Let There Be Light will be on view January 7 through February 2, 2009 at The Art League Gallery, along with Yoshimi Matsukata’s solo show, A Hosta Story.

Opening Reception Tonight

Join us this evening, Thursday, December 8, 6:30-8pm for the opening reception of our all-member media show, Let There Be Light, as well as the January solo artist show, Yoshimi Matsukata, A Hosta Story.

Hostas, often used as the border or backdrop in a garden, are the subject of Yoshimi Matsukata’s solo artist exhibit of watercolor paintings at The Art League Gallery, A Hosta Story. “It may be the scientist in me that keeps going back to organic subjects.” Continually drawn back to nature, Matsukata enjoys visually portraying something previously unnoticed in her environment. The rhythm created by the abstract shapes formed by light and shadow inspired Matsukata to create this series. “I find the colors, the curls, the deep veins in the foliage irresistible. I am particularly inspired when the sun creates a pattern of shadows underneath the foliage. I am most intrigued with hostas in the spring, when the foliage is fresh. I enjoy the sense of a new beginning.” The use of watercolor is an integral part of Matsukata’s work. “I like to work wet on wet, drop different colors on top of each other, and watch the pigments mix on paper. This often produces a granulated effect and a natural transition of color on the paper.” Matsukata’s works have been exhibited throughout the Washington area, nationally, and internationally. She studied painting at The Art League School, the Corcoran School of Art, and the Washington Studio School. She holds a BA from Harvard University in Biochemistry. She feels that her work represents a combination of her two passions, visual art and science.

CALL TO ARTISTS
LET THERE BE LIGHT
Juror – Cynthia Connolly
January 7, 2009 – February 2, 2009

Light can be gentle, dangerous, dreamlike, bare, living, dead, misty, clear, hot, dark, violet, springlike, falling, straight, sensual, limited, poisonous, calm and soft. – Sven Nykvist

Work a great deal with evening effects, a lamp, a candle, etc. The tantalizing thing is not always to who the source of light, but the effect of light. – Edgar Degas

Light gives art a sense of time and place. We need light to see. The more light there is, the more vibrant a work becomes. Light is critical to the weather, time of day, gives a good painting it’s meaning, gives it life and vitality. A good still life has to have light to give it a sense of reality. The more light there is the more color there is. Light makes the color vibrant. Artists should create simultaneous contrast by using complementary colors because our eye always sees the opposite. – Art League instructor Steve Fleming

Artists can be inspired by the works of Turner, Edward Hopper, Rembrandt, the Dutch Painters, and our own Art League instructors, Rob Liberace, Danni Dawson and Ted Reed. The works of all our instructors can be viewed on The Art League website at www.theartleague.org under “Classes” and “Faculty”.

Upcoming Calls to Artists at The Art League

This Monday, November 24, we will be accepting holiday ornaments in the gallery from 10 am-6pm. This year’s theme is Celebrate Alexandria! It is not necessary to solely produce images of Alexandria, but we do find that Old Town scenes tend to sell out quickly.

Ornaments will be displayed on an artificial tree in the gallery from November 26 – December 31. Gallery staff will replace ornaments as they sell. Unsold ornaments not picked up by January 2 will be donated to charity. There is no entry fee and no limit on the number of entries. Artists will receive a 75% commission on ornament sales.

The following Monday, December 1 starts receiving for the December All-Media Membership Show from 6:30 pm – 8:30pm. You may also drop off work between 10 am and 12 noon on Tuesday, December 2.

Since we have recently received a number of pieces submitted for jurying which have not met The Art League’s framing requirements, we will have copies of the new framing requirements available in the gallery by December 1.

If you have any questions about either show, please call the gallery at 703-683-1780 or e-mail Barbara at [email protected].
