Call for Entry, September 2022 Open Juried Exhibit, The Art League — Alexandria, VA

Deadline: August 15   Artists may enter works made within the past five years. Open exhibits are not limited by theme, medium, process, or content. The Art League Award for Best-in-Show receives League credit for $1000 useable in the store, gallery, or school. Artist must be a current exhibiting artist member of The Art League gallery. Open Call for Sacatar Residency Fellowships — Itparica, Brazil

Deadline: August 1   Sacatar is accepting applications for residency Fellowships in 2023 at the Instituto Sacatar, located on the island of Itaparica across the bay from Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Call for Public Art at Gateway West Development — Hyattsville, MD

Deadline: August 4   The Hyattsville Community Development Corporation is accepting artist proposals for an iconic, permanent public artwork for the entrance to Stanley Martin’s new Gateway West Development. Individual artists or artist teams from the greater metropolitan area or within 250 miles are eligible to respond. Locally established or emerging sculptors, woodworkers, metal-workers, and artists of any durable media are most welcomed. DC Public Library Open Call, UNCENSORED 2022 — DC

Deadline: August 10   This year the DC Public Library’s UNCENSORED installation will be a large-scale banner raising  awareness of topics explored in Clint Smith’s bestselling nonfiction book How the Word Is  Passed: A Reckoning with the History of Slavery Across America. Submitted works may consider how censorship is another way of erasing memory or history  around issues that are uncomfortable for many Americans to consider. Call for Muralist, Loudoun County Public Schools — Loudoun County, VA

Deadline: September 2   Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS), with the Loudoun County School Board-appointed Douglass High School Commemorative Committee (DHSCC), seeks submissions for the design, creation, and placement of a mural on the outside wall of the gym adjacent to the basketball court at the Historic Douglass High School. Renovation of the school campus is ongoing, and the identified area for the mural will be in a highly visible location, adjacent to an outdoor basketball court and historic themed community playground nearby. Calls for Entry, Portraits by the People, Anacostia Community Museum — DC

Deadline: September 15   In celebration of the 55th anniversary of the Smithsonian’s Anacostia Community Museum, the museum is asking residents of Washington, D.C., to submit images of themselves and their communities to a new initiative, Portraits by the People. Select portrait submissions will be shown on the museum’s social media sites and as building projections during the museum’s 55th anniversary celebrations Sept. 15 from 6 to 8:30 p.m.  Submit portraits here.

 

Call for Artists, Fanciful Picnic Tables at Sandy Spring Museum — Sandy Spring, MD

Deadline: September 15   Serving as a gathering place for the community, Sandy Spring Museum is installing a series of picnic groves with fanciful picnic tables, most of which will be designed by Maryland artists. We are seeking proposals from artists who would like to be selected to design and build a table. Hillyer Call for Exhibition Proposals: 2023-2024

Deadline: September 16    Hillyer is accepting proposals for exhibitions to take place between January and December 2023. Through this competitive selection process, accepted artists are awarded a month-long exhibition in one of our three gallery spaces. To learn more, click here.

 

2023 Open Call for a Solo Exhibition at Target Gallery — Alexandria, VA

Torpedo Factory Art Center invites artists living in the DC-metropolitan region to submit a proposal for a solo exhibition in Target Gallery, the Art Center’s contemporary exhibition space. The artist with the chosen proposal will receive an exhibition in Target Gallery from April 22 – July 16, 2023. The artist will receive a $3,000 stipend for the opportunity to cover artists expenses. Call for Artists, 2022 Scenes in the City Plein Air Festival — Falls Church, VA

Deadline: September 24.  Falls Church Arts will hold its 12th annual Scenes in the City Plein Air Festival September 9-24. Artists will paint outdoors in Falls Church City, VA, from September 9 through 23. The Plein Air Festival competition and a Quick Draw event will be held on Saturday, September 24. OAS Art Museum of the Americas Call for Trans, Non-binary, and Gender-diverse Artist — DC

Deadline: October  31   OAS Art Museum of the Americas (AMA) of the OAS Secretariat for Hemispheric Affairs (SHA), announces an open call to artists of the region to submit works addressing gender identity and expression, in order to stage an exhibition at the AMA. This program aims to strengthen and increase the visibility of the social, economic, cultural, civil, and political rights of trans, non-binary, and gender-diverse people in OAS Member States. Winning entry will receive a prize of US $5,000. Winning artwork will be accessioned into the permanent collection of the OAS AMA | Art Museum of the Americas. For more information, click here.

Montgomery County Planning Department Spring Photo Contest

New Deadline: July 31   The Fairland and Briggs Chaney Master Plan team invites aspiring and professional artists to submit a photo that captures the true essence of the local community. Submitted photos may be included in the actual master plan document, for marketing, and in promotions leading up to final adoption of the master plan by the Planning Board and Montgomery County Council. Call for Entries, Quilts=Art=Quilts —Auburn, NY

Deadline: August 27    Quilts=Art=Quilts is an international juried quilt exhibition at the Schweinfurth Art Center in Auburn, New York.  The Art Center has been a longstanding proponent of quilts as a visual arts medium and has been presenting quilts in a gallery setting since 1981. Call for Art, Out of Hand: Tradition Meets Tech — Solomons, MD

Deadline: August 28    Out of Hand is dedicated to exploring digital-assisted methods of expanding traditional practices. The exhibition focuses on how artworks can utilize the process of tuning, refining, or altering subjects, their contexts, or materials through the lens of digital aids. Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center invites emerging and established artists to submit original artworks to the ‘Out of Hand: Tradition Meets Tech’ exhibition. All media will be considered, including painting, printmaking, sculpture, performance, glass, fiber, digital, photography, installation, mixed media, and new genres. Deadline: September 1   Although steeped in traditional culture, the Chesapeake long has been a place of change and evolution, and its history driven by response to that change. The Changing Chesapeake seeks submissions from students and adults alike, responding to changes they observe in the landscape and life around them. This is an open call for inclusion in an exhibition centered on community response to changes in the Chesapeake Bay region. Artists may be of any age, with no residency requirements. Prince George’s Arts and Humanities Council (PGAHC) is featuring county artists at its newest art space Arts’tination at National Harbor, the premier arts and entertainment destination in our regions Located at 162 Waterfront Street, National Harbor, MD. Pyramid Atlantic offers year-round workshops in printmaking, papermaking, book arts, and hybrids thereof. Busboys and Poets is looking for submissions from Maryland and Virginia artists as it expands to new locations in both areas. Alterwork Studios Online Residency

This residency was designed to give emerging contemporary artists an online platform to create new work and explore their practice. Accepting Artwork for Curatorial Review by AIWA

The Alper Initiative for Washington Art features five exhibitions per year in the newly constructed first floor space in the American University Museum. We accept submissions, on a rolling basis,  from Washington artists of all ages and backgrounds, and working in diverse media. The Hamilton Arts Collective (HAC) and the Hamilton Gallery seek applications from artists for month-long Guest Artist exhibitions at Hamilton Gallery located at 5502 Harford Road, Baltimore, MD. The selected guest artists will be invited to exhibit a selection of their current work in Gallery I of the Hamilton Gallery. Howard County Arts Council Quarterly Call For Artists – Ellicott City, MD

The Howard County Arts Council gallery program was established to enhance the public’s appreciation of the visual arts, provide a venue to exhibit the work of local, regional, and national artists in a professional space, and provide leadership in the arts by presenting a broad spectrum of arts in all media from both emerging and established artists. Artists, ages 18 and older, working in all media and styles including time-based and installation artists, are encouraged to apply either individually or as a group. The Creativity Grant Program State of Maryland (MD)

Deadline: Rolling. The purpose of the Creativity Grant Program is to strengthen the vitality and sustainability of artists and small organizations to maintain a strong and stable arts infrastructure in the State of Maryland. The Creativity Grant also provides opportunities to serve the growing needs of relevant arts projects and collaborations within Maryland communities. Artist/Writers: Cover Art for Academic Medicine

Deadline: Rolling. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. The Awesome Foundation Accepting Applications for Art Projects

Deadline: Open. The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is a worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of “awesomeness in the universe.” Established in 2009, the foundation distributes $1,000 grants on a monthly basis to projects and their creators. The money is pooled from ten or more self-organizing “micro-trustees.” The chapters are autonomous and organized by the trustees around geographic areas or topics of interest. Peripheral ARTeries – Biennial Contemporary Art Publication

Deadline: Rolling. Peripheral ARTeries is looking for artists to be featured in the new special Biennial Edition of their art publication, that comes to its 10th edition. This opportunity is great for both established and early career artists who need a boost to their artist portfolio. The 10th edition will once again explore and show current trends and tendencies in Contemporary Art: Peripheral ARTeries cultivates a spirit of openness through a unique collaborative and participatory approach.Each artist may submit a maximum of three works or projects made in any technique: painting, drawing, video art, experimental cinema, fine art photography, experimental media, mixed media, installations, public art, performance. Exhibit at Hotel Indigo (VA)

Artists works will displayed in the hotel’s gallery (220 S Union St, Old Town Alexandria) for a six-month period. Two-dimensional, framed works only. Artists will install the work using the hotel’s mounting hardware. Labels will be provided by the hotel. All sales handled by artist, no commission. Summer Art Camp Interns Wanted at The Art League — Alexandria, VA

Deadline: Until Filled  The Art League has internships available during the summer. This is a great opportunity for high school graduates or college students to meet their collegiate internship requirements, or provide a valuable experience and references. Interns for those who work more than 200 hours will be given a stipend. They may also be approved to teach paid sessions towards the end of the summer if they meet the appropriate criteria. Call for Entries, Washington Sculptors Group and the Luther W. Brady Art Gallery, The George Washington University — DC

Deadline: July 24   The Luther W. Brady Art Gallery at the George Washington University is undertaking the repair and installation of the large-scale sculpture Ghost Dance by the artist Robert Stackhouse. Selected from the Corcoran Collection, this work will be renewed by the artist and his partner, Carol Mickett, in situ and it will form the jumping off point for an exhibition of sculptural works that celebrate similar themes of renewal, rebirth, and sustainability explored in this work.  Artists are invited to submit existing or new sculptures and installations that fit the themes of renewal, reuse, repair, sustainability, recycling/upcycling, impermanence/change, environmental awareness, and other related themes. Works will be judged on how well they fit the theme and how suitable they are for the available space, as well as how all selected works come together for a cohesive exhibition. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. The Awesome Foundation Accepting Applications for Art Projects

The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is a worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of “awesomeness in the universe.” Established in 2009, the foundation distributes $1,000 grants on a monthly basis to projects and their creators. Pyramid Atlantic Workshop Proposals – Hyattsville, MD

Pyramid Atlantic offers year-round workshops in printmaking, papermaking, book arts, and hybrids thereof. We offer multi-week, daytime, evening, and weekend intensives for adults in our fully equipped studios. 2020 has been dedicated to the Year of the Woman in Maryland. Do you have an inspiring story about vital contributions of women-identifying people who are artists, arts administrators, or cultural workers? Call For Artists, Busboys and Poets

Busboys and Poets is looking for submissions from Maryland and Virginia artists as it expands to new locations in both areas. Submissions can include drawings, painting, photography, sculpture, mixed media, assemblage, fiber, quilts, etc. Art images reflecting life in the city, family, portraits, whimsy, abstraction, social uplift and life experiences within diverse cultures are encouraged for submission. Alterwork Studios Online Residency

This residency was designed to give emerging contemporary artists an online platform to create new work and explore their practice. Accepting Artwork for Curatorial Review by AIWA

The Alper Initiative for Washington Art features five exhibitions per year in the newly constructed first floor space in the American University Museum. We accept submissions, on a rolling basis,  from Washington artists of all ages and backgrounds, and working in diverse media. Call For Entry Hamilton Arts Collective Guest Artist Exhibition – Baltimore, MD

The Hamilton Arts Collective (HAC) and the Hamilton Gallery seek applications from artists for month-long Guest Artist exhibitions at Hamilton Gallery located at 5502 Harford Road, Baltimore, MD. The selected guest artists will be invited to exhibit a selection of their current work in Gallery I of the Hamilton Gallery. The Guest Artist exhibition is featured in Hamilton Gallery communications and will be promoted by the HAC and Hamilton Gallery. Howard County Arts Council Quarterly Call For Artists – Ellicott City, MD

The Howard County Arts Council gallery program was established to enhance the public’s appreciation of the visual arts, provide a venue to exhibit the work of local, regional, and national artists in a professional space, and provide leadership in the arts by presenting a broad spectrum of arts in all media from both emerging and established artists. Artists, ages 18 and older, working in all media and styles including time-based and installation artists, are encouraged to apply either individually or as a group. The Creativity Grant Program State of Maryland (MD)

The purpose of the Creativity Grant Program is to strengthen the vitality and sustainability of artists and small organizations to maintain a strong and stable arts infrastructure in the State of Maryland. The Creativity Grant also provides opportunities to serve the growing needs of relevant arts projects and collaborations within Maryland communities. Artist/Writers: Cover Art for Academic Medicine

Deadline: Rolling. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. The Awesome Foundation Accepting Applications for Art Projects

Deadline: Open. The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is a worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of “awesomeness in the universe.” Established in 2009, the foundation distributes $1,000 grants on a monthly basis to projects and their creators. The money is pooled from ten or more self-organizing “micro-trustees.” The chapters are autonomous and organized by the trustees around geographic areas or topics of interest. Peripheral ARTeries – Biennial Contemporary Art Publication

Deadline: Rolling. Peripheral ARTeries is looking for artists to be featured in the new special Biennial Edition of their art publication, that comes to its 10th edition. This opportunity is great for both established and early career artists who need a boost to their artist portfolio. The 10th edition will once again explore and show current trends and tendencies in Contemporary Art: Peripheral ARTeries cultivates a spirit of openness through a unique collaborative and participatory approach.Each artist may submit a maximum of three works or projects made in any technique: painting, drawing, video art, experimental cinema, fine art photography, experimental media, mixed media, installations, public art, performance. Exhibit at Hotel Indigo (VA)

Artists works will displayed in the hotel’s gallery (220 S Union St, Old Town Alexandria) for a six-month period. Two-dimensional, framed works only. Artists will install the work using the hotel’s mounting hardware. Labels will be provided by the hotel. All sales handled by artist, no commission. Summer Art Camp Interns Wanted at The Art League — Alexandria, VA

Deadline: Until Filled  The Art League has internships available during the summer. This is a great opportunity for high school graduates or college students to meet their collegiate internship requirements, or provide a valuable experience and references. Interns for those who work more than 200 hours will be given a stipend. They may also be approved to teach paid sessions towards the end of the summer if they meet the appropriate criteria.
