After a seven-year absence, Artomatic, the peripatetic DMV art festival, returned to D.C. this past March. There’s a lot to see in this sprawling show which takes up eight floors of space in an empty Foggy Bottom office building. A big part of what makes Artomatic unique is that it is not a curated, so there is an wide array of creative expression, from traditional fine art to conceptual installations, on view.
We are thrilled to see works by several of our artists and faculty in Artomatic! Here is a roundup of who they are and what they are exhibiting. We encourage you to see for yourself before it closes this Sunday, April 28.

Pattee Hipschen is showing large and small artworks inside a former office that she, like some of the other participating artists, transformed into a solo gallery. Find her on the second floor in Room #225.

Susan O’Neill is among several artists exhibiting in an expansive, open space on the third floor, which provides ample room for her large-scale Jazz series. She is on the third floor, Installation Space #336.

It was great to see works by Jeff Tackes at Artomatic, including the illuminating Newborn Nightmare that appeared in our recent Student/Faculty Show—and sold! He is on the eighth floor, Installation Space #831.

Also in Room #6030 on the sixth floor, The Art League’s own Michael Price—aka The Wired Mike— is exhibiting his cool and clever assortment of wire art. He even got a mention in Daily Campello Art News, where art critic Lenny Campello raved, “These are not only intelligently designed, some kinetic, works of art, but also work to fool the eye as paintings!”

Diverse artworks by member artists are the feature of Open Exhibits at The Art League. This month, 99 artworks—painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, fiber art, ceramics, and mixed media—are on view. The April 2024 Open Exhibit was juried by Margaret Winslow, Head Curator and Curator of Contemporary Art at the Delaware Art Museum, and is on view in The Art League Gallery through May 5.

In her solo exhibit, And Sew it Goes, Susan J. Lapham displays a collection of large-scale sewn collages, playfully constructed from dozens of small bits of fabric. Inspired by eclectic architecture, complex machinery, and outlandish arrangements, her work pushes the limits of balance, proportion, and symmetry to evoke delight, humor and joy within its viewers. And Sew It Goes is on veiw in The Art League Gallery through May 5.

Peculiar Things by Japhet Chukwuma; Photography
VisArts presents NextGen 11.0, a juried group exhibition that showcases next generation aspiring artists, ages 17 to 27, from the Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC area. The annual exhibition offers young artists who have little to no exhibition record the opportunity to bring their work to a wider audience. This year’s exhibit features eight artists whose works include painting, photography, sculpture, and installation art. It is on view through May 12 in VisArts Gibbs Gallery; 155 Gibbs Street

THERE AND BACK reflects Maureen’s ceaseless desire to explore the beauty inherent in solitude. Shakespeare’s Garden
Shakespeare’s Garden, an immersive installation at Target Gallery.
Meander through Shakespeare’s Gardento experience his works through immersive imagery and soundscapes. Explore the garden’s multiple layers of rich sound through ambient garden soundscapes, and step into the texts of Shakespeare to hear recordings of his sonnets, soliloquies, and scenes reimagined and performed by Virginia Tech students. Shakespeare’s Garden is presented by Virginia Tech’s Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology (ICAT) and the City of Alexandria’s Office of the Arts. Learn how it was created here.

Artist/Writers: Cover Art for Academic Medicine
Deadline: Rolling. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. The Awesome Foundation Accepting Applications for Art Projects
Deadline: Open. The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is a worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of “awesomeness in the universe.” Established in 2009, the foundation distributes $1,000 grants on a monthly basis to projects and their creators. The money is pooled from ten or more self-organizing “micro-trustees.” The chapters are autonomous and organized by the trustees around geographic areas or topics of interest. Diverse artworks by member artists are the feature of Open Exhibits at The Art League. This month, 99 artworks—painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, fiber art, ceramics, and mixed media—are on view. The April 2024 Open Exhibit was juried by Margaret Winslow, Head Curator and Curator of Contemporary Art at the Delaware Art Museum, and is on view in The Art League Gallery through May 6.

In her solo exhibit, And Sew it Goes, Susan J. Lapham displays a collection of large-scale sewn collages, playfully constructed from dozens of small bits of fabric. Inspired by eclectic architecture, complex machinery, and outlandish arrangements, her work pushes the limits of balance, proportion, and symmetry to evoke delight, humor and joy within its viewers. And Sew It Goes is on veiw in The Art League Gallery through May 6.
Blooms and Brushstrokes: The Language of Flowers

Modern artists have long used flowers as a means of exploring color, form and emotion. Whether depicted in representational or abstract form, flowers offer endless possibilities for artistic expression. From the geometric to the gestural, Blossoms and Brushstrokes: The Language of Flowers, an exclusive online show presented Bethesda Fine Art, explores floral forms by modern artists of the last century. It’s on view through May 29.
National Building Museum BIG DRAW
The National Building Museum hosts BIG DRAW, a free day-long festival that invites visitors to discover the world we design and build through drawing on Saturday, Aprill 20 from 10 a.m.–4 p.m. The event is a complement to the Museum’s recently opened long-term exhibition Building Stories that explores the world of architecture, engineering, construction, and design through the lens of children’s books. Caldecott Medal award-winning author and illustrator David Macaulay, who has a special gallery within Building Stories, will engage with visitors and will lead two drawing workshops using the Museum’s historic home to teach visitors how to understand scale and perspective. Throughout this day of drawing, visitors of all ages can engage in quick drawing prompts, contribute to a community mural, contribute to Positive Chalk’s “Chalk Walk,” and attend lightning talks with engineering, architecture, and design professionals who will share how drawing is used as a tool to create. Visitors are welcome to bring their own sketchbooks or use materials provided by the Museum. BIG DRAW is free with registration—register here. Springtime in Maryland by Archa Malhotra
In the spirit of Celebrate Diversity Month, this art exhibit highlights the beauty and richness of diversity through artists’ interpretations of the concept Same But Different. This Del Ray Artisans members showcase explores notions of identity, distinctions and similarities in our natural and manmade world. Through a variety of mediums, styles, and perspectives, the Same But Different exhibit, at Del Ray Artisans Gallery, invites the viewers to look at the interconnectedness of humanity by examining the uniqueness of things that may appear to be the same. Call to Artists, Frye Island Artist Residency — Frye Island, ME
Deadline: April 20 Frye Island in Maine is introducing an Artist-–in–Residence program this year. The program’s goal is to provide an artist a week on Frye Island in exchange for sharing their art with the island community. The program provides one week of housing for the selected artist on our island and a $500 stipend in exchange for them volunteering some time to the Frye Island community. The hope is that the artist’s time on the island, and in the community, will allow them to step away from their normal routine and perspective. The ideal candidate is not someone looking for an “artists retreat”, but rather someone who would enjoy working on their art while engaging with our island community. Deadline: May 1 Washington Project for the Arts (WPA) has received support from the DCCAH to develop a new digital archive, which will launch in January 2025, kicking off our 50th Anniversary celebrations. Artist/Writers: Cover Art for Academic Medicine
Deadline: Rolling. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. The Awesome Foundation Accepting Applications for Art Projects

The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is a worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of “awesomeness in the universe.” Established in 2009, the foundation distributes $1,000 grants on a monthly basis to projects and their creators. Inner Gardens: Works by Abol Bahadori
Undercurrent by Abol Bahadori; Mixed media
Abol Bahadori has won accolades in recent Art League exhibits for his striking, multi-layered, mixed media abstracts. Now, paintings from his Architectural and Perspective series are featured in Inner Gardens, part of the Spring Solos exhibition at McLean Project for the Arts (MPA).
Abol describes the paintings in his exhibit as an interplay between artificial and natural, solid and fluid, geometrical and organic, and abstract versus real. “I explore the space between the recognizable and unfamiliar, unveiling the unknown or forgotten. I am honored to be selected by the McLean Project for the Arts for this show.”
MPA is hosting an artist talk with Abol and fellow Spring Solos artists Osvaldo Mesa and Laura Grothaus on Saturday, June 1 at 11 a.m., and a Tea & Talk on Tuesday, June 4, at 11 a.m. Inner Gardens is on view through June 15; 1234 Ingleside Avenue, McLean, Virginia.

Self-taught photographer Claire Wright believes places are primarily experienced, and the best pictures are taken in familiar places that are truly known. A place can be a memory, a feeling, a physical experience; and the image created is an effort to convey these feelings or experiences. Photographs in Secret Places, Wright’s solo show at Washington Printmakers Gallery, weaves the macro and the micro, the static and dynamic, the cold and the warm to represent a special place, special in a personal sense. Abed Elmajid Shalabi: When Tomorrow Arrives We Will Love Life

Hamiltonian Artists presents Abed Elmajid Shalabi’s solo exhibition When Tomorrow Arrives We Will Love Life. Titled after Mahmoud Darwish’s poem A State of Siege (2002), this solo exhibition will present new and recent sculptural works that confront the realities of the post-oil Arab world and lean into the question of the future.
Shalabi’s material vernacular ranges from fragile ceramics to commercial concrete. Castings of vehicular and industrial objects, like construction truck seats, gas pumps, shock-resistant rubber mats, and truck beds function as emotional provocations—interrogating the illusions of progress, safety, and direction that have been prescribed by the Western gaze. By exposing surface cracks, emptiness, and other moments of vulnerability, Shalabi pushes against the speed of modernity and the ways in which its false promises alter our connection to the body, gender, and self.

Diverse artworks by member artists are the feature of Open Exhibits at The Art League. This month, 99 artworks—painting, drawing, photography, fiber art, ceramics, and mixed media—are on view. The March Open Exhibit was juried by artist Juliette Colas, and is on view through April 7.

March solo artist Alyse Radenovic employs multifold vertical lines in an array of colors for the 11 works featured in her solo exhibit Lines in Color. Each painting is an elaborate yet streamlined nexus of consonant and dissonant color combinations, creating harmonious statements from the interconnection of disparate hues. Each composition is a rich and unified tapestry, at once dynamic and serene. Lines of Color is on view through April 7.

After a seven-year absence, Artomatic, the peripatetic, DMV art festival is back! Best of all, Art League members and instructors—Pattee Hipschen, Jane Johnson, Dale McGrath, Andrea Cybyk, Peri Turns, Lisa Laohaphan, Audra Meckstroth, Michael Price, Susan O’Neill, and Jeff Tackes—are exhibiting in this sprawling, one-of-a-kind art show. In addition to the art on view, there is a roster of of interactive and immersive events to check out. Artomatic is open Wednesdays–Thursdays, 5–9:30 p.m.; Fridays–Saturdays, 12 noon–12:00 midnight; and Sunday, 12–9 p.m. through April 28 at 2100 M Street NW in Foggy Bottom.
Stained Glass: An Artist’s Demonstration with Jimmy Powers

Capital Art Book Fair

The second edition of East City Art’s Capital Art Book Fairtakes place this weekend at Eastern Market’s North Hall. The event is open to the public, free of charge. Thirty-six exhibitors from across the DMV, the US, Asia and Europe will present books as works of art, editions about art or artists, limited run books, prints as well as DIY zines, graphic novels and art magazines. Over 100 fine artists, independent publishers, small presses, illustrators and photographers will be represented. It’s open Saturday, April 6, 11 a.m.–6 p.m., and Sunday, 10 a.m.—4 p.m., at Eastern Market’s North Hall at 225 7th Street SE, Washington D.C.

We’re particularly keen to recruit new hires for our sculpture, stained glass, and watercolor departments. The Alper Initiative for Washington Art features five exhibitions per year in the newly constructed first floor space in the American University Museum. Artist/Writers: Cover Art for Academic Medicine
Deadline: Rolling. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. The Awesome Foundation Accepting Applications for Art Projects

The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is a worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of “awesomeness in the universe.” Established in 2009, the foundation distributes $1,000 grants on a monthly basis to projects and their creators. The money is pooled from ten or more self-organizing “micro-trustees.” The chapters are autonomous and organized by the trustees around geographic areas or topics of interest. Artists works will displayed in the hotel’s gallery (220 S Union St, Old Town Alexandria) for a six-month period. Two-dimensional, framed works only. Artists will install the work using the hotel’s mounting hardware. Labels will be provided by the hotel. All sales handled by artist, no commission.
