Jill Brantley’s work “Then” won the Art League’s Best in Show award for the July 2023 Open Exhibit. For this article, I asked the artist questions about her processes, story, and inspirations for her work.
This piece, titled “Then” depicts a colorful living room, complete with a coffee table, chair, ceiling fan, and couch. Little objects including a flamingo, telephone, a weathered flag, newspaper, and picture frame ornament the living room, creating a convincingly homelike feeling. Coming through the door in a red dress and matching hat, a figure enters the cozy room with a shopping bag. All of these patterns and details each carry a special importance from the artist’s life “from the plastic cushion covers that my grandmother put on her sofa and chairs, the oh-so 50’s and 60’s shag rug, the blonde wood furniture and kidney shaped coffee table that was in my parent’s living room.” Some of the design even comes from the artist’s own personal life, with “the original curtain fabric that hung on my parent’s living room windows.” The attention to the memory of personal details shows strongly in this work, and was an important part in the creation of it. Including complementing oranges and blues and soft recognizable forms, Brantley creates a balanced composition that moves your eye throughout the piece and back again. Her use of collage gives the piece an atmospheric perspective, completing the hazy feeling of a memory.

Brantley describes the inspiration for this work, recalling the many visits to her grandmother’s house when she was younger: “She would dress up when she went shopping and I couldn’t wait to see the purchases she returned with that were in lovely boxes from the stores that she had visited. This painting is an ode to a different era in time.” Discussing her process, Brantley begins by taking inspiration from photographs or magazines, and then personalizing the work using other materials: “I painted in various items such as the background, the couch, chair and rug, after which I began adding collage. As I am creating this type of painting, a narrative usually develops.” Brantley included details based on specific memories of her grandmother, uncle, and parents, which create the story inside this piece. The use of collage helps to propel the narrative of memory within her mind. In creating more representational assemblage artwork, Brantley realized that the role of found images was of paramount importance in her creative process: “Collage was essential in depicting childhood memories for me.”
Collage has a special role in the process of creating based on memory, because of the act of finding, cutting up, and reassembling media. Remembering and representing memory can be difficult, so the aid of found media is integral to the act of remembrance. Inspired by collagists like Romare Bearden or Henri Matisse, Brantley hopes to create works that continue a legacy of storytelling. Recently, Brantley has started experimenting with abstraction by using inks, but finds herself still incorporating reused material and images within her work: “I have come to realize that collage is an integral part of my creative process. I can’t seem to get away from it nor do I really want to.”

Into the Wilderness

Kim Richards’ solo exhibit, Into the Wilderness, presents a body of work rich in biblical and allegorical references. Painted in oil and acrylic, her work focuses on the sense of hope and encouragement that defies the feelings of fear, hurt, and discontent experienced throughout the “wilderness journey” of life. Richards hopes her exhibit will “strike a spiritual chord of God’s unconditional love with her viewers.” Into the Wilderness is on view through August 6.

The Kreeger Museum and Hamiltonian Artists present Doing The Work, featuring Kyrae Dawaun, Cecilia Kim, Ara Koh, Samera Paz, and Matthew Russo. In this group exhibition that includes photos, sculpture, drawings, and video, “The Work” is both personal and collective, theoretical and tangible. Rather than focusing on end results, each piece is evocative of progression, calling attention to the patience, play, and serendipity that occurs within periods of growth and development. The OAS AMA | Art Museum of the Americas and the FLA-Fundacion Luz Austral, with the support of the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM) Sobre una mujer (About a Woman), an exhibition of contemporary photography of the Americas. It features works by 32 photographers throughout Latin America, the U.S., and Canada, and coincides with the 95th anniversary of the CIM. One of America’s greatest modern painters, Philip Guston (1913–1980) bridged the personal and the political, the abstract and the figurative, and the humorous and the tragic in paintings of lively touch and memorable impact. A major retrospective of the artist, Philip Guston Now at the National Gallery of Art, presents of the full scope of the artist’s 50-year career. It is on view in National Gallery’s East Building through August 27; 4th Street and Constitution Avenue NW, Washington, D.C.

We’re particularly keen to recruit new hires for our sculpture, stained glass, and watercolor departments. Accepting Artwork for Curatorial Review by AIWA
The Alper Initiative for Washington Art features five exhibitions per year in the newly constructed first floor space in the American University Museum. The Howard County Arts Council gallery program was established to enhance the public’s appreciation of the visual arts, provide a venue to exhibit the work of local, regional, and national artists in a professional space, and provide leadership in the arts by presenting a broad spectrum of arts in all media from both emerging and established artists. The Creativity Grant Program State of Maryland (MD)

Artist/Writers: Cover Art for Academic Medicine
Deadline: Rolling. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. The Awesome Foundation Accepting Applications for Art Projects

The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is a worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of “awesomeness in the universe.” Established in 2009, the foundation distributes $1,000 grants on a monthly basis to projects and their creators. The money is pooled from ten or more self-organizing “micro-trustees.” The chapters are autonomous and organized by the trustees around geographic areas or topics of interest. Sunlight on King Street by Samuel C. Miller; Acrylic
Diverse artworks by member artists are the feature of Open Exhibits at The Art League. There are 115 pieces—painting, drawing, photography, mixed media, sculpture, and more—on view in this month’s show. It was juried by illustrator Sarah Mari Shaboyan, and is on view through August 6.
Into the Wilderness
Safe Passage Through the Wilderness by Kim A. Richards; Acrylic on canvas
Kim Richards’ solo exhibit, Into the Wilderness, presents a body of work rich in biblical and allegorical references. Painted in oil and acrylic, her work focuses on the sense of hope and encouragement that defies the feelings of fear, hurt, and discontent experienced throughout the “wilderness journey” of life. Richards hopes her exhibit will “strike a spiritual chord of God’s unconditional love with her viewers.” Into the Wilderness is on view through August 6.

Alexander D’Agostino: A Shrine to the Forgotten
Alexander D’Agostino: A Shrine to the Forgotten at Target Gallery
Torpedo Factory Art Center presents the Target Gallery solo exhibition recipient, Alexander D’Agostino with A Shrine to the Forgotten. D’Agostino’s visual and performance works often become requiems for those witch-hunted and accused for disrupting the “moral fabric” of society, who’s stories are often packed away in some forgotten storage facility of collective memory. In this exhibition the artist invites the viewer to imagine the discovery of missing pages of a sixteenth century book of spells, along with other documents and objects found in the Torpedo Factory when it was vacant after being used as a storage facility for the FBI and Smithsonian Institute. This site specific installation in the Target Gallery consists of large textile prints, artist books, and sculptural works that explore hidden and erased stories, witch-hunts, book-bans, and “don’t say gay” bills that will tie the Torpedo Factories’ unique history with Alexander’s practice of engaging spaces with queer history, myth-making, and ritual. Look Here Rendering – Courtesy Reddymade and the National Building Museum
The National Building Museum presents its seventh Summer Block Party installation: Look Here by Suchi Reddy of the New York-based Reddymade Architecture and Design. The prismatic installation, with its constellation of reflective fractals and oversized mirrored elements resembling whimsical folded paper fortune-teller toys, fills the Museum’s colossal Great Hall while engaging, delighting, and even challenging visitors.It is on view through September 5; 401 F Street NW, Washington, D.C.
Deadline: July 14 Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts in Action Education Grant funds teaching artists and nonprofit organizations with an arts education focus. Call to Artists, VisArts’ biannual F.E.A.S.T. Grant — Rockville, MD
Deadline: August 3 VisArts’ biannual F.E.A.S.T. (Funding Emerging Art with Sustainable Tactics) is a bridge between artists and the community. F.E.A.S.T. uses community-driven financial support to democratically fund projects that use art and creative thinking to impact the community. Funding for the project grant comes from the donations of attendees, who listen to and review a series of project proposals, and converse with the artists and thinkers behind each idea. This year’s F.E.A.S.T. is focused on the concept of REMEDIATION, as a practice and site of remembrance. Artist/Writers: Cover Art for Academic Medicine
Deadline: Rolling. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. Moonrise on a Lake by Laura Hopkins; Oil
For our annual LandscapeExhibit we invited League artists to submit works that capture a sense of place. Stop by to soak in the diverse and interesting mix of scapes—pastoral scenes, urban vistas, and maritime views. This year’s exhibit comprises 100 artworks, including acrylic and oil paintings, printmaking, ink and pencil drawings, glass sculpture, tile mosaic, quilt-making, mixed media, and photography. It was juried by Frederick Mershimer, a New York-based artist specializing in mezzotint printmaking who celebrates the experience of the city in his works. The Landscape Exhibit is on view through July 9.

Rise Up by George Elliott
Dimensions showcases three dimensional work from a variety of media including ceramic, stone, wood, glass, metal, mixed media and beyond. This year’s exhibit features 18 works by League member artists. It was juried by noted wood sculptor Jim Perry, and is on view through July 9.

Into the Light by Kim A. Richards; Acrylic
Kim A. Richards’ solo exhibit, Into the Wilderness, presents a body of work rich in biblical and allegorical references. Painted in oil and acrylic, her work focuses on the sense of hope and encouragement that defies the feelings of fear, hurt, and discontent experienced throughout the “wilderness journey” of life. Richards hopes her exhibit will “strike a spiritual chord of God’s unconditional love with her viewers.”

Affirmations by Gabrielle Moore
Artists & Makers Studios and Black Artists of DC presents Everyday Every Day, a group exhibition featuring works by Ralston Cyrus, Selena “Noir” Jackson, Gabrielle Moore, and Reshada Pullen-Jireh. Their artworks celebrate everyday Black humanity through portraiture. Meet the artists at the opening reception Friday, July 7, from 5 – 8 pm. Smithsonian Folklife Festival

Experience the cultural landscape of the Ozarks during the final three days of this year’s Folklife Festival. Most activities take place on the National Mall between 12th and 14th streets. Daytime programs by musicians, dancers, cooks, artisans, storytellers, and others will run from 11 a.m. through 5:30 p.m. On select evenings, special concerts will begin at 6 p.m. Admission to the festival is free and open to the public.

Deadline: August 3 VisArts’ biannual F.E.A.S.T. (Funding Emerging Art with Sustainable Tactics) is a bridge between artists and the community. F.E.A.S.T. uses community-driven financial support to democratically fund projects that use art and creative thinking to impact the community. Artist/Writers: Cover Art for Academic Medicine
Deadline: Rolling. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing.
