and have a varied curriculum from week to week.
  • You can register for half-day camps, full-day camps, or full-day camps plus an extension.
  • This year you can also register for before-care for your children

If you’re brand-new to art classes — or if you just need a refresher — we most often recommend Basic Drawing as a great first class…if you’re looking for a little inspiration, this article is helpful. If drawing not your speed, there are classes for beginners and those getting back into the swing of things in every medium, including ceramics, sculpture, fiber art, painting, photography, and printmaking.

6 Bottles of Beer on the Blog: Art on Tap 2019

The sixth annual Art on Tap has come and gone, and with art lovers, beer lovers, and foodies! Six breweries, and six restaurants interpreted their pairings based on artwork from the Art on Tap mini-exhibit.

At the end of the night, everybody voted on their favorite art-beer-food pairings. The Judges’ Choice Award went to Rocket Frog Brewery and Meggrolls restaurant, and the Popular Vote Award was won by Alexandria’s own Port City Brewery and Chadwicks!

All You Need Is Love but (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction: Art Inspired By the Songs (NY)

Deadline: June 17. The debate over who is the better band — The Beatles or The Rolling Stones — has reigned for decades, but both bands have influenced artists equally. Now is your chance to pick a side (or show them both some love) and pay homage to your favorite band. The work in this exhibition will contain art inspired by a song of either the Beatles or the Rolling Stones. The exhibit will be both a virtual exhibition with submissions exhibited at www.emergegalleryny.com with a selection of work displayed at our physical space. One side of the gallery will exhibit work inspired by the Beatles and the other side will exhibit work inspired by the Rolling Stones. They will meet in the middle. This fine art award is a global platform, giving an opportunity to emerging and established artists to showcase their talents to a wider audience. King Street Gallery Call for Entry (MD)

Deadline: November 25. The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation Arts Center has a number of spaces available for mounting exhibitions that support the academic mission of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts. This open call is for our King Street Gallery, the largest exhibition space in the Cafritz Arts Center. This light filled, 1050 square foot gallery is in the main atrium of the building. Its prominent location, open design, and extremely high ceilings (30 feet+) make it a great venue for major exhibitions. While much of this gallery space is visible from the main lobby of the building, and through the windows that front onto the street, it does maintain gallery hours and is locked after hours. The gallery hours are Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.– 4 p.m. Exhibitions are generally scheduled a year in advance to complement the academic calendar. Exhibitions in the King Street Gallery are 4-5 weeks long, and emphasize two person or small group shows. Single artist applications may be paired with a complimentary artist or artists to better utilize the space. Curated proposals are encouraged. Deadline: Rolling. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. Artist/Writers: Medicine and the Arts (MATA) Opportunity

Deadline: Rolling. This column is the journal’s longest-running feature. It is published on two facing pages. The left-hand page features an excerpt from literature, a poem, a photograph, etc. Literature excerpts generally run no more than 700 words and may include a very brief introduction as needed. The right-hand page presents an original commentary of about 900 words that explores the relevance of the artwork to the teaching, learning, and/or practice of medicine. Since submissions cannot be fully accepted for publication until Academic Medicine acquires permission to reprint literary excerpts or artworks (which often takes many months), authors should include all relevant information about the piece they are explicating (publisher, museum, dates, etc.) to enable staff editors to find and contact the copyright holder. The Awesome Foundation Accepting Applications for Art Projects

Deadline: Open. The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is a worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of “awesomeness in the universe.” Established in 2009, the foundation distributes $1,000 grants on a monthly basis to projects and their creators. The money is pooled from ten or more self-organizing “micro-trustees.” The chapters are autonomous and organized by the trustees around geographic areas or topics of interest. Call for Artists: Maryland Art Place Seeks Proposals for Rotating Exhibition Partnership with Baltimore’s Hotel Indigo (MD)

Wild Clay: Q&A with Potters Hitomi & Takuro Shibata

Hitomi and Takuro Shibata learned pottery making as professional studio potters in Shigaraki, one of the oldest and largest pottery villages in Japan. Now based in Seagrove, North Carolina, the Shibata’s join The Art League gallery the evening of Friday, June 14 to speak about their experiences in Shigaraki and Seagrove, inspirations and influences, wild clays in North Carolina and their wood firing methods. The Shibata’s small pottery studio is named “Touya” which means “pottery house” in Japanese. Studio Touya focuses no making simple and functional pottery by using local wild clay and wood firing techniques.

Where do you get your inspiration for creating your work from? Nature, people, experiences, other…?

I think I get inspirations and ideas from my experiences that I had with friends, families, great foods, at special places and occasions. Nature and function are also important elements for making pots. We use natural materials, fire by our wood kiln, and use handmade pots everyday.  

 
How did you learn the method that you and Takuro use to create and fire your work?

I learned pottery making at my school, Okayama University in Japan in 1990-1996. It was great to learn from my professor who made very traditional functional table wares everyday at my undergrad and grad programs. But I learned more practical lessons through my pottery jobs in Shigaraki that is one of the biggest pottery villages in Japan, as a young potter. Making living from pottery job was not easy, you must work very hard from early morning to late night with very small stipends. I learned a lot (good and bad), and it made me think of how I want to live as a potter. Earning good skills is important, and having clear goals, learning from good artists and craft people,  and keeping working hard are also important, too. 

 
What is one thing you’ve learned from being a working professional artists that you’d like to share with those who are aspiring professionals?
I wrote an article for Ceramics Monthly in 2017 and it has an advise for young potters. I would like to paste here.
“It takes time, money and lots of energy to set up your own pottery studio and business. You need skill, tenacity, intellectual curiosity and an old fashioned work ethic. You need to read, you need to travel. You may need to go to school, work as an apprentice, complete a residency or take on a part time job. Success doesn’t happen overnight.  It is challenging, but there are many opportunities in many places for a young potter. Our potter’s world is full of welcoming, generous people.”

Where do you get your inspiration for creating your work from? Nature, people, experiences, other…?

I am getting my inspiration from beautiful nature, and people and also experiences. But I especially inspire by clays and materials as a part of nature. It is so fascinating for me to see how they change by fire.

How did you learn the method that you and Hitomi use to create and fire your work?

I learn my basic pottery making skills through my apprenticeship in Shigaraki. And after that, I leant from Hitomi and the people who I met and work together. And I try and made mistakes, those experience made my current method for making my work.

What is one thing you’ve learned from being a working professional artists that you’d like to share with those who are aspiring professionals?

Believe yourself and keep trying. 

About the Shibata’s process:

Most of their work is made of North Carolina local clays, including those new clays that they test and mix up with wild local clay. The Shibata’s built their Anagama kiln in 2009. To make the ash glazes, they collect wood ash from wood kilns and wood stoves, which are traditional in Japan. The studio uses iron oxide for brush decollation. Iron Oxide is the only oxide the Shibata’s use for pottery, and they aim to use simple and natural and non-toxic materials to create their work. The Anagama firing takes three days to load, and five day to fire. Salt chamber firing itself takes one day to load, and one to two days to fire with a small amount of rock salt.

The Art League School’s Summer Art Camp is currently searching for two (2) more interns for Summer 2019!  Interns act as classroom aides to over thirty working artists during the course of the summer. They are also responsible for basic camp functions such as assistance with class setups, class coordination, and helping to evaluate the effectiveness of classes offered. Interns are trained and directly supervised by the camp coordinator. Campers range from ages 5 to 11, and art projects are done in a variety of fine art media. Ethical Metalsmith Students (EM Students) is examining what it means to be an artist in the 21st century by curating the most innovative jewelry and metalsmithing work made within the past 2 years. Nude: Exploring the Uncovered Human Form in Current Art – OH

Deadline: June 9. The Cincinnati based non-profit arts organization and gallery, Manifest, invites visual artists and designers to submit works that in some way represent the uncovered human form for consideration in Manifest’s eleventh annual Nude, an international competitive exhibit, August 16 – September 13, 2019. Through all the permutations art has experienced across history, work of the body persists. We use the human nude to master skill, understand ourselves, and push social and psychological buttons for the sake of expression (sensual, delicate, political, aggressive, and so on). Solo Series 2019-20: Abington Art Center (PA)

Deadline: June 10. Solo Series offers artists the opportunity to show a body of work in an individual gallery. Each season, AAC’s exhibition program features national and regional artists in our gallery spaces, as well as related programs such as lectures, public forums, and workshops designed to involve audiences in the experience. Applicants will also be considered for an exhibition in our Community Arts Gallery, which highlights artists whose work aims to create conversation and engagement around local cultural and historical concerns. 22nd Annual National Small Works Competition & Exhibition (DC)

Deadline: Extended to June 15. National call for exhibit at Washington Printmakers Gallery in Georgetown. Grand Prize: 2020 Solo Exhibition. Juror: JD Talasek.  Hand-pulled prints, screen prints, digital prints, photographs, and three-dimensional work (including artist books) with print components completed within the past two years. All You Need Is Love but (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction: Art Inspired By the Songs (NY)

Deadline: June 17. The debate over who is the better band — The Beatles or The Rolling Stones — has reigned for decades, but both bands have influenced artists equally. Now is your chance to pick a side (or show them both some love) and pay homage to your favorite band. The work in this exhibition will contain art inspired by a song of either the Beatles or the Rolling Stones. The exhibit will be both a virtual exhibition with submissions exhibited at www.emergegalleryny.com with a selection of work displayed at our physical space. One side of the gallery will exhibit work inspired by the Beatles and the other side will exhibit work inspired by the Rolling Stones. They will meet in the middle. This exhibition will include art of various styles and mediums — works on paper, fiber, paintings, photography, small sculpture are all acceptable. Academy Center of the Arts Annual National Juried Photography Exhibition – VA

Deadline: June 28. The Academy Center of the Arts in Lynchburg, Virginia announces a call to artists for a juried photography exhibition, September 6-28, 2019. Over $3000 in Cash Awards. Juror: Michael Mergen. Open to U.S. residents, 18 years or older. Photographs must be original photographs or photographically derived work, and not done under supervision. Sunny Art Center International Art Prize (UK)

Deadline: June 30.  The Sunny Art Prize is an international art competition hosted by Sunny Art Centre, London. This fine art award is a global platform, giving an opportunity to emerging and established artists to showcase their talents to a wider audience. We aim to display artistic and cultural diversity to the international art scenes of London, Beijing, Guangzhou and Macau. Sunny Art Award will promote an exchange in creativity between Western and Eastern cultures. McLean Project for the Arts (MPA) seeks work for MPAartfest 2019, a one-day juried fine art and craft show and sale featuring the work of more than 35 local and regional visual artists. King Street Gallery Call for Entry (MD)

Deadline: November 25. The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation Arts Center has a number of spaces available for mounting exhibitions that support the academic mission of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts. This open call is for our King Street Gallery, the largest exhibition space in the Cafritz Arts Center. This light filled, 1050 square foot gallery is in the main atrium of the building. Its prominent location, open design, and extremely high ceilings (30 feet+) make it a great venue for major exhibitions. While much of this gallery space is visible from the main lobby of the building, and through the windows that front onto the street, it does maintain gallery hours and is locked after hours. The gallery hours are Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.– 4 p.m. Exhibitions are generally scheduled a year in advance to complement the academic calendar. Exhibitions in the King Street Gallery are 4-5 weeks long, and emphasize two person or small group shows. Single artist applications may be paired with a complimentary artist or artists to better utilize the space. Curated proposals are encouraged. Artist/Writers: Cover Art for Academic Medicine

Deadline: Rolling. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. Artist/Writers: Medicine and the Arts (MATA) Opportunity

Deadline: Rolling. This column is the journal’s longest-running feature. It is published on two facing pages. The left-hand page features an excerpt from literature, a poem, a photograph, etc. Literature excerpts generally run no more than 700 words and may include a very brief introduction as needed. The right-hand page presents an original commentary of about 900 words that explores the relevance of the artwork to the teaching, learning, and/or practice of medicine. Since submissions cannot be fully accepted for publication until Academic Medicine acquires permission to reprint literary excerpts or artworks (which often takes many months), authors should include all relevant information about the piece they are explicating (publisher, museum, dates, etc.) to enable staff editors to find and contact the copyright holder. The Awesome Foundation Accepting Applications for Art Projects

The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is a worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of “awesomeness in the universe.” Established in 2009, the foundation distributes $1,000 grants on a monthly basis to projects and their creators. The money is pooled from ten or more self-organizing “micro-trustees.” The chapters are autonomous and organized by the trustees around geographic areas or topics of interest. Call for Artists: Maryland Art Place Seeks Proposals for Rotating Exhibition Partnership with Baltimore’s Hotel Indigo (MD)
