Tabletop: Exploring Food & Function  (VA)

NEW Deadline: May 23. This exhibit showcases the artistry of functional wares associated with the table and food. Saturation (MD)

Deadline: May 31. DISTRICT Arts is pleased to announce “SATURATION,” an exhibition exploring relationships between color, intensity and the way that purity impacts our visual experiences. Saturation in the context of muted colors? Sure. Saturation impacted by glazing over white? Why not? Inspiration? How about Elizabeth Osborne or Christopher St. Leger? Coined in the South (NC)

Deadline: June 1. The Young Affiliates, in collaboration with The Mint Museum, will host their fourth annual art show, “Coined in the South”, at the museum’s uptown location, October 11, 2019 – February 16, 2020 in Charlotte, NC. $15,000 in awards ($10,000 Jurors’ Award; $5,000 YAM Member Favorite). Call for Proposals, 2020-2021 (FL)

Deadline: July 1. The Rosemary Duffy Larson Gallery of Broward College is currently seeking proposals for the 2020-2021 exhibition season. Group exhibitions and curatorial proposals are welcomed, as well as solo exhibition proposals. Please submit the following materials to the email address below: 1) Resume or CV (include artist website address if available). 2) Detailed proposal of the exhibition. 3) Artist statement. 4) Artwork samples, using the following specifications: a) 15-20 digital images (JPEG) – 72 dpi, 1024 x 768 pixel maximum. b) Up to 5 minutes of time-based work with a description of no more than one page in digital format contextualizing the work. 5) Image list (including title, medium, dimensions or duration, and date). 6) Indicate if you are interested in being included in a group exhibition if you are not chosen for a solo exhibition. 440 Gallery’s Annual Theme Show – Light (NY)

Deadline: May 17. 440 Gallery in Brooklyn, NY announces a call to artists for a juried art exhibition, June 26 – July 26, 2019. Curator’s Choice Award. Jurors: Lauren Hirshfield and Kat Ryals, Co-Directors of Paradice Palase in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Open to U.S. resident artists at least 18 years old. All 2-D work must be suitably framed, wired and ready for hanging. Works on paper must be framed under plexiglass or glass. Canvases must be wired for hanging. All 3-D work must be able to hang securely on the wall, sit on a shelf, pedestal or the floor. Deadline: May 17. The Juried Competition is open internationally to artists 18 and older. FJORD Gallery 6th Annual Open Call (PA)

Deadline: May 19. FJORD Gallery is pleased to announce our 2019 Open Call! Artists are invited to submit their work for consideration in this group exhibition, to run July 6 – August 1, 2019. Applicants will be notified of acceptance by approximately two weeks after the submission deadline. Artists working in all mediums are encouraged to apply. The exhibition will be curated by Fjord members; there is no specified theme. Deadline: May 19. The d’Art Center in Norfolk, VA announces a call to artists for an upcoming exhibition, June 15 – July 13, 2019. Awards for 1st: $500, 2nd: $300, 3rd: $150. Juror: Clay McGlamory. Sheets is a national juried exhibition that features paper arts. This exhibition is open to all 2D, 3D, fine art, and fine paper crafts that may also incorporate any additional medium, as long as the finished piece is composed of at least 60% in paper elements (this may include, but is not limited to book arts, collage, sculpture, assemblage, and 2D mixed media). Deadline: May 24. 1708 Gallery welcomes all artists to submit exhibition proposals for the year 2020-2021. 1708 Gallery strongly encourages proposals for new or developing projects and bodies of work. Crossing Boundaries: Dayton Society of Artists (OH)

Deadline: May 31. Crossing Boundaries celebrates the connections and discoveries that are made when we step outside of ourselves and broaden our understanding of the other. Different backgrounds, religions, cultures, abilities, and locations can divide, but in the end, we are all bound by the same humanity. Crossing Boundaries will correspond with the DSA’s hosting of an artist-in-residence from Monrovia, Liberia, Dayton’s sister city. All proceeds from applications to the show will go towards sustaining the residency program and providing art supplies to Monrovian artists. Frame & Frequency is an ongoing International Video Art Screening Series presented by VisArts that highlights artists whose new media, experimental film, and video works explore contemporary visual culture, and presents an intimate panorama of the variety and breadth of video art in artistic practice today. So Fresh + So Clean Metalsmithing Exhibit

Deadline: June 8. Ethical Metalsmith Students (EM Students) is examining what it means to be an artist in the 21st century by curating the most innovative jewelry and metalsmithing work made within the past 2 years. Applicants will be considered for the Annual Emerging Artist Award. We understand a completely sustainable practice is an ever-evolving goal. However, the first step is becoming aware of the ways our work impacts environmental and human health. It adds an important layer to the creative decision making of artists. Through the lens of sustainability EM Students challenges you to investigate your studio, processes, methods, and personal goals. Nude: Exploring the Uncovered Human Form in Current Art – OH

Deadline: June 9. The Cincinnati based non-profit arts organization and gallery, Manifest, invites visual artists and designers to submit works that in some way represent the uncovered human form for consideration in Manifest’s eleventh annual Nude, an international competitive exhibit, August 16 – September 13, 2019. Through all the permutations art has experienced across history, work of the body persists. We use the human nude to master skill, understand ourselves, and push social and psychological buttons for the sake of expression (sensual, delicate, political, aggressive, and so on). Sunny Art Center International Art Prize (UK)

Deadline: June 30.  The Sunny Art Prize is an international art competition hosted by Sunny Art Centre, London. This fine art award is a global platform, giving an opportunity to emerging and established artists to showcase their talents to a wider audience. We aim to display artistic and cultural diversity to the international art scenes of London, Beijing, Guangzhou and Macau. Sunny Art Award will promote an exchange in creativity between Western and Eastern cultures. We are looking for a variety of submissions which can range from two-dimensional works such as paintings, drawings and photographs, to three-dimensional sculptures, and ceramics. Strange Figurations (NY)

Deadline: June 30. Strange Figurations is an international, thematic group exhibition curated and hosted by the Limner Gallery. The exhibition is open to all interpretations of the concept, Strange Figurations, which would include surreal, visionary and generally all out of the ordinary figurative art. Times Square Arts invites you to submit original moving-image artwork to Midnight Moment, the world’s largest, longest-running digital art exhibition synchronized on electronic billboards and Newspaper Kiosks throughout Times Square nightly from 11:57pm to midnight. King Street Gallery Call for Entry (MD)

Deadline: November 25. The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation Arts Center has a number of spaces available for mounting exhibitions that support the academic mission of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts. This open call is for our King Street Gallery, the largest exhibition space in the Cafritz Arts Center. This light filled, 1050 square foot gallery is in the main atrium of the building. Its prominent location, open design, and extremely high ceilings (30 feet+) make it a great venue for major exhibitions. While much of this gallery space is visible from the main lobby of the building, and through the windows that front onto the street, it does maintain gallery hours and is locked after hours. The gallery hours are Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.– 4 p.m. Exhibitions are generally scheduled a year in advance to complement the academic calendar. Exhibitions in the King Street Gallery are 4-5 weeks long, and emphasize two person or small group shows. Single artist applications may be paired with a complimentary artist or artists to better utilize the space. The Creativity Grant Program State of Maryland (MD)

Deadline: Rolling. The purpose of the Creativity Grant Program is to strengthen the vitality and sustainability of artists and small organizations to maintain a strong and stable arts infrastructure in the State of Maryland. The Creativity Grant also provides opportunities to serve the growing needs of relevant arts projects and collaborations within Maryland communities. Artist/Writers: Cover Art for Academic Medicine

Deadline: Rolling. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. Artist/Writers: Medicine and the Arts (MATA) Opportunity

Deadline: Rolling. This column is the journal’s longest-running feature. It is published on two facing pages. The left-hand page features an excerpt from literature, a poem, a photograph, etc. Literature excerpts generally run no more than 700 words and may include a very brief introduction as needed. The right-hand page presents an original commentary of about 900 words that explores the relevance of the artwork to the teaching, learning, and/or practice of medicine. Since submissions cannot be fully accepted for publication until Academic Medicine acquires permission to reprint literary excerpts or artworks (which often takes many months), authors should include all relevant information about the piece they are explicating (publisher, museum, dates, etc.) to enable staff editors to find and contact the copyright holder. The Awesome Foundation Accepting Applications for Art Projects

Deadline: Open. The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is a worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of “awesomeness in the universe.” Established in 2009, the foundation distributes $1,000 grants on a monthly basis to projects and their creators. The money is pooled from ten or more self-organizing “micro-trustees.” The chapters are autonomous and organized by the trustees around geographic areas or topics of interest. Call for Artists: Maryland Art Place Seeks Proposals for Rotating Exhibition Partnership with Baltimore’s Hotel Indigo (MD)

Deadline: rolling. Maryland Art Place (MAP), in partnership with Hotel Indigo is pleased to announce an open ‘Call to Artists’. As an extension of MAP’s annual IMPACT public art partnership projects, MAP is working with Hotel Indigo to offer rotating exhibitions in Hotel indigo’s library and Poets Modern Cocktails and Eats. This opportunity is available to visual artists living or working in Maryland. Maryland Art Place will curate four exhibitions a year based on submissions entered through a rolling basis. Peripheral ARTeries – Biennial Contemporary Art Publication

Deadline: Rolling. Peripheral ARTeries is looking for artists to be featured in the new special Biennial Edition of their art publication, that comes to its 10th edition. This opportunity is great for both established and early career artists who need a boost to their artist portfolio. Exhibit at Hotel Indigo (VA)

Artists works will displayed in the hotel’s gallery (220 S Union St, Old Town Alexandria) for a six-month period. Two-dimensional, framed works only. Artists will install the work using the hotel’s mounting hardware. Labels will be provided by the hotel. All sales handled by artist, no commission. Artist Opportunities

Eye Opening: Berit Jerama Estabrook’s “Eyes of the Wild”

Berit Estabrook’s peaceful woodland creatures, at first, seem saccharin and whimsical, but with a deeper look show the cracks in the relationship between humans and nature. Given almost human-like emotions, the creatures in Estabrook’s acrylics seem to call out to the viewer…in many cases, that call is “HELP!”

“My aspiration,” says Estabrook, “is to remind myself and the the viewer of the sacredness of nature and the interdependence of all living things. While most of us have a sense of our roles within the ecosystem, I want to to express how our connectedness goes deeper, beyond the visible.”

One of Estabrook’s integral character is a portrait of a caribou with expressive tones of both ice and earth in  Arctic Moment I. Caribou, nicknamed “grey ghosts” for their elusive nature, are currently endangered in the United States due to human activity.

“Only when we believe that we are isolated from nature can we do it harm.” says Estabrook.

Eyes of the Wild will be on view at The Art League Gallery May 8—June 2, 2019.

Sightlines, 2019-2021: Call for Entries (IN)

Deadline: May 12. The South Bend Museum of Art (SBMA) is seeking large-scale 2D and 3D artwork for long-term display in Sightlines, a collaborative project between SBMA and Century Center. The two year exhibition will highlight the work of six new artists. Indoor and outdoor sites for the work are available and will be considered for accepted work. Artist submission review and selection will be done by representatives from SBMA and Century Center. There is a $10 entry fee to apply. $1000 stipend for each selected artist. Sixth Annual Clifton, VA Plein Air Painting Festival and Competition (VA)

Deadline: May 15. Please accept our invitation to paint and compete, en plein air, in historic Clifton, VA on May 16-19, 2019. (rain or shine). In Clifton, a small, one square mile town, you don’t have to go far to find a quaintness waiting to be painted and interpreted with your inspiration. FJORD Gallery 6th Annual Open Call (PA)

Deadline: May 19. FJORD Gallery is pleased to announce our 2019 Open Call! Artists are invited to submit their work for consideration in this group exhibition, to run July 6 – August 1, 2019. So Fresh + So Clean Metalsmithing Exhibit

Ethical Metalsmith Students (EM Students) is examining what it means to be an artist in the 21st century by curating the most innovative jewelry and metalsmithing work made within the past 2 years. Applicants will be considered for the Annual Emerging Artist Award. We understand a completely sustainable practice is an ever-evolving goal. However, the first step is becoming aware of the ways our work impacts environmental and human health. It adds an important layer to the creative decision making of artists. Sunny Art Center International Art Prize (UK)

Deadline: June 30.  The Sunny Art Prize is an international art competition hosted by Sunny Art Centre, London. This fine art award is a global platform, giving an opportunity to emerging and established artists to showcase their talents to a wider audience. We aim to display artistic and cultural diversity to the international art scenes of London, Beijing, Guangzhou and Macau. Sunny Art Award will promote an exchange in creativity between Western and Eastern cultures. We are looking for a variety of submissions which can range from two-dimensional works such as paintings, drawings and photographs, to three-dimensional sculptures, and ceramics. Times Square Arts invites you to submit original moving-image artwork to Midnight Moment, the world’s largest, longest-running digital art exhibition synchronized on electronic billboards and Newspaper Kiosks throughout Times Square nightly from 11:57pm to midnight. King Street Gallery Call for Entry (MD)

Deadline: November 25. The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation Arts Center has a number of spaces available for mounting exhibitions that support the academic mission of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts. This open call is for our King Street Gallery, the largest exhibition space in the Cafritz Arts Center. This light filled, 1050 square foot gallery is in the main atrium of the building. Its prominent location, open design, and extremely high ceilings (30 feet+) make it a great venue for major exhibitions. While much of this gallery space is visible from the main lobby of the building, and through the windows that front onto the street, it does maintain gallery hours and is locked after hours. The gallery hours are Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.– 4 p.m. Exhibitions are generally scheduled a year in advance to complement the academic calendar. Exhibitions in the King Street Gallery are 4-5 weeks long, and emphasize two person or small group shows. Single artist applications may be paired with a complimentary artist or artists to better utilize the space. Curated proposals are encouraged. Deadline: Rolling. The purpose of the Creativity Grant Program is to strengthen the vitality and sustainability of artists and small organizations to maintain a strong and stable arts infrastructure in the State of Maryland. The Creativity Grant also provides opportunities to serve the growing needs of relevant arts projects and collaborations within Maryland communities. Artist/Writers: Cover Art for Academic Medicine

Deadline: Rolling. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. Artist/Writers: Medicine and the Arts (MATA) Opportunity

Deadline: Rolling. This column is the journal’s longest-running feature. It is published on two facing pages. The left-hand page features an excerpt from literature, a poem, a photograph, etc. Literature excerpts generally run no more than 700 words and may include a very brief introduction as needed. The right-hand page presents an original commentary of about 900 words that explores the relevance of the artwork to the teaching, learning, and/or practice of medicine. Since submissions cannot be fully accepted for publication until Academic Medicine acquires permission to reprint literary excerpts or artworks (which often takes many months), authors should include all relevant information about the piece they are explicating (publisher, museum, dates, etc.) to enable staff editors to find and contact the copyright holder. The Awesome Foundation Accepting Applications for Art Projects

Deadline: Open. The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is a worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of “awesomeness in the universe.” Established in 2009, the foundation distributes $1,000 grants on a monthly basis to projects and their creators. The money is pooled from ten or more self-organizing “micro-trustees.” The chapters are autonomous and organized by the trustees around geographic areas or topics of interest. Call for Artists: Maryland Art Place Seeks Proposals for Rotating Exhibition Partnership with Baltimore’s Hotel Indigo (MD)

Deadline: rolling. Maryland Art Place (MAP), in partnership with Hotel Indigo is pleased to announce an open ‘Call to Artists’. As an extension of MAP’s annual IMPACT public art partnership projects, MAP is working with Hotel Indigo to offer rotating exhibitions in Hotel indigo’s library and Poets Modern Cocktails and Eats. This opportunity is available to visual artists living or working in Maryland. Maryland Art Place will curate four exhibitions a year based on submissions entered through a rolling basis. Peripheral ARTeries – Biennial Contemporary Art Publication

Deadline: Rolling. Peripheral ARTeries is looking for artists to be featured in the new special Biennial Edition of their art publication, that comes to its 10th edition. This opportunity is great for both established and early career artists who need a boost to their artist portfolio. The 10th edition will once again explore and show current trends and tendencies in Contemporary Art: Peripheral ARTeries cultivates a spirit of openness through a unique collaborative and participatory approach.Each artist may submit a maximum of three works or projects made in any technique: painting, drawing, video art, experimental cinema, fine art photography, experimental media, mixed media, installations, public art, performance. Exhibit at Hotel Indigo (VA)

Artists works will displayed in the hotel’s gallery (220 S Union St, Old Town Alexandria) for a six-month period. Two-dimensional, framed works only.   • Creating the Modern Doll with new Art League Instructor, Chris Malone – Ever wanted to create your own doll version of yourself? Or a fun artistic character? This class new class is definitely for you! Students are shown the techniques used in making a free hand 12″ to 15″ imaginative and original doll.

Summer Workshops:

  • Raku Firing Workshop with David Flohr on June 11 – The history of Raku dates as far back as the 16th century for a special tea ceremony in Kyoto. Raku pieces are taken from the kiln while still red-hot, and placed on a flamable item, and starved of oxygen. The effect is very different from a traditional glaze. Take your ceramic work to the next level! 
  • Japanese Papermaking with Saaraliisa Ylitalo on May 18 – Japanese paper, known as washi, is characterized by its thinness and strength and is commonly made from the inner bark of the mulberry bush. This class progresses through all the steps in Japanese papermaking: starting with pulp preparation, cooking and scraping the fibers clean, and then beating them into pulp.  Students form as many sheets as time allows from foth abaca (banana fibers or Manila Hemp) and kozo (mulberry fibers).

  • Rose Painting (Oil) with Visiting Artist Kathleen Speranza on June 11 – Perfect for when you want to fine-tune your work with this stunning (but notoriously difficult) flower type. 
Ceramics by Hitomi and Takuro Shibata
  • Traditional Japanese Ceramics Techniques with Visting Artists Hitomi and Takuro Shibata: June 14-16 – Hitomi and Takuro learned pottery making as professional studio potters in Shigaraki, one of the oldest and largest pottery villages in Japan and will be bringing their unique expertise to the Art League. Be sure to catch Hitomi and Takuro’s jurying selections at the June “Tabletop exhibit” in the Gallery.

Photo Stories at RICPA (RI)

Deadline: May 1. Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts (RICPA) is looking for work in series (5 image minimum) for its Photo Stories Open Call, juried by Michael Itkoff, Co-founder of Daylight Books. Michael interned at the Annie Leibovitz Studio, Aperture Foundation and worked at Rizzoli International Publications. The exhibition will be on display June 20 – July 12. $500 in cash prizes. One image can speak a thousand words, a properly sequenced set of photographs can tell a fantastic story. This is your chance to exhibit work that extends across a set of images to tell a story or explore an idea. We are looking for your story in photographs. Open to all photo-based work with no restrictions on subject matter or technique. Entries will be judged as a series, 5 or more images will be included at the juror’s discretion. $55 entry fee. Sweetwater Center for the Arts: Call for Solo Exhibition (PA)

Deadline: May 1. Sweetwater invites emerging and established artists who reside within 200 miles of Pittsburgh, PA to submit artwork for an opportunity to have a 5-week solo exhibition at Sweetwater. Open to artist working in all 2D and 3D media, film/video not accepted. Submit 10 images of artwork created within the last 3 years, an artist statement, image list and CV. Selected artist will receive a $200 stipend and will be asked to present an artist talk during the duration of the exhibition at Sweetwater. Void: A Call for Works About the Unknown (OH)

Deadline: May 7. The Cincinnati based non-profit arts organization and gallery, Manifest, invites visual artists and designers to submit works that in some way represent, either through subject, form, or content, the concept, image, or feeling of the Unknown, Uncertainty, or Void. Uncertainty is inevitable. It is the dark matter making up the large portion of our perception and experience of being. The unknown remains as much the realm of learners as it is of the uneducated – it defines both, and us all, in ways we may often find uncomfortable, or revealing of a depth of humanity, (or humility) – our least common denominator – often left dormant in living a modern life. All types of visual art in the broadest sense are welcome, including traditional and non-traditional approaches in any media, and any subject, realistic, non-objective, abstract, conceptual, etc. $40 entry fee. Sixth Annual Clifton, VA Plein Air Painting Festival and Competition (VA)

King Street Gallery Call for Entry (MD)

Deadline: November 25. The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation Arts Center has a number of spaces available for mounting exhibitions that support the academic mission of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts. This open call is for our King Street Gallery, the largest exhibition space in the Cafritz Arts Center. This light filled, 1050 square foot gallery is in the main atrium of the building. Its prominent location, open design, and extremely high ceilings (30 feet+) make it a great venue for major exhibitions. While much of this gallery space is visible from the main lobby of the building, and through the windows that front onto the street, it does maintain gallery hours and is locked after hours. The gallery hours are Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.– 4 p.m. Exhibitions are generally scheduled a year in advance to complement the academic calendar. Exhibitions in the King Street Gallery are 4-5 weeks long, and emphasize two person or small group shows. Single artist applications may be paired with a complimentary artist or artists to better utilize the space. Curated proposals are encouraged. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. Artist/Writers: Medicine and the Arts (MATA) Opportunity

Deadline: Rolling. This column is the journal’s longest-running feature. It is published on two facing pages. The left-hand page features an excerpt from literature, a poem, a photograph, etc. Literature excerpts generally run no more than 700 words and may include a very brief introduction as needed. The right-hand page presents an original commentary of about 900 words that explores the relevance of the artwork to the teaching, learning, and/or practice of medicine. Since submissions cannot be fully accepted for publication until Academic Medicine acquires permission to reprint literary excerpts or artworks (which often takes many months), authors should include all relevant information about the piece they are explicating (publisher, museum, dates, etc.) to enable staff editors to find and contact the copyright holder. The Awesome Foundation Accepting Applications for Art Projects

Deadline: Open. The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is a worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of “awesomeness in the universe.” Established in 2009, the foundation distributes $1,000 grants on a monthly basis to projects and their creators. The money is pooled from ten or more self-organizing “micro-trustees.” The chapters are autonomous and organized by the trustees around geographic areas or topics of interest. Call for Artists: Maryland Art Place Seeks Proposals for Rotating Exhibition Partnership with Baltimore’s Hotel Indigo (MD)

The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation Arts Center has a number of spaces available for mounting exhibitions that support the academic mission of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts. This open call is for our King Street Gallery, the largest exhibition space in the Cafritz Arts Center. This light filled, 1050 square foot gallery is in the main atrium of the building. Its prominent location, open design, and extremely high ceilings (30 feet+) make it a great venue for major exhibitions. While much of this gallery space is visible from the main lobby of the building, and through the windows that front onto the street, it does maintain gallery hours and is locked after hours. The gallery hours are Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.– 4 p.m. Exhibitions are generally scheduled a year in advance to complement the academic calendar. Bugs’ Life: Megan Partridge’s “Bugs. Or Kafka on Prozac.” Brings Humanity to the Insect World

Megan Partridge’s bugs not only bring their own life to the canvas…but also a similarity to our own every day lives. The very human feelings of imbibing too much, or inspiration, or of smugness are portrayed in the style of work as well as the expression of the bugs.

Partridge’s work has transformed the gallery in to a jewel-colored Spring ecosystem, from the expressive paintwork of “Tink’s Angry Adolescent Phase” to the almost basket-like hatched background of “Well, Actually” to the center of the exhibit which features the magnificently bedraggled “Hangover Cricket.”

According to Partridge, the paintings are an exploration of herself, “one bug at a time.” Each Bug has their own personality, that reflects on not only the human experience, but also the artist.

Megan Partridge is a self-taught artist residing in the District of Columbia. She currently holds degrees from the University of Virginia and Duke University. Partridge, like approximately ten percent of the population, lives with a condition named aphantasia – a blind mind’s eye. Ever since, she has looked at making art as an opportunity to find new ways to explore herself and visually represent her own thoughts and feelings. Art affords her a vocabulary to translate her mind and thoughts into something visual. Regardless of the subject or style, Partridge’s work inevitably speaks to who she is.

Deadline: May 12. The South Bend Museum of Art (SBMA) is seeking large-scale 2D and 3D artwork for long-term display in Sightlines, a collaborative project between SBMA and Century Center. The two year exhibition will highlight the work of six new artists. Indoor and outdoor sites for the work are available and will be considered for accepted work. Artist submission review and selection will be done by representatives from SBMA and Century Center. There is a $10 entry fee to apply. $1000 stipend for each selected artist. Here at The Art League we love seeing students hone their art skills and become emerging artists in their own right. This month in the April Mixed Media show you might see a colorful portrait that incorporates a distinctive metal sort of “hairdo.”

The piece,  The Mage, is the first piece featured in The Art League Gallery by Bev Ryan student, Begoña Lathbury, who won an honorable mention in the April Mixed Media show for her mixed media piece. Lathbury won her membership in the Student/Faculty show, and it was her first time entering! We chatted with Lathbury about her progression from student to exhibitor and about her eye-catching piece:

You were a student of Bev Ryan, what originally led you to The Art League School?

Back in the 1980s and early 90s, I took sculpture classes, primarily in stone carving, at the Corcoran School of Art. After the birth of our second child, I realized that stone carving would have to stop (too much silica dust). I began to make studio jewelry and assemblage art from wood, metal, and computer components, but my painting skills were rudimentary. I searched for a painting class closer to home in Alexandria. In Bev Ryan at the Art League, I found a teacher to encourage me to paint more expressively and freely.

What class did you take with Bev, and have you taken any other classes at The Art League? Are you planning on taking any more classes?

I am now a longtime student in Bev’s Thursday abstract painting class, Beyond the Tangible. My husband, Roger, takes the class with me. We love Bev! Attending her class has become an important part of my art practice and, as an added bonus, it has been the source of several wonderful friendships.

Bev has the confidence to encourage her students to experiment and to deviate from her own assignments. She nurtures us as individual artists. For the past two years in her class, I have been working primarily on equine paintings, along with occasional animal-human figures. I’m definitely one of the more representational painters in class, but Bev has never made me feel uncomfortable for refusing to paint “beyond the tangible” abstractions.

Over the years, I have taken several other courses at the Art League (jewelry making, clay figure and portrait, bronze casting, drawing, oil painting, and Bev’s Narrative painting class), but I always return to “Beyond the Tangible.” I imagine I’ll be there until the day Bev retires, which I hope is many, many years from now.

In your piece, The Mage what was your inspiration? What materials did you use to accomplish the mixed media composition of the piece?

“The Mage” is a portrait of an enchanter, a wizard in modern garb. It’s one of those pieces that seemed to create itself magically after a long incubation period. It started in my studio, three years ago, with some very fluid acrylic paint that I pushed here and there with the intent of creating a portrait. I mixed the acrylic with a medium that, once dry, created deep fissures in the paint surface. I loved the colors and the texture but was unsure where to go next. The painting sat on a shelf in my studio for three years. Meanwhile, about two years ago, during a walk through town, I found a small piece of filigreed and rusted steel on the road. I placed it on the kitchen window sill of our home, where it stayed. Just recently I realized that the painting and the metal piece would fit together. For me, that is magic!

What was the piece you submitted to the Student/Faculty show?

My piece for the Student/Faculty show was a bull-human created from painted cardboard and topped with horns made from a lovely crescent of rusted metal that I found on the street outside the Madison Street Annex. Although in my mind this piece harkens back to my assemblage sculpture days, I created it during a recent session in Bev’s class. Later that same day, I submitted it to the show. It was Bev who encouraged me to submit it (I had been planning to submit one of my more sedate horse paintings). This painted bull is quite clearly, and rather prominently, a male fertility god. I was delighted when it received an award.

Bev has said, “Begoña Lathbury’s work is always innovative and up to date. Her skill, intuitive decision making and wit have brought us this portrait that fires on all cylinders. It is both haunting and humorous. Begoña has a unique voice. I can’t wait to see what she does next” about your piece. What would you say that you’re unique voice is…or how would you describe it at this point in your work?

It’s extraordinarily kind of Bev to say such things about my work. My unique voice? I would say that my best works are pagan and joyfully spiritual. I aim to make work that looks fresh, although I spend a lot of time reading and absorbing ancient world mythologies. My artworks reference mythological themes while also reflecting our times.  

April’s Mixed Media exhibit was juried by Lavar Munroe  and features Begona’s piece. The Space of Her Own Special Photography Exhibit and Megan Patridge’s “Bugs. Or Kafka on Prozac” exhibit is also on view through May 5.

Earth Devised: A Juried National Exhibition of Ceramic Art (VA)

Deadline: April 14. The d’Art Center in Norfolk, Virginia announces a call to artists for an upcoming juried exhibition, May 11 – June 6, 2019. Awards for 1st: $500, 2nd: $300, 3rd: $150. Juror: Richard Nickel. Open to artists 18 or older, residing in the United States. All work must be original and created without the aid of an instructor or kit. Work needs to have been produced within the last five years. All styles and aesthetics are considered. The d’Art Center is a public non-profit art center open to everyone; as such, the content of submissions should be appropriate for all viewers. Fiber Arts National Juried Exhibition (VA)

Sightlines, 2019-2021: Call for Entries (IN)

Deadline: May 12. The South Bend Museum of Art (SBMA) is seeking large-scale 2D and 3D artwork for long-term display in Sightlines, a collaborative project between SBMA and Century Center. The two year exhibition will highlight the work of six new artists. Indoor and outdoor sites for the work are available and will be considered for accepted work. Artist submission review and selection will be done by representatives from SBMA and Century Center. There is a $10 entry fee to apply. $1000 stipend for each selected artist. The LUX Center for the Arts: 2019-2020 Residencies (NE)

Deadline: April 4. The LUX Center for the Arts in Lincoln, Nebraska is currently accepting applications for 2019-2020 year long residencies in all media. A strong desire to teach is required. Artists with more than one area of expertise and an MFA are preferred. This residency can be extended an additional year if both the LUX and the artist agree. All residents receive free studio space (shared or private depending on medium and space available) and 24-hour access and use of equipment in the studio area to which they applied. Ceramics residents have access to regularly stocked clay and glaze materials and use of kilns in exchange for studio maintenance duties. All residents can buy materials from the LUX at cost.Residents have priority for paid, on-site teaching opportunities including community art classes for youth and adults. Residents with an MFA or BFA in painting, ceramics, or metalsmithing have the opportunity to teach college art classes for Doane College-Lincoln campus, held at the LUX. 89th Annual Juried Open Exhibition (NY)

Deadline: April 5. The National Art League in Douglaston, NY announces a call to artists for a juried art exhibition, May 6 – June 1, 2019. Over $2,000 in Awards – First Place: $500. Juror: Mitchell Goldberg – Gallery Director at the Upstream Gallery, NY. Open to all artists 18 years of age or older, working in all traditional and non-traditional 2D and 3D media, including sculpture. All artwork must be original in concept, design and execution. Photography, film, video, computer art, reproductions (such as giclee, prints) are not acceptable unless part of a mixed media artwork or collage. Installation art or performance art are not accepted. No crafts (such as jewelry) or kit work. No artwork previously exhibited at NAL. Artwork must not exceed 48 inches in any dimension including frame. Sculpture must not exceed 30 inches in any dimension. $35 one entry, $10 second entry. Fees are non-refundable. Contemporary South 2019 Call-For-Art (NC)

Deadline: April 6. VAE’s Contemporary South (CoSo) exhibit showcases what the South is currently thinking, discussing, and making work about. In one of our most popular annual calls VAE is looking for entries of recent art made by artists currently working in the following 11 states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. Contemporary South 2019 will be curated and juried by Rachel Reese, Associate Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Telfair in Savannah, Georgia. Rochester Contemporary Art Center 6x6x2019 – The International Small Art Phenomenon (NY)

Deadline: April 14. What brings together artists from all over the world of all different skill levels? There’s no entry fee so get creative and send RoCo your artworks by ‪April 14 or postmarked April 13. Rochester Contemporary Art Center (RoCo) is a venue for the exchange of ideas and a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) that was founded in 1977. Biennial 30: Call for Entries (IN)

Deadline: April 14. The South Bend Museum of Art’s all media Biennial 30 will present a diverse look into contemporary artwork in the Midwest and is open to all artists residing in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin. The number of exhibiting artists is deliberately limited to allow for the showing of a greater body of work by each artist. This year’s exhibition will be juried by Sarah Rose Sharp, a Detroit-based writer (Art in America, Hyperallergic, Flash Art, Sculpture Magazine, ArtSlant and others), activist, and multimedia artist. $1,500 in awards will be selected by the juror and $1,500 in purchase awards will be chosen by the South Bend Museum of Art’s Collections Committee. The  US Mint Basketball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin Design Competition (Nationwide)

Deadline: April 15. The United States Mint invites artists from across the country to participate in the Basketball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin Design Competition. Public Law 115-343 authorizes the Secretary of the Treasury to mint and issue domed $5 gold coins, domed $1 silver coins, and domed half-dollar clad coins, in recognition of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.  Dedicated to the creator of the game, Dr. James Naismith, and located in Springfield, Massachusetts, where the game was first played, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is recognized on a global scale as the institution that records and shares the history of basketball, including its greatest players, coaches and contributors. Deadline: April 15. Foundry Gallery is welcoming applications for a guest solo exhibit at its industrial-style space in Washington DC. Sweetwater Center for the Arts: Call for Solo Exhibition (PA)

Deadline: May 1. Sweetwater invites emerging and established artists who reside within 200 miles of Pittsburgh, PA to submit artwork for an opportunity to have a 5-week solo exhibition at Sweetwater. Open to artist working in all 2D and 3D media, film/video not accepted. Submit 10 images of artwork created within the last 3 years, an artist statement, image list and CV. Sixth Annual Clifton, VA Plein Air Painting Festival and Competition (VA)

Deadline: May 15. Please accept our invitation to paint and compete, en plein air, in historic Clifton, VA on May 16-19, 2019. (rain or shine). We have a special setting that includes historic homes and a barn, beautiful gardens, gazebo in the park, winding lanes and a winding creek, lakeside home, a railroad crossing with caboose, and a donkey named “jackpot.”  In Clifton, a small, one square mile town, you don’t have to go far to find a quaintness waiting to be painted and interpreted with your inspiration. So Fresh + So Clean Metalsmithing Exhibit

Ethical Metalsmith Students (EM Students) is examining what it means to be an artist in the 21st century by curating the most innovative jewelry and metalsmithing work made within the past 2 years. Applicants will be considered for the Annual Emerging Artist Award. We understand a completely sustainable practice is an ever-evolving goal. However, the first step is becoming aware of the ways our work impacts environmental and human health. It adds an important layer to the creative decision making of artists.Through the lens of sustainability EM Students challenges you to investigate your studio, processes, methods, and personal goals. Sunny Art Center International Art Prize (UK)

Deadline: June 30.  The Sunny Art Prize is an international art competition hosted by Sunny Art Centre, London. This fine art award is a global platform, giving an opportunity to emerging and established artists to showcase their talents to a wider audience. We aim to display artistic and cultural diversity to the international art scenes of London, Beijing, Guangzhou and Macau. Sunny Art Award will promote an exchange in creativity between Western and Eastern cultures. We are looking for a variety of submissions which can range from two-dimensional works such as paintings, drawings and photographs, to three-dimensional sculptures, and ceramics. King Street Gallery Call for Entry (MD)

Deadline: November 25. The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation Arts Center has a number of spaces available for mounting exhibitions that support the academic mission of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts. This open call is for our King Street Gallery, the largest exhibition space in the Cafritz Arts Center. This light filled, 1050 square foot gallery is in the main atrium of the building. Its prominent location, open design, and extremely high ceilings (30 feet+) make it a great venue for major exhibitions. While much of this gallery space is visible from the main lobby of the building, and through the windows that front onto the street, it does maintain gallery hours and is locked after hours. The gallery hours are Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.– 4 p.m. Exhibitions are generally scheduled a year in advance to complement the academic calendar. Exhibitions in the King Street Gallery are 4-5 weeks long, and emphasize two person or small group shows. Single artist applications may be paired with a complimentary artist or artists to better utilize the space. Curated proposals are encouraged. The Creativity Grant Program State of Maryland (MD)

Deadline: Rolling. The purpose of the Creativity Grant Program is to strengthen the vitality and sustainability of artists and small organizations to maintain a strong and stable arts infrastructure in the State of Maryland. The Creativity Grant also provides opportunities to serve the growing needs of relevant arts projects and collaborations within Maryland communities. Artist/Writers: Cover Art for Academic Medicine

Deadline: Rolling. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. Artist/Writers: Medicine and the Arts (MATA) Opportunity

Deadline: Rolling. This column is the journal’s longest-running feature. It is published on two facing pages. The left-hand page features an excerpt from literature, a poem, a photograph, etc. Literature excerpts generally run no more than 700 words and may include a very brief introduction as needed. The right-hand page presents an original commentary of about 900 words that explores the relevance of the artwork to the teaching, learning, and/or practice of medicine. Since submissions cannot be fully accepted for publication until Academic Medicine acquires permission to reprint literary excerpts or artworks (which often takes many months), authors should include all relevant information about the piece they are explicating (publisher, museum, dates, etc.) to enable staff editors to find and contact the copyright holder. The Awesome Foundation Accepting Applications for Art Projects

Deadline: Open. The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is a worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of “awesomeness in the universe.” Established in 2009, the foundation distributes $1,000 grants on a monthly basis to projects and their creators. The money is pooled from ten or more self-organizing “micro-trustees.” The chapters are autonomous and organized by the trustees around geographic areas or topics of interest. Call for Artists: Maryland Art Place Seeks Proposals for Rotating Exhibition Partnership with Baltimore’s Hotel Indigo (MD)

Deadline: rolling. Maryland Art Place (MAP), in partnership with Hotel Indigo is pleased to announce an open ‘Call to Artists’. As an extension of MAP’s annual IMPACT public art partnership projects, MAP is working with Hotel Indigo to offer rotating exhibitions in Hotel indigo’s library and Poets Modern Cocktails and Eats. This opportunity is available to visual artists living or working in Maryland. Maryland Art Place will curate four exhibitions a year based on submissions entered through a rolling basis. Peripheral ARTeries – Biennial Contemporary Art Publication

Deadline: Rolling. Peripheral ARTeries is looking for artists to be featured in the new special Biennial Edition of their art publication, that comes to its 10th edition. This opportunity is great for both established and early career artists who need a boost to their artist portfolio. The Trawick Prize: Bethesda Contemporary Art Awards is a visual art prize produced by the Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District that honors artists from Maryland, Washington, D.C. and Virginia. The annual juried competition awards $14,000 in prize monies to selected artists and features the work of the finalists in a group exhibition. $10,000 Best in Show prize. Call For Art: Light vs. Dark – National Exhibition Juried – MA

Deadline: March 31. Gallery 263’s upcoming national juried exhibition Light vs. Dark invites artists working in any media to submit their interpretations of either subject. Light and dark may not only refer to artwork visually, but could also be depicted in the content of the work itself. Deadline: March 31. Art Enables presents “Limitation:LIberation” Open Call for artists. Open to artists living in D.C., Maryland, or Virginia. Work should be made within the last 5 years by an artist who lives or works in D.C., Maryland, or Virginia and work should consist of a limited cool palette or limited warm palette. Art on the Avenue Call for Artists (VA)

Deadline: April 1 (preferred), rolling. Art on the Avenue is  a multicultural arts and music festival organized by the Del Ray Community Partnership, and hosted by the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria. The show welcomes applications from all craft artists, and is known for high quality artwork in a friendly, neighborhood atmosphere. Applications mailed by April 1st have the best chance of being accepted into the show. However, we continue to accept applications after April 1st until all spaces have been filled. The fee for 2019 is $200 for applications postmarked before April 1st, $225 after April 1st. Acceptance is NOT guaranteed for returning artists. The number of artists in each category will be limited to ensure a balanced distribution of art forms. Call for Artists: ‘UN/Sustainable’ – Stamp Gallery Exhibition (MD)

Deadline: April 1.  In recent years there has been a resurgence of concern about sustainability as the world confronts and reacts to the ramifications of decisions, past and present. The impending environmental realities of the future give birth to revolutionary conversation and oftentimes protest. Artists sit at the forefront of these movements, using their stories to open the eyes of viewers and reflect upon their own relationships to the physical world. A lack of concern for the earth, and more widely the cultures and peoples that so heavily rely on nature, reflects larger structures of power at play and forces questions about our collective priorities. UN/Sustainable will examine these priorities through contemporary works that critically interact in bold and creative ways with the artist’s experience of the physical world and its future. The exhibition will feature a range of media and will seek to include art that asks: what is the role of sustainability in the art world? What is an artist’s responsibility to the environment in art creation? In documentation? In protest? Can art play a role in sustaining the earth or is it merely reflection on the issues?  How do culture and larger power structures affect environmental action and opinion? Propose an exhibition at UMW Galleries (VA)

Deadline: April 1. The UMW Galleries accept proposals from professional artists and curators for solo and group exhibitions for each of our gallery spaces (Ridderhof Martin Gallery and duPont Gallery). Proposals should be submitted via the UMW Galleries submittable form.  Deadlines: Proposals are accepted year round, but are collected for review on November 1 and April 1. Any applications received after the deadline will automatically be considered for the following deadline. Notification will be given via email within a year of submission. Include the following attachments in your submission: A description of the proposed exhibition. An artist’s statement or curatorial statement. Artist/ curator current resume or CV. The LUX Center for the Arts: 2019-2020 Residencies (NE)

Deadline: April 4. The LUX Center for the Arts in Lincoln, Nebraska is currently accepting applications for 2019-2020 year long residencies in all media. A strong desire to teach is required. Artists with more than one area of expertise and an MFA are preferred. This residency can be extended an additional year if both the LUX and the artist agree. All residents receive free studio space (shared or private depending on medium and space available) and 24-hour access and use of equipment in the studio area to which they applied. Ceramics residents have access to regularly stocked clay and glaze materials and use of kilns in exchange for studio maintenance duties. All residents can buy materials from the LUX at cost.Residents have priority for paid, on-site teaching opportunities including community art classes for youth and adults. Residents with an MFA or BFA in painting, ceramics, or metalsmithing have the opportunity to teach college art classes for Doane College-Lincoln campus, held at the LUX. 89th Annual Juried Open Exhibition (NY)

Deadline: April 5. The National Art League in Douglaston, NY announces a call to artists for a juried art exhibition, May 6 – June 1, 2019. Over $2,000 in Awards – First Place: $500. Juror: Mitchell Goldberg – Gallery Director at the Upstream Gallery, NY. Open to all artists 18 years of age or older, working in all traditional and non-traditional 2D and 3D media, including sculpture. All artwork must be original in concept, design and execution. Photography, film, video, computer art, reproductions (such as giclee, prints) are not acceptable unless part of a mixed media artwork or collage. Installation art or performance art are not accepted. No crafts (such as jewelry) or kit work. No artwork previously exhibited at NAL. Contemporary South 2019 Call-For-Art (NC)

Deadline: April 6. VAE’s Contemporary South (CoSo) exhibit showcases what the South is currently thinking, discussing, and making work about. In one of our most popular annual calls VAE is looking for entries of recent art made by artists currently working in the following 11 states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. Contemporary South 2019 will be curated and juried by Rachel Reese, Associate Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Telfair in Savannah, Georgia. Rochester Contemporary Art Center 6x6x2019 – The International Small Art Phenomenon (NY)

Deadline: April 14. What brings together artists from all over the world of all different skill levels? There’s no entry fee so get creative and send RoCo your artworks by ‪April 14 or postmarked April 13. Rochester Contemporary Art Center (RoCo) is a venue for the exchange of ideas and a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) that was founded in 1977. Biennial 30: Call for Entries (IN)

Deadline: April 14. The South Bend Museum of Art’s all media Biennial 30 will present a diverse look into contemporary artwork in the Midwest and is open to all artists residing in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin. The number of exhibiting artists is deliberately limited to allow for the showing of a greater body of work by each artist. This year’s exhibition will be juried by Sarah Rose Sharp, a Detroit-based writer (Art in America, Hyperallergic, Flash Art, Sculpture Magazine, ArtSlant and others), activist, and multimedia artist. $1,500 in awards will be selected by the juror and $1,500 in purchase awards will be chosen by the South Bend Museum of Art’s Collections Committee. The  US Mint Basketball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin Design Competition (Nationwide)

Deadline: April 15. The United States Mint invites artists from across the country to participate in the Basketball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin Design Competition. Public Law 115-343 authorizes the Secretary of the Treasury to mint and issue domed $5 gold coins, domed $1 silver coins, and domed half-dollar clad coins, in recognition of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.  Dedicated to the creator of the game, Dr. James Naismith, and located in Springfield, Massachusetts, where the game was first played, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is recognized on a global scale as the institution that records and shares the history of basketball, including its greatest players, coaches and contributors. Sweetwater Center for the Arts: Call for Solo Exhibition (PA)

Deadline: May 1. Sweetwater invites emerging and established artists who reside within 200 miles of Pittsburgh, PA to submit artwork for an opportunity to have a 5-week solo exhibition at Sweetwater. Open to artist working in all 2D and 3D media, film/video not accepted. Submit 10 images of artwork created within the last 3 years, an artist statement, image list and CV. Sixth Annual Clifton, VA Plein Air Painting Festival and Competition (VA)

Deadline: May 15. Please accept our invitation to paint and compete, en plein air, in historic Clifton, VA on May 16-19, 2019. (rain or shine). Sunny Art Center International Art Prize (UK)

Deadline: June 30.  The Sunny Art Prize is an international art competition hosted by Sunny Art Centre, London. This fine art award is a global platform, giving an opportunity to emerging and established artists to showcase their talents to a wider audience. King Street Gallery Call for Entry (MD)

Deadline: November 25. The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation Arts Center has a number of spaces available for mounting exhibitions that support the academic mission of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts. This open call is for our King Street Gallery, the largest exhibition space in the Cafritz Arts Center. This light filled, 1050 square foot gallery is in the main atrium of the building. Its prominent location, open design, and extremely high ceilings (30 feet+) make it a great venue for major exhibitions. While much of this gallery space is visible from the main lobby of the building, and through the windows that front onto the street, it does maintain gallery hours and is locked after hours. The gallery hours are Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.– 4 p.m. Exhibitions are generally scheduled a year in advance to complement the academic calendar. Exhibitions in the King Street Gallery are 4-5 weeks long, and emphasize two person or small group shows. Single artist applications may be paired with a complimentary artist or artists to better utilize the space. Curated proposals are encouraged. The Creativity Grant Program State of Maryland (MD)

The purpose of the Creativity Grant Program is to strengthen the vitality and sustainability of artists and small organizations to maintain a strong and stable arts infrastructure in the State of Maryland. Artist/Writers: Cover Art for Academic Medicine

Deadline: Rolling. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. Artist/Writers: Medicine and the Arts (MATA) Opportunity

Deadline: Rolling. This column is the journal’s longest-running feature. It is published on two facing pages. The left-hand page features an excerpt from literature, a poem, a photograph, etc. Literature excerpts generally run no more than 700 words and may include a very brief introduction as needed. The right-hand page presents an original commentary of about 900 words that explores the relevance of the artwork to the teaching, learning, and/or practice of medicine. Since submissions cannot be fully accepted for publication until Academic Medicine acquires permission to reprint literary excerpts or artworks (which often takes many months), authors should include all relevant information about the piece they are explicating (publisher, museum, dates, etc.) to enable staff editors to find and contact the copyright holder. The Awesome Foundation Accepting Applications for Art Projects

Deadline: Open. The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is a worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of “awesomeness in the universe.” Established in 2009, the foundation distributes $1,000 grants on a monthly basis to projects and their creators. The money is pooled from ten or more self-organizing “micro-trustees.” The chapters are autonomous and organized by the trustees around geographic areas or topics of interest. Call for Artists: Maryland Art Place Seeks Proposals for Rotating Exhibition Partnership with Baltimore’s Hotel Indigo (MD)

Deadline: Rolling. Maryland Art Place (MAP), in partnership with Hotel Indigo is pleased to announce an open ‘Call to Artists’. As an extension of MAP’s annual IMPACT public art partnership projects, MAP is working with Hotel Indigo to offer rotating exhibitions in Hotel indigo’s library and Poets Modern Cocktails and Eats. A Room of Her Own: Ann Pickett’s “The Exuberance of Life” intertwines figure and environment

With movement, mystery, and appetite for life, the work of painter Ann Pickett intertwines the figure with its environment in “The Exuberance of Life” in the gallery now through April 7.

Laid Back by Ann Pickett

Created by Pickett’s unique brushwork, the abstract forms that emerge from her work are vivacious and lush, evoking feminine figures in her exploration of landscapes and domestic scenes.

In Sedona, one of Pickett’s landscapes, the rocky hillside tumbles into the curved silhouette of a woman; a true meeting of figure and ground.

Filled with zest and light, her figures create rhythmic creatures, simultaneously emerging and retreating into the background. Affectionately calling the interior scenes “roomscapes,” Pickett’s figures find the perfect balance of eccentricity. Hearth becomes hipbone; a chair becomes a cheek. In Laid Back, the settee becomes the sitter.

A gestural painter, she works with acrylics, favoring their fast-drying nature that allows her to continually layer paint. “I need freshness and spontaneity,” she remarked. “I rarely mix my colors a second time.” Once unbottled, every shade becomes a unique moment in time, from apricot to rose, to her favorite Ann’s Blue.

Pickett also notes that much of her energy, encouragement, and motivation comes from her instructors and peers at The Art League school. “The classes keep me painting. It’s so inspiring. It’s a great community.”

Ann Pickett is an award-winning abstract painter based in McLean, Virginia. With a 25-year career in graphic design, Pickett began painting abstracts in 2005 and received the Shayna Heiman Simkin Award in 2015. Most recently, Pickett has been featured in Elan Magazine in March of 2018.

Soho Photography Special Exhibit

Monday, April 8- Sunday, May 6, 2019. The Art League presents this special exhibit of artwork created by the participants in Alexandria’s SOHO program (Space of Her Own – is a program where at-risk, 5th grade girls meet at The Art League for special hands-on, visual arts experiences led by practicing artists) groups. The inspiration for this photography project is in the pairing of life skills lessons taught at SOHO with individual artistic expression through traditional methods of photography. Art League instructors worked with the girls and their mentors to create candid photographs highlighting their connection with one another. The girls and their mentors then experienced the hands-on production of the photos through darkroom technology. FREE!

April Mixed Media Member Exhibit

April 9 – May 5. Juried by Lavar Munroe. April’s exhibit will consist of Mixed Media work, referring to artworks composed from a combination of different media or materials.  This exhibit will run concurrently with SOHO’s Photography Exhibit, and Megan Partridge’s “Bugs” solo exhibit. FREE!

Pick an April Workshop to whet your appetite:
  • Jumpstart in Hand Stitching taught by Julie Booth: Join Julie for three consecutive Wednesday nights for making art with needle and thread. $140.
  • Expressing the Story taught by Kirstin Stingle: This hands-on workshop, Kirsten will lead students in building a small torso and exploring the figure as a vehicle for storytelling. Each student will build an approximately 12″ tall torso. Anatomy and proportion will be reviewed as well as the importance of using gesture, expression and found objects as narrative tools. Individual attention and problem solving will be emphasized. $200
  •  Raku Firing taught by David Flohr: Experience the Raku firing process (Raku firing is an incredible ancient Japanese ceramics technique) and learn about its vibrant possibilities in this one day workshop. $95
  • Upcycling Techniques in Felt taught by Renate Maile-Moscowitz: Want to be more green this Spring? Even the smallest scraps left over from previous projects of felted fiver scraps, yarns, and fabric remnants can successfully be made into new projects using an array of felting techniques. Students create a sampler of techniques that may become your next interchangeable bag flap, pocket or mats. $120.
  • Weekend in the Plein Air Landscape taught by Mike Francis: This workshop, spread over two afternoon painting sessions, meets along the Potomac in Alexandria. Artists of all media are welcome for plein air demos, critiques, and discussing plein air materials and techniques. $100.

Arlington Arts Center’s 2019 Regional Biennial (VA)

Deadline: March 25. Arlington Arts Center is pleased to announce a call for submissions for a new regional biennial, which will take place for the first time in the fall of 2019. Featuring work by artists from across the Mid-Atlantic, the exhibition will explore current material and conceptual trends with a focus on work that addresses the concerns of the present moment, whether political, cultural, personal, economic, artistic, or all of the above. The exhibition and accompanying programming will include artists at various stages of their careers, with an eye towards exhibiting work by young and emerging artists alongside groundbreaking new work by artists with longstanding connections to the region and its art scenes. Call For Art: Light vs. Dark – National Exhibition Juried – MA

Deadline: March 31. Gallery 263’s upcoming national juried exhibition Light vs. Dark invites artists working in any media to submit their interpretations of either subject. Light and dark may not only refer to artwork visually, but could also be depicted in the content of the work itself. 89th Annual Juried Open Exhibition (NY)

Deadline: April 5. The National Art League in Douglaston, NY announces a call to artists for a juried art exhibition, May 6 – June 1, 2019. Over $2,000 in Awards – First Place: $500. Juror: Mitchell Goldberg – Gallery Director at the Upstream Gallery, NY. Open to all artists 18 years of age or older, working in all traditional and non-traditional 2D and 3D media, including sculpture. All artwork must be original in concept, design and execution. Photography, film, video, computer art, reproductions (such as giclee, prints) are not acceptable unless part of a mixed media artwork or collage. Installation art or performance art are not accepted. No crafts (such as jewelry) or kit work. No artwork previously exhibited at NAL. Biennial 30: Call for Entries (IN)

Deadline: April 14. The South Bend Museum of Art’s all media Biennial 30 will present a diverse look into contemporary artwork in the Midwest and is open to all artists residing in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin. The number of exhibiting artists is deliberately limited to allow for the showing of a greater body of work by each artist. This year’s exhibition will be juried by Sarah Rose Sharp, a Detroit-based writer (Art in America, Hyperallergic, Flash Art, Sculpture Magazine, ArtSlant and others), activist, and multimedia artist. $1,500 in awards will be selected by the juror and $1,500 in purchase awards will be chosen by the South Bend Museum of Art’s Collections Committee. The  US Mint Basketball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin Design Competition (Nationwide)

Deadline: April 15. The United States Mint invites artists from across the country to participate in the Basketball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin Design Competition. Public Law 115-343 authorizes the Secretary of the Treasury to mint and issue domed $5 gold coins, domed $1 silver coins, and domed half-dollar clad coins, in recognition of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.  Dedicated to the creator of the game, Dr. James Naismith, and located in Springfield, Massachusetts, where the game was first played, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is recognized on a global scale as the institution that records and shares the history of basketball, including its greatest players, coaches and contributors. Sixth Annual Clifton, VA Plein Air Painting Festival and Competition (VA)

Deadline: May 15. Please accept our invitation to paint and compete, en plein air, in historic Clifton, VA on May 16-19, 2019. (rain or shine). We have a special setting that includes historic homes and a barn, beautiful gardens, gazebo in the park, winding lanes and a winding creek, lakeside home, a railroad crossing with caboose, and a donkey named “jackpot.”  In Clifton, a small, one square mile town, you don’t have to go far to find a quaintness waiting to be painted and interpreted with your inspiration. Gallery Underground’s next National Juried Show: RISK (VA)

Deadline: March 22. Gallery Underground invites artists working in all media to submit works depicting or representing risk. These can take the form of either literal depictions of taking risks, or more figurative demonstrations of the artist’s personal  risk-taking in their subject matter, medium or technique. For this exhibition, artists will submit a paragraph explaining how their submitted works represent the theme; these paragraphs will be displayed next to each accepted piece. 2019 Biennale National Juried Exhibition (SC)

Deadline: March 22.  Art League of Hilton Head invites you to enter the 2019 Biennale, its 26th National Juried Exhibition, held every other year across multiple media types. Over $5000 in cash prizes will be awarded. All works of art selected by jurors will be on display at Art League Gallery in the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. This state of the art gallery provides the finest exhibit space with high tourist and community visibility. The 2019 Biennale judge is internationally known, award winning artist Alan Flattmann of New Orleans. His book The Art of Pastel Painting is widely considered the definitive guide to pastel. Categories include oil, acrylic, watermedia, mixed media, pastel, photography, drawing, and three -dimensional art. All work must be original and completed within the last three years. Deadline: March 25. Main Street Arts in Clifton Springs, NY seeks entries for a juried art exhibition, May 25 – June 28, 2019. $1,000 in cash awards. Best in Show receives $500. Juror: Margot Muto, head of exhibitions at Memorial Art Gallery, Rochester, NY. This is a national exhibition with a focus on things decomposing, being in a state of decay, deconstructed, or paired down. Art Enables “Limitation:Liberation” Open Call (DC)

Deadline: March 31. Art Enables presents “Limitation:LIberation” Open Call for artists. Open to artists living in D.C., Maryland, or Virginia. Work should be made within the last 5 years by an artist who lives or works in D.C., Maryland, or Virginia and work should consist of a limited cool palette or limited warm palette. Cool colors are defined as Red-Violet, Violet, Blue-Violet, Blue, Blue-Green, and Green. Warm colors are defined as Red, Red-Orange, Orange, Yellow-Orange, Yellow, and Yellow-Green. Art on the Avenue Call for Artists (VA)

Deadline: April 1 (preferred), rolling. Art on the Avenue is  a multicultural arts and music festival organized by the Del Ray Community Partnership, and hosted by the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria. The show welcomes applications from all craft artists, and is known for high quality artwork in a friendly, neighborhood atmosphere. Applications mailed by April 1st have the best chance of being accepted into the show. However, we continue to accept applications after April 1st until all spaces have been filled. The fee for 2019 is $200 for applications postmarked before April 1st, $225 after April 1st. Acceptance is NOT guaranteed for returning artists. The number of artists in each category will be limited to ensure a balanced distribution of art forms. Call for Artists: ‘UN/Sustainable’ – Stamp Gallery Exhibition (MD)

Deadline: April 1.  In recent years there has been a resurgence of concern about sustainability as the world confronts and reacts to the ramifications of decisions, past and present. The impending environmental realities of the future give birth to revolutionary conversation and oftentimes protest. Artists sit at the forefront of these movements, using their stories to open the eyes of viewers and reflect upon their own relationships to the physical world. A lack of concern for the earth, and more widely the cultures and peoples that so heavily rely on nature, reflects larger structures of power at play and forces questions about our collective priorities. UN/Sustainable will examine these priorities through contemporary works that critically interact in bold and creative ways with the artist’s experience of the physical world and its future. The exhibition will feature a range of media and will seek to include art that asks: what is the role of sustainability in the art world? What is an artist’s responsibility to the environment in art creation? In documentation? In protest? Can art play a role in sustaining the earth or is it merely reflection on the issues?  How do culture and larger power structures affect environmental action and opinion? Propose an exhibition at UMW Galleries (VA)

Deadline: April 1. The UMW Galleries accept proposals from professional artists and curators for solo and group exhibitions for each of our gallery spaces (Ridderhof Martin Gallery and duPont Gallery). Proposals should be submitted via the UMW Galleries submittable form.  Deadlines: Proposals are accepted year round, but are collected for review on November 1 and April 1. Any applications received after the deadline will automatically be considered for the following deadline. Notification will be given via email within a year of submission. Include the following attachments in your submission: A description of the proposed exhibition. An artist’s statement or curatorial statement. Artist/ curator current resume or CV. Three to five images that are indicative of the work to be exhibited.

Del Ray Art on the Avenue (VA)

Deadline: April 1, rolling. Art on the Avenue is a multicultural arts and music festival organized by the Del Ray Community Partnership, and hosted by the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria. The show welcomes applications from all craft artists, and is known for high quality artwork in a friendly, neighborhood atmosphere. Art on the Avenue is a juried show and all work must be original, handmade, created and exhibited by the approved artist. The LUX Center for the Arts: 2019-2020 Residencies (NE)

Deadline: April 4. The LUX Center for the Arts in Lincoln, Nebraska is currently accepting applications for 2019-2020 year long residencies in all media. A strong desire to teach is required. Artists with more than one area of expertise and an MFA are preferred. This residency can be extended an additional year if both the LUX and the artist agree. All residents receive free studio space (shared or private depending on medium and space available) and 24-hour access and use of equipment in the studio area to which they applied. Ceramics residents have access to regularly stocked clay and glaze materials and use of kilns in exchange for studio maintenance duties. All residents can buy materials from the LUX at cost.Residents have priority for paid, on-site teaching opportunities including community art classes for youth and adults. Residents with an MFA or BFA in painting, ceramics, or metalsmithing have the opportunity to teach college art classes for Doane College-Lincoln campus, held at the LUX. Contemporary South 2019 Call-For-Art (NC)

Deadline: April 6. VAE’s Contemporary South (CoSo) exhibit showcases what the South is currently thinking, discussing, and making work about. In one of our most popular annual calls VAE is looking for entries of recent art made by artists currently working in the following 11 states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. Rochester Contemporary Art Center 6x6x2019 – The International Small Art Phenomenon (NY)

Deadline: April 14. What brings together artists from all over the world of all different skill levels? Rochester Contemporary Art Center (RoCo) is a venue for the exchange of ideas and a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) that was founded in 1977. Sweetwater Center for the Arts: Call for Solo Exhibition (PA)

Deadline: May 1. Sweetwater invites emerging and established artists who reside within 200 miles of Pittsburgh, PA to submit artwork for an opportunity to have a 5-week solo exhibition at Sweetwater. Open to artist working in all 2D and 3D media, film/video not accepted. Submit 10 images of artwork created within the last 3 years, an artist statement, image list and CV. Sunny Art Center International Art Prize (UK)

Deadline: June 30.  The Sunny Art Prize is an international art competition hosted by Sunny Art Centre, London. This fine art award is a global platform, giving an opportunity to emerging and established artists to showcase their talents to a wider audience. We aim to display artistic and cultural diversity to the international art scenes of London, Beijing, Guangzhou and Macau. Sunny Art Award will promote an exchange in creativity between Western and Eastern cultures. We are looking for a variety of submissions which can range from two-dimensional works such as paintings, drawings and photographs, to three-dimensional sculptures, and ceramics. King Street Gallery Call for Entry (MD)

Deadline: November 25. The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation Arts Center has a number of spaces available for mounting exhibitions that support the academic mission of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts. This open call is for our King Street Gallery, the largest exhibition space in the Cafritz Arts Center. This light filled, 1050 square foot gallery is in the main atrium of the building. Its prominent location, open design, and extremely high ceilings (30 feet+) make it a great venue for major exhibitions. While much of this gallery space is visible from the main lobby of the building, and through the windows that front onto the street, it does maintain gallery hours and is locked after hours. The gallery hours are Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.– 4 p.m. Exhibitions are generally scheduled a year in advance to complement the academic calendar. Exhibitions in the King Street Gallery are 4-5 weeks long, and emphasize two person or small group shows. Single artist applications may be paired with a complimentary artist or artists to better utilize the space. Curated proposals are encouraged. The purpose of the Creativity Grant Program is to strengthen the vitality and sustainability of artists and small organizations to maintain a strong and stable arts infrastructure in the State of Maryland. The Creativity Grant also provides opportunities to serve the growing needs of relevant arts projects and collaborations within Maryland communities. Artist/Writers: Cover Art for Academic Medicine

Deadline: Rolling. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. Artist/Writers: Medicine and the Arts (MATA) Opportunity

Deadline: Rolling. This column is the journal’s longest-running feature. It is published on two facing pages. The left-hand page features an excerpt from literature, a poem, a photograph, etc. Literature excerpts generally run no more than 700 words and may include a very brief introduction as needed. The right-hand page presents an original commentary of about 900 words that explores the relevance of the artwork to the teaching, learning, and/or practice of medicine. Since submissions cannot be fully accepted for publication until Academic Medicine acquires permission to reprint literary excerpts or artworks (which often takes many months), authors should include all relevant information about the piece they are explicating (publisher, museum, dates, etc.) to enable staff editors to find and contact the copyright holder. The Awesome Foundation Accepting Applications for Art Projects

Deadline: Open. The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is a worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of “awesomeness in the universe.” Established in 2009, the foundation distributes $1,000 grants on a monthly basis to projects and their creators. The money is pooled from ten or more self-organizing “micro-trustees.” The chapters are autonomous and organized by the trustees around geographic areas or topics of interest. Call for Artists: Maryland Art Place Seeks Proposals for Rotating Exhibition Partnership with Baltimore’s Hotel Indigo (MD)

Deadline: rolling. Maryland Art Place (MAP), in partnership with Hotel Indigo is pleased to announce an open ‘Call to Artists’. As an extension of MAP’s annual IMPACT public art partnership projects, MAP is working with Hotel Indigo to offer rotating exhibitions in Hotel indigo’s library and Poets Modern Cocktails and Eats. This opportunity is available to visual artists living or working in Maryland. Maryland Art Place will curate four exhibitions a year based on submissions entered through a rolling basis. Peripheral ARTeries – Biennial Contemporary Art Publication

The Wine: Brut Rose is a blend of Pinot Noir and Grenache. The hint of color is obtained from a brief maceration of the musk with the skins. Bright with a gorgeous glow in the glass and a silky mouthfeel. On the palate, it is fruity with notes of blackberries and strawberry cheesecake, but clean, dry and perfectly rounded. The fine bubbles lead to an elegant, crisp finish.

Artwork Suggestion: The unique elegance of this wine matches the conceptual timelessness of this diamond cuff by Gretchen Raber. 

Chardonnay

The wine: Aromas of white fruit blossoms and light citrus precede flavors of Forelle pear, vanilla and a hint of ginger. Soft and complex floral notes with flavors of pear, guava, and lychee. The toasted honey-oat and buttery finish denote French Oak. Pairs nicely with buttered herb roasted lobster and Caesar salad. A lovely choice with seafood and mildly spiced Asian dishes. It is ready to drink now or enjoy after a few years of proper cellaring.

Cabernet Sauvignon (California)

The wine: This Cabernet Sauvignon has beautiful scents of rose petal, cocoa, dark cherry, leather, tobacco, vanilla, clove, anise, and raspberry that float from the dark, inky, body. The tannins are all-encompassing, along with vibrant acidity, work towards perfect balance and finesse. The long finish is marked by a touch of dark chocolate and caramel which provide a perfect balance. This is a Cabernet built for the long haul, best enjoyed after decanting or 5-15 years in the cellar.

Artwork Suggestion: This piece by Danni Dawson, reflects this wine…as well as the recipe for a perfect marriage: balance and built for the long-haul.

Tempranillo

The Wine: Get ready for an explosion of aromas with this Tempranillo from Spain. Powerful and complex.  Tasting notes of very ripe red and black fruits and spicy background of coffee, toffee and licorice. Broad, fleshy, well structured with good balance between compote ripe fruit and excellent oaks. Finishes sweet with a lot of persistence.

Artwork Suggestion: The persistence and power of this canyon scene by Ted Reed perfectly reflects this powerful and complex Tempranillo.

Cabernet Sauvignon (South Africa)

The Wine: Deep and opaque violet in color, the nose is all dark fruits. In your mouth, there is an incredible journey of eucalyptus, green pepper, cranberry, blackcurrant and cassis plus touches of cinnamon, violet and green pepper. This is a smooth and polished journey, livened by a gentle acidity and spice in the finish that goes on and leaves you wanting more.

Artwork Suggestion: The figure in this work by Tania Karpowitz shows a man who has also been on a journey, as he stares back at the viewer. 

Priorat

The Wine: This Spanish wine is a blend of Garnacha Blanca and Macabeu, expressing the terroir of the Priorat. Full of minerality and velvety richness. A mediterranean white wine—dry, complex with full body, and, at the same time, a very well integrated acidity, making it very refreshing and pleasant. Bright straw yellow in the glass. The wine is fermented in new French oak barrels for 90 days. After, sur lie aging in stainless steel tanks for 4 months. The wine is then filtered and bottled and kept in our cellar for 10 months.

Art Suggestion: This gravity sculpture, by Ryan Rakhshan, reflects the complexity and artistry of this fine wine.

Here at The Art League we are surrounded by artists every day. We love when our gallery is renewed every month with a new set of beautiful artwork. However, you don’t have to work at The Art League to have access to the great exhibiting artists that show month after month in our gallery. If you’re anything like us, and have wondered why your favorite artists choose a certain medium, subject, or take on a piece…this is your chance!

Join exhibiting artists featured in the March “Open” exhibit for an exciting round of 5-Minute Artist Talks. Artists will talk about their process, the background behind their piece, and take questions from onlookers. April Mixed Media Exhibit- The Art League (VA)

Deadline: March 15. Exhibit dates: April 9, 2019 – May 5, 2019. Juried by Lavar Munroe   

April’s exhibit will consist of Mixed Media work, referring to artworks composed from a combination of different media or materials. Artists are free to enter any current mixed media work made within 5 years. Guidelines/restrictions:

  • Artist must be a current exhibiting artist member of The Art League gallery.
  • All works must adhere to the Gallery hanging and framing requirements. For 2D artworks, no clip frames are permitted and hanging wire must be attached to the frame, not the backing. 2D artworks must have hanging wire. No saw tooth hangers permitted. Canvases may be gallery wrapped with no visible staples.
  • If the work weighs over 60lbs, the artist must install the piece themselves, if accepted.
  • Artists are free to enter any current work made within 5 years.

Art on the Avenue Call for Artists (VA)

Deadline: April 1 (preferred), rolling. Art on the Avenue is  a multicultural arts and music festival organized by the Del Ray Community Partnership, and hosted by the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria. The show welcomes applications from all craft artists, and is known for high quality artwork in a friendly, neighborhood atmosphere. Applications mailed by April 1st have the best chance of being accepted into the show. However, we continue to accept applications after April 1st until all spaces have been filled. The fee for 2019 is $200 for applications postmarked before April 1st, $225 after April 1st. Acceptance is NOT guaranteed for returning artists. The number of artists in each category will be limited to ensure a balanced distribution of art forms. 34th Annual Chelsea International Fine Art Competition (NY)

This year’s Chelsea International Fine Art Competition awards offer participating artists a wide range of opportunities and prizes specifically chosen to promote the selected artists and enhance their careers. Artist Residency: Visual Arts Department at Montgomery College (MD)

Deadline: March 15. The Visual Arts Department at Montgomery College, Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus, is pleased to announce the following opportunities for emerging and established artists. Their exhibitions spaces and Artist in Residence studio are all located in the beautiful Cafritz Foundation Arts Center, located just outside of DC at 930 King Street, Silver Spring MD. Both applications are submitted via JotForm links available on the department website. Gallery Underground’s next National Juried Show: RISK (VA)

Deadline: March 22. Gallery Underground invites artists working in all media to submit works depicting or representing risk. These can take the form of either literal depictions of taking risks, or more figurative demonstrations of the artist’s personal  risk-taking in their subject matter, medium or technique. For this exhibition, artists will submit a paragraph explaining how their submitted works represent the theme; these paragraphs will be displayed next to each accepted piece. 2019 Biennale National Juried Exhibition (SC)

Deadline: March 22.  Art League of Hilton Head invites you to enter the 2019 Biennale, its 26th National Juried Exhibition, held every other year across multiple media types. Over $5000 in cash prizes will be awarded. All works of art selected by jurors will be on display at Art League Gallery in the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. This state of the art gallery provides the finest exhibit space with high tourist and community visibility. The 2019 Biennale judge is internationally known, award winning artist Alan Flattmann of New Orleans. His book The Art of Pastel Painting is widely considered the definitive guide to pastel. Categories include oil, acrylic, watermedia, mixed media, pastel, photography, drawing, and three -dimensional art. All work must be original and completed within the last three years. Deadline: March 25. Main Street Arts in Clifton Springs, NY seeks entries for a juried art exhibition, May 25 – June 28, 2019. $1,000 in cash awards. Best in Show receives $500. Juror: Margot Muto, head of exhibitions at Memorial Art Gallery, Rochester, NY. This is a national exhibition with a focus on things decomposing, being in a state of decay, deconstructed, or paired down. Both the conceptual side as well as technical/ compositional side of the theme will be encouraged. Open to artists working in all media who are U.S. residents at least 18 years of age. $30 for up to 3 submissions, $35 for 4 to 6 submissions. Deadline: March 31. Art Enables presents “Limitation:LIberation” Open Call for artists. Open to artists living in D.C., Maryland, or Virginia. Call for Artists: ‘UN/Sustainable’ – Stamp Gallery Exhibition (MD)

Deadline: April 1.  In recent years there has been a resurgence of concern about sustainability as the world confronts and reacts to the ramifications of decisions, past and present. The impending environmental realities of the future give birth to revolutionary conversation and oftentimes protest. Artists sit at the forefront of these movements, using their stories to open the eyes of viewers and reflect upon their own relationships to the physical world. A lack of concern for the earth, and more widely the cultures and peoples that so heavily rely on nature, reflects larger structures of power at play and forces questions about our collective priorities. UN/Sustainable will examine these priorities through contemporary works that critically interact in bold and creative ways with the artist’s experience of the physical world and its future. The exhibition will feature a range of media and will seek to include art that asks: what is the role of sustainability in the art world? What is an artist’s responsibility to the environment in art creation? In documentation? In protest? Can art play a role in sustaining the earth or is it merely reflection on the issues?  How do culture and larger power structures affect environmental action and opinion? Propose an exhibition at UMW Galleries (VA)

Deadline: April 1. The UMW Galleries accept proposals from professional artists and curators for solo and group exhibitions for each of our gallery spaces (Ridderhof Martin Gallery and duPont Gallery). Proposals should be submitted via the UMW Galleries submittable form.  Deadlines: Proposals are accepted year round, but are collected for review on November 1 and April 1. Any applications received after the deadline will automatically be considered for the following deadline. Notification will be given via email within a year of submission. Del Ray Art on the Avenue (VA)

Deadline: April 1, rolling. Art on the Avenue is a multicultural arts and music festival organized by the Del Ray Community Partnership, and hosted by the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria. The show welcomes applications from all craft artists, and is known for high quality artwork in a friendly, neighborhood atmosphere. The LUX Center for the Arts: 2019-2020 Residencies (NE)

Deadline: April 4. The LUX Center for the Arts in Lincoln, Nebraska is currently accepting applications for 2019-2020 year long residencies in all media. A strong desire to teach is required. Artists with more than one area of expertise and an MFA are preferred. This residency can be extended an additional year if both the LUX and the artist agree. All residents receive free studio space (shared or private depending on medium and space available) and 24-hour access and use of equipment in the studio area to which they applied. Ceramics residents have access to regularly stocked clay and glaze materials and use of kilns in exchange for studio maintenance duties. All residents can buy materials from the LUX at cost.Residents have priority for paid, on-site teaching opportunities including community art classes for youth and adults. Residents with an MFA or BFA in painting, ceramics, or metalsmithing have the opportunity to teach college art classes for Doane College-Lincoln campus, held at the LUX. Sunny Art Center International Art Prize (UK)

King Street Gallery Call for Entry (MD)

Deadline: November 25. The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation Arts Center has a number of spaces available for mounting exhibitions that support the academic mission of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts. This open call is for our King Street Gallery, the largest exhibition space in the Cafritz Arts Center. This light filled, 1050 square foot gallery is in the main atrium of the building. Its prominent location, open design, and extremely high ceilings (30 feet+) make it a great venue for major exhibitions. While much of this gallery space is visible from the main lobby of the building, and through the windows that front onto the street, it does maintain gallery hours and is locked after hours. The gallery hours are Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.– 4 p.m. Exhibitions are generally scheduled a year in advance to complement the academic calendar. Exhibitions in the King Street Gallery are 4-5 weeks long, and emphasize two person or small group shows. Single artist applications may be paired with a complimentary artist or artists to better utilize the space. Curated proposals are encouraged. Artist/Writers: Cover Art for Academic Medicine

Deadline: Rolling. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. Artist/Writers: Medicine and the Arts (MATA) Opportunity

Deadline: Rolling. This column is the journal’s longest-running feature. It is published on two facing pages. The left-hand page features an excerpt from literature, a poem, a photograph, etc. Literature excerpts generally run no more than 700 words and may include a very brief introduction as needed. The right-hand page presents an original commentary of about 900 words that explores the relevance of the artwork to the teaching, learning, and/or practice of medicine. Since submissions cannot be fully accepted for publication until Academic Medicine acquires permission to reprint literary excerpts or artworks (which often takes many months), authors should include all relevant information about the piece they are explicating (publisher, museum, dates, etc.) to enable staff editors to find and contact the copyright holder. The Awesome Foundation Accepting Applications for Art Projects

The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is a worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of “awesomeness in the universe.” Established in 2009, the foundation distributes $1,000 grants on a monthly basis to projects and their creators. The money is pooled from ten or more self-organizing “micro-trustees.” The chapters are autonomous and organized by the trustees around geographic areas or topics of interest. Call for Artists: Maryland Art Place Seeks Proposals for Rotating Exhibition Partnership with Baltimore’s Hotel Indigo (MD)
