Owl Chicks Nest in Woodpecker-made Hole by Joan Slottow

The Northern Saw-whet Owl is a small nocturnal owl that lives in the north woods.   They nest in tree cavities and old nests made by other birds.   Woodpeckers, with excellent cavity-cutting beaks,  make nests that they use for only a single season, leaving them available to others in future years.  I constructed the tree in this painting out of the springs that hold the artwork steady in the metal screw-together type frames that I use to frame my silkscreen prints.
