Expressive Watercolor: The Creative Process

Step into a more intuitive, alive way of painting—where watercolor becomes less about control and more about discovery. In this class, we explore the creative process behind expressive watercolor, focusing on how to capture the fleeting essence of a subject rather than its exact details. You’ll learn to trust your first impressions—those immediate responses to light, color, and movement—and translate them into confident, gestural marks on paper.

Learn to achieve the correct values and color relationships right from the start. Through guided exercises and demonstrations. Rather than overworking your paintings, you’ll learn when to stop—allowing freshness and spontaneity to remain.

This class is ideal for artists who want to loosen up, paint with more confidence, and develop a personal voice in watercolor. Whether you’re working from landscape, figure, or imagination, these principles will help you move beyond imitation and into expression.

Model fees are extra of the situation arises.

Supplies are required for this course.  As a service to our students, most supply lists are kept on hand in the Art League Supply Store. The existence of this store gives students the opportunity to obtain supplies in advance and come to class prepared to work. The Art League Supply Store is in studio 217 at the Torpedo Factory Art Center, just around the corner from the Art League School Registration Office.

They are open 7 days a week for your convenience. Due to our large enrollment, we are unable to mail, fax, or read supply lists over the phone. It is the responsibility of the student to acquire their own materials.

Hours: Sunday through Thursday from 11:00am to 5:00pm

Friday and Saturday from 10:00am to 5:00pm
