Guest Instructor Kathleen Calhoun Sets the Tone

Kathleen Calhoun is an expert at combining art history into her teaching style and into her art. Ever a student and an instructor, she’s been immersed in the visual arts for more than four decades.

Calhoun’s upcoming workshop at The Art League combines techniques pulled from 17th and 19th century painters as well as modern art and digital imagery. Setting The Tone While Pushing Your Limits” guides more experienced students through techniques to elevate their artwork and to compose eye catching pieces.

We asked Calhoun to talk about her background, artistic process, and her eagerly awaited workshop.

Shimmering River by Kathleen Calhoun
Shimmering River by Kathleen Calhoun

How long have you been teaching?

Unbelievably, I am now entering my fourth decade as a visual arts educator and student – I feel like I cannot be one without the other! In fact I am just wrapping up a month in NYC studying figure drawing and painting at the Art Student League as well as classical approaches at the New York Academy of Art. Currently, I am teaching at RVA’s version of The Art League, The Visual Arts Center.

What excites you about teaching for The Art League?

Ever since my first tour in 1986, through two fantastic Susan Abbott workshops last year, I have always been enamored with the mission, energy and diversity of the creative community of the [The] Art League. So when long time [TAL] supporter, Susan Prytherch took my workshop at Nimrod Hall Summer Program and suggested I should teach it here, I leapt at the opportunity!

How would you describe your artistic process?

I call it my two-legged expedition.

First, I start with a well-planned approach regarding most facets of the creative process (materials, process and subject matter); even mapping out color and tone while writing up process lists!

Then for the second “leg,” I select just one of those aspects listed above, toss out all the planning and completely open it up to creative wild abandon. This might include painting blind folded or using materials found only in my kitchen or a hardware store. The best part is, I change these parameters in-between series of work. It makes for what I call (and my website can attest to) an “eclectic aesthetic.” Often successful discoveries from the second part work their way into the first part.

Like walking with two legs, I believe this rhythmic pattern of planning and experimentation keeps my expressive and teaching journey in vibrant motion.

What do you aim for students to take away from this workshop?

Three main things:

  1. A greater appreciation for tone as foundational design element, as well as how tone is the building block for color composition.
  2. Strategies for using tone to grab the viewer’s attention from across the room and then nuance it to reward that viewer for coming in to take a closer look.
  3. Several free little goodies to use in their own practices later (whether in the studio or en plein air) to help identify proper tonal relationships in their work and references.

And as a bonus

4. How to segue this new tonal knowledge and apply it to their own particular color palette. Other workshop artists have told me this was the best part of the workshop they were able to clarify and fine-tune their palette, not only in color and tone, but also temperature.

As one 85 year old student put it:

‘Wow, I feel like I am now really looking and seeing for the first time in my life.’– Former Virginia Governor Douglas L. Wilder

Your class description says that students will pull from “17th century as well as 21st century techniques” can you give us an example of two techniques, one from each century that you will employ in your workshop?

From the way back when… [we will explore] several hybrids of our own self created tonal scales, and viewfinders. Also if time and student interest dictate, we can jump into the 19th century with the Van Gogh grid which I find much more helpful than the simple square one.

From today… analyzing digital imagery, learning some digital photography basics and manipulating filters to help train the eye to accurately read the tonal value and masses in a composition, as well as successfully jumping into subjective color while holding onto accurate tone.

But do not worry, we will also be using stuff from in those middle centuries to create notans [Japanese for “light dark balance] from historical works, rendering from our own staged lighted objects, and discovering how to use tone to improve on a few of those blah works we all create.

Finally, we will slowly reintroduce color and then if time allows bump it up to a full spectrum of experimenting with subject colors. One promise with this workshop — participants will not be bored!

Can you tell us a little bit more about who should take this class, or what type of student might best benefit from the workshop?

I would recommend this workshop for the serious hobbyist painter, illustrator maybe even the professional who is looking to expand their understanding of greyscale as it relates to light and form and learn some new observational strategies.

Self Portrait at 50 by Kathleen Calhoun
Self Portrait at 50 by Kathleen Calhoun

Just for fun: You often use mixed media paints…but if you had to pick one medium that you like the most, what would it be and why?

Ugh, the dreaded “favorite medium” question!  It is like “Judgement-of-Paris” and “Who-Is-Your-Favorite-Child” rolled together. But it is a thoughtful question, since it can encapsulate the artist’s process and goals, so here it goes. Taking into account the many aspects of a painting-medium-brush release, portability, toxicity, transparency/opacity, pigment load, clean up, and versatility, I would have to say that it would be the paint that got me through grad school at VCU – acrylic. It can create a thick, impasto texture, or stay open like oil or wash, or block and resist like watercolor. Of course this now makes me want to run and go use my oils, watercolors, or inks….

Explain in one sentence what it means to you to set a tone and push your limits as an artist.

Having a dedicated routine (setting the tone) while consciously planning to let go of other parts of their studio practice will allow the artist to discover new aspects to creating (pushing their limits).

Sign-up for “Setting the Tone While Pushing Your Limits!”

Guy Jones’ “Drawing Energy” Stares Back

Guy Jones, a frequent highlight in The Art League gallery and fixture at the Torpedo Factory Art Center, is our July solo artist. His exhibit “Drawing Energy: The Logic of Madness” features pieces that defy the mold and structure of typical two-dimensional art and instead inhabit hollowed out turtle shells, holiday-ornament shaped bulbs, and even bones.

Jones evokes an organic and natural aesthetic with his work, often choosing to focus on the macabre or the mythical side of nature. Heconcentrates on drawing the energy or spirit of things, evoking new life on the object of which it is drawn” he says. “When you look at it,” he adds, “it looks at you.

Guardian by Guy Jones

Jones also draws heavily from his time working with a Cherokee elder shaman and exploring his Cherokee background. “Working in this way reflects the 20 years of ceremony and 10 years of study with my elder and shamanic teacher,” he says. “While walking in the healing way you learn that all things are alive with energy or spirit.” Cherokee imagery can be seen in Sky Vault, a piece that features crows and wafting dandelion seeds flying together, a reference to the Cherokee Indian belief that crows carry a departed soul to the afterlife known to the Cherokee as “Sky Vault.”

While Jones often incorporates natural elements including turtle shells, sand dollars, jaw bones, and skulls, his work generally stays free of color as he prefers to work in pen and ink. “After exploring many mediums,” says Jones, “I have always come back to pen and ink and the line.”

Jones describes this exhibit and his work as a “journey.” “Some are childlike,” he remarks, “while others leave a sense of uneasiness. But they are all gentle. My work is intended to be healing, so when you look into them they pull you in and you see the logic in the madness. The peaceful side of chaos… when you understand these things, you can look beyond the shadows and not be afraid. In this way, I believe my work is healing.”

If you’d like to hear more about “Drawn In: The Logic of Madness” from Jones himself and meet our new gallery director, Ali Wunder, sign up for our free event on July 26, “Drawn In: Taking a Closer Look at The Art League’s Solo Exhibit.”

Join us for the opening reception, Thursday, July 12, 6:30–8:00 pm.

Meet Ali Wunder, Our New Gallery Director

Ali Wunder, The Art League's new Gallery DIrector
Ali Wunder, The Art League’s new Gallery DIrector

We are delighted to have Ali Wunder, who some will remember as our former Community Outreach and Camps Coordinator, join us as our new Gallery Director.

As a practicing artist married to a practicing artist, Ali has a particular affection for and kinship with exhibiting artists. She earned her BA in Studio Art from Messiah College and a Masters in Art Education from George Mason University. In addition to previously working at The Art League, she has held teaching positions in Fairfax County Public Schools in both primary and high school programs.

Ali, her husband Stephen, and their two very active toddlers recently moved back to Northern Virginia after several years in Queens, NY. She’s excited to be back as part of The Art League community and looks forward to greeting all of you and the new exhibit year in the gallery!

We sat down with Ali and asked her some questions about art, The Art League, and moving back to DC.

What is your earliest memory/interaction with art?

My aunt was an artist. As a child, I would go over to her house and she would give me “art lessons.” We would create and experiment, and she would buy me new supplies to play with. It was great.

I continued studying art through high school and was a studio art major in college with a concentration in mixed media. I liked to do everything, so focusing on “mixed media” was good way to combine it all.

What was the first work of art that really spoke to you?

The first work of art that really spoke to me was Eugene Delacroix’s painting Lady Macbeth Sleepwalking. When I was in middle school, my aunt took me to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and they happened to have a Delacroix exhibit. It’s a tiny painting, and it is so eerie. There is something about the look on her face and the use of so much black that really affected me. I begged for the exhibit catalog and I still like to go back and look at it.

Which artists, dead or alive, do you admire most?

Nick Cave is my all time favorite artist. Kara Walker, known for her cut-paper silhouettes depicting historical narratives, is another artist I greatly admire. While I love her silhouettes, I’m really blown away by the depth of her drawings. I recently took a drawing class [in NYC] and have been interested in studying drawings by the old masters, like Degas.

What made you want to come back to The Art League?

In a lot of ways, I don’t feel like I ever really left! The Art League has always been home. I love that The Art League is truly an intersection of art and community – two things I’m very passionate about. I’m excited to be back at The Art League and to have the opportunity to serve our artists, viewers, and community in the gallery.

How do you think your background as an art educator will influence your role in the gallery?

I’m already thinking of ways to integrate more educational components into what we do in the gallery. I would like to do programs for both viewers and members that invite them into a conversation with the work in our gallery.

For example, later this month we’re having our first event centered on the monthly solo artist exhibit. Drawn In: Taking a Look at The Art League’s Solo Artist Exhibit, taking place on Thursday, July 26 at 6:00 pm, is an art-viewing and making Happy Hour. In this free, hands-on event, participants are invited to take a closer look at work created by our monthly Solo Artist (Guy Jones in July). After a critical viewing exercise, participants will engage in an in-depth discussion of the work, as well as the artist’s process and intent. A responsive art making session will follow. Wine and light refreshments will be served.

What did you miss most about DC?

Surprisingly, a lot of restaurants! Stephen and I are excited to patronize many of our old favorites. I also really missed the ability to easily run outside. Trying to run in NYC is stressful!

What will you miss most about NYC?

We’ll definitely miss the access to Manhattan and all it has to offer. The energy of New York is unlike anything or anywhere else.

What Art League class would you like to take?

I just finished a drawing class and am eager to take more. I would love to take Lisa Semerad’s Portrait Drawing class and Rob Liberace’s Figure Drawing class.

How do you take your coffee?

With cream, no sugar. At the moment, Stephen and I are really loving Swing’s Coffee in Del Ray.

What’s your favorite color?

Green!

How a 38-Layer Silkscreen is Made

Silkscreens by Nancy McIntyre
Three prints from Nancy McIntyre’s “Rhythms of Time” exhibit in 2016.

The Art League Blog is taking a trip down memory lane and reposting some of our most popular art resources! Please enjoy this post from the vault, originally published May 6, 2016.

When you realize these are silkscreens — and not paintings — part of you wishes you could grab the paper and peel the image apart, to see each layer that builds to the final print. Right?

If it were physically possible, it would be a lot of work. Not as much work as making it, of course: each layer of transparent ink is printed separately using a block-out stencil, a silk screen, and a squeegee. And in Nancy McIntyre’s 2016 Art League exhibit, “Rhythms of Time,” the silkscreens varied from 13 all the way to 133 layers.

How is a silkscreen print made?

As you can imagine, it requires a lot of planning. While you can’t peel apart the layers, the next best thing is looking at the printer’s proofs, made during the long printing process as a record of some of the different stencils and colors used.

It all starts with a drawing …

Lotus printer's proofs and final imageWe also posted an animation on Instagram using the printer’s proofs.

Lotus was printed in an edition of 50, which means that there are 50 final prints. The first layer was printed onto all 50 pieces of paper first, then the stencil was removed from the screen and the second was painted on. Because the screen is reused and the stencil is destroyed, these printer’s proofs are kept as a record by the artist along with notes on what colors she used.

Where to learn more

The artist featured in this post, Nancy McIntyre, is also an instructor at The Art League. To see the classes and workshops she teaches in silkscreen, browse our catalog.

You can also see her demonstrate a simple block-out stencil in this video from our YouTube channel:
