Call to Artists, A Show of Heads, Limner Gallery — Hudson, NY 

Deadline: August 31 SlowArt Productions presents the annual group thematic exhibition, A Show of Heads. The exhibition will be held at the Limner Gallery from November 16 – December 17, 2022. Open to all artists working in any media, this exhibition will include all interpretations and portrayals of the human head, from the traditional to the abstract and conceptual. Call for Submissions, Photography 4 Humanity 2022 Global Photo Contest 

Deadline: September 1 We are excited to announce that the 2022 Global Contest has turned its lens towards climate justice. We believe climate change is a human rights issue, so we are looking for images that show people impacted by the escalating climate crisis. They include climate refuges, the very young, the very old, the disabled and injured, the poor, indigenous and island people, and women. No Entry Fee.  

 

Call for Submissions, IMPRINT: An International Competitive Exhibit of Printmaking 

Deadline: September 3 The Cincinnati based non-profit arts organization and gallery, Manifest, invites visual artists and designers to submit works of printmaking, and will strive to explore the range of methods and results currently being achieved within the bounds of such processes. Call for Entry, PRIMARY COLORS International Juried Photography Competition 

Deadline: October 9. Red, Yellow, and Blue are the three basic paint colors an artist needs to create a world of color, yet each stands out on its own as an important visual element. This competition is about images in which one of these colors is a critical component. The New York Center for Photographic Arts (NYC4PA) invites photographers world-wide to submit images using any photographic process (print, image transfer, emulsion transfer, encaustic, black and white, etc.). Call for Entry, YOU EFF OH, Maryland Art Place — Baltimore

Deadline: August 31   Maryland Art Place (MAP) is proud to announce a call for submissions for a group show YOU EFF OH,  an exhibition that addresses what artists think about alien life and how this topic influences their practice. Open Call, Mind Maze Online Exhibition

Deadline: August 31   Applications are now open for our online exhibition Mind Maze. Labyrinths and mazes represent an age-old tension between fate and free will. The place with obvious entry and mysterious progression where you’re forced to lose yourself only to find yourself once again. We are looking for artworks themed around labyrinths, inner emotions, and faith. Artworks that are inspired by labyrinths and mazes in a literal or abstract way.  Click here for more information.

 

Call for Entry, The Changing Chesapeake: A Community Response Exhibition, St. Michaels, MD

Deadline: September 1   Although steeped in traditional culture, the Chesapeake long has been a place of change and evolution, and its history driven by response to that change. The Changing Chesapeake seeks submissions from students and adults alike, responding to changes they observe in the landscape and life around them. This is an open call for inclusion in an exhibition centered on community response to changes in the Chesapeake Bay region. Artists may be of any age, with no residency requirements. Call for Photography, 2022 International Alternative Processes — New York

Deadline: September 1   Soho Photo Gallery, New York’s longest running cooperative gallery, is excited to announce our 18th International Alternative Processes Competition. This year the Competition will return to the gallery, opening  on Wednesday, November 16 and closing on Saturday, December 3 2022.The opening reception is on Thursday, November 17th. Call for Muralist, Loudoun County Public Schools — Loudoun County, VA

Deadline: September 2   Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS), with the Loudoun County School Board-appointed Douglass High School Commemorative Committee (DHSCC), seeks submissions for the design, creation, and placement of a mural on the outside wall of the gym adjacent to the basketball court at the Historic Douglass High School. Renovation of the school campus is ongoing, and the identified area for the mural will be in a highly visible location, adjacent to an outdoor basketball court and historic themed community playground nearby. Call for Submissions, Reframing Recovery, VisArts Galleries — Rockville, MD

Deadline: September 2   September is National Recovery Month. VisArts invites individuals to submit photographs/images/designs/artworks that address the struggle of addiction, the process of recovery, portraits of those we have lost to addiction and portraits of those who’ve found a path forward through recovery. Submitted work will be reviewed for inclusion by VisArts’ Gallery Department and community partners. Selected work will be part of a five-night projected installation visible on the windows of VisArts’ Studio 156 beginning September 22, 2022. For more information, click here.

 

Call for Entries, Parallax – Women’s Photography Exhibition — Baltimore

Deadline: September 9   Gormley Gallery at Notre Dame of Maryland University in Baltimore invites submissions to Parallax – Women’s Photography Exhibition, a national competitive exhibition juried by Liz Faust. Photographs in any process are eligible, with no limitation as to size or materials. Each artist may submit up to five works online only. Costa Rica’s Hotel Belmar Artist Residency — Monteverde, Costa Rica

Deadline: September 10   Hotel Belmar, a leading eco-focused boutique hotel located in the cloud forest of Monteverde, Costa Rica, is launching an open call for its Artist Residency Program. Calls for Entry, Portraits by the People, Anacostia Community Museum — DC

Deadline: September 15   In celebration of the 55th anniversary of the Smithsonian’s Anacostia Community Museum, the museum is asking residents of Washington, D.C., to submit images of themselves and their communities to a new initiative, Portraits by the People. Select portrait submissions will be shown on the museum’s social media sites and as building projections during the museum’s 55th anniversary celebrations Sept. 15 from 6 to 8:30 p.m.  Submit portraits here.

 

Call for Artists, Fanciful Picnic Tables at Sandy Spring Museum — Sandy Spring, MD

Deadline: September 15   Serving as a gathering place for the community, Sandy Spring Museum is installing a series of picnic groves with fanciful picnic tables, most of which will be designed by Maryland artists. We are seeking proposals from artists who would like to be selected to design and build a table. Toward Equity in Publishing Professional Writing Development Program — DC

Deadline: September 15   Toward Equity in Publishing is a new initiative designed to remediate the inequitable conditions that precede and impede publication in the field of American art history. This professional development program is being launched by the peer-reviewed journal American Art, which is co-published by the Smithsonian American Art Museum and University of Chicago Press. It is open to applications from unpublished graduate students, untenured faculty, junior museum staff, and independent scholars who are producing research on American art history and related visual culture topics. International Human Rights Art Festival Logo Contest

Deadline: September 15   The International Human Rights Art Festival, evolving from our original one-week performance festival into an international movement, having worked with creators from 86 countries and 37 US States, is changing our name to the International Human Rights Art Movement! Innovative Grants for Artists + Photographers

Deadline: September 15   Innovate Grant awards (2) $550.00 grants each quarter, to one visual artist and one photographer. Hillyer Call for Exhibition Proposals: 2023-2024

Deadline: September 16    Hillyer is accepting proposals for exhibitions to take place between January and December 2023. Through this competitive selection process, accepted artists are awarded a month-long exhibition in one of our three gallery spaces. To learn more, click here.

 

2023 Open Call for a Solo Exhibition at Target Gallery — Alexandria, VA

Deadline: September 18   Torpedo Factory Art Center invites artists living in the DC-metropolitan region to submit a proposal for a solo exhibition in Target Gallery, the Art Center’s contemporary exhibition space. The artist with the chosen proposal will receive an exhibition in Target Gallery from April 22 – July 16, 2023. The artist will receive a $3,000 stipend for the opportunity to cover artists expenses. Call for Artists, 2022 Scenes in the City Plein Air Festival — Falls Church, VA

Deadline: September 24.  Falls Church Arts will hold its 12th annual Scenes in the City Plein Air Festival September 9-24. Artists will paint outdoors in Falls Church City, VA, from September 9 through 23. The Plein Air Festival competition and a Quick Draw event will be held on Saturday, September 24. Call for Artists, Carroll Gallery & Birke Gallery 2023 Season — Huntington, WV

Deadline: October 1   Marshall University’s School of Art & Design is seeking submissions from emerging to professional artists for solo and group shows in the Fall Semester of 2023. Call for Submissions, Power of Home Digital Art Contest

Deadline: October 15   Virginia Housing is celebrating its 50th anniversary by sponsoring a Power of Home digital art contest. The contest is open to all Virginians and will award a total of $20,000 to multiple winners across three categories – school-age students, adult amateurs and adult professionals. Craft Research Fund Project Grant

Deadline: October 21   The Project Grant is one of three categories that make up the Craft Research Fund, a visionary program dedicated to supporting scholarly craft research in the United States. Since 2005 the Center annually grants $95,000 to academic researchers, independent scholars, curators, and graduate students writing, revising, and reclaiming the history of craft. Grants up to $15,000 are awarded to support projects that encourage, expand, and support scholarly craft research in the United States. For more information, click here.

 

OAS Art Museum of the Americas Call for Trans, Non-binary, and Gender-diverse Artist — DC

Deadline: October  31   OAS Art Museum of the Americas (AMA) of the OAS Secretariat for Hemispheric Affairs (SHA), announces an open call to artists of the region to submit works addressing gender identity and expression, in order to stage an exhibition at the AMA. This program aims to strengthen and increase the visibility of the social, economic, cultural, civil, and political rights of trans, non-binary, and gender-diverse people in OAS Member States. Tour de Force Microgrants

Deadline: December 31   Tour de Force is a nonprofit organization that is committed to art and social impact. They support DMV-based artists, financially and logistically, by awarding monthly microgrants for ideas that have social impact, educational significance, and make the community better and more beautiful. They accept applicants on a rolling basis and the grants go towards a variety of projects, including, but not limited to, hosting classes or workshops, purchasing supplies, or the start-up costs for a community project. Call for Artists, Artsfairfax Sponsored Temporary Art Installations at Tysons Corner — Fairfax, VA

Deadline: December 31   From now through the end of the calendar year, Macerich and ArtsFairfax invite artists, artists teams, and arts organizations based in Fairfax County and the Cities of Fairfax and Falls Church to activate select retail storefronts and open spaces in the shopping center with visual art. Instructors Wanted at The Art League — Alexandria, VA

Deadline: Until filled   The Art League is looking for skilled instructors in all visual arts disciplines. We’re particularly keen to recruit new hires for our sculpture, stained glass, and watercolor departments. Preferred applicants will have a personable and patient disposition, excellent communication skills, and the ability to teach their medium to groups of beginning, intermediate, and/or advanced level students. Class sizes range, depending on enrollment, from around 5 to 30 students. Experience teaching is helpful but not an absolute requirement. Prince George’s Arts and Humanities Council (PGAHC) is featuring county artists at its newest art space Arts’tination at National Harbor, the premier arts and entertainment destination in our regions Located at 162 Waterfront Street, National Harbor, MD. Pyramid Atlantic Workshop Proposals – Hyattsville, MD

Pyramid Atlantic offers year-round workshops in printmaking, papermaking, book arts, and hybrids thereof. We offer multi-week, daytime, evening, and weekend intensives for adults in our fully equipped studios. 2020 has been dedicated to the Year of the Woman in Maryland. Call For Artists, Busboys and Poets

Busboys and Poets is looking for submissions from Maryland and Virginia artists as it expands to new locations in both areas. Submissions can include drawings, painting, photography, sculpture, mixed media, assemblage, fiber, quilts, etc. Art images reflecting life in the city, family, portraits, whimsy, abstraction, social uplift and life experiences within diverse cultures are encouraged for submission. Alterwork Studios Online Residency

This residency was designed to give emerging contemporary artists an online platform to create new work and explore their practice. Accepting Artwork for Curatorial Review by AIWA

The Alper Initiative for Washington Art features five exhibitions per year in the newly constructed first floor space in the American University Museum. We accept submissions, on a rolling basis,  from Washington artists of all ages and backgrounds, and working in diverse media. Call For Entry Hamilton Arts Collective Guest Artist Exhibition – Baltimore, MD

The Hamilton Arts Collective (HAC) and the Hamilton Gallery seek applications from artists for month-long Guest Artist exhibitions at Hamilton Gallery located at 5502 Harford Road, Baltimore, MD. The selected guest artists will be invited to exhibit a selection of their current work in Gallery I of the Hamilton Gallery. The Guest Artist exhibition is featured in Hamilton Gallery communications and will be promoted by the HAC and Hamilton Gallery. Howard County Arts Council Quarterly Call For Artists – Ellicott City, MD

The Howard County Arts Council gallery program was established to enhance the public’s appreciation of the visual arts, provide a venue to exhibit the work of local, regional, and national artists in a professional space, and provide leadership in the arts by presenting a broad spectrum of arts in all media from both emerging and established artists. Artists, ages 18 and older, working in all media and styles including time-based and installation artists, are encouraged to apply either individually or as a group. The Creativity Grant Program State of Maryland (MD)

Deadline: Rolling. The purpose of the Creativity Grant Program is to strengthen the vitality and sustainability of artists and small organizations to maintain a strong and stable arts infrastructure in the State of Maryland. The Creativity Grant also provides opportunities to serve the growing needs of relevant arts projects and collaborations within Maryland communities. Artist/Writers: Cover Art for Academic Medicine

Deadline: Rolling. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. The Awesome Foundation Accepting Applications for Art Projects

Deadline: Open. The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is a worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of “awesomeness in the universe.” Established in 2009, the foundation distributes $1,000 grants on a monthly basis to projects and their creators. The money is pooled from ten or more self-organizing “micro-trustees.” The chapters are autonomous and organized by the trustees around geographic areas or topics of interest. Call for Artists: Maryland Art Place Seeks Proposals for Rotating Exhibition Partnership with Baltimore’s Hotel Indigo (MD)

Peripheral ARTeries – Biennial Contemporary Art Publication

Deadline: Rolling. Peripheral ARTeries is looking for artists to be featured in the new special Biennial Edition of their art publication, that comes to its 10th edition. This opportunity is great for both established and early career artists who need a boost to their artist portfolio. The 10th edition will once again explore and show current trends and tendencies in Contemporary Art: Peripheral ARTeries cultivates a spirit of openness through a unique collaborative and participatory approach.Each artist may submit a maximum of three works or projects made in any technique: painting, drawing, video art, experimental cinema, fine art photography, experimental media, mixed media, installations, public art, performance. Exhibit at Hotel Indigo (VA)

Artists works will displayed in the hotel’s gallery (220 S Union St, Old Town Alexandria) for a six-month period. Two-dimensional, framed works only. Artists will install the work using the hotel’s mounting hardware. Labels will be provided by the hotel. All sales handled by artist, no commission. Craft Research Fund Project Grant

Deadline: October 21   The Project Grant is one of three categories that make up the Craft Research Fund, a visionary program dedicated to supporting scholarly craft research in the United States. Since 2005 the Center annually grants $95,000 to academic researchers, independent scholars, curators, and graduate students writing, revising, and reclaiming the history of craft. Deadline: August 27   Maryland Art Place (MAP), in partnership with the CyberWire, is pleased to announce an open ‘Call to Artists’. Deadline: September 2   Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS), with the Loudoun County School Board-appointed Douglass High School Commemorative Committee (DHSCC), seeks submissions for the design, creation, and placement of a mural on the outside wall of the gym adjacent to the basketball court at the Historic Douglass High School. Deadline: September 2   September is National Recovery Month. VisArts invites individuals to submit photographs/images/designs/artworks that address the struggle of addiction, the process of recovery, portraits of those we have lost to addiction and portraits of those who’ve found a path forward through recovery. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. The Awesome Foundation Accepting Applications for Art Projects

Deadline: Open. The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is a worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of “awesomeness in the universe.” Established in 2009, the foundation distributes $1,000 grants on a monthly basis to projects and their creators. The money is pooled from ten or more self-organizing “micro-trustees.” The chapters are autonomous and organized by the trustees around geographic areas or topics of interest. Call for Artists: Maryland Art Place Seeks Proposals for Rotating Exhibition Partnership with Baltimore’s Hotel Indigo (MD)

Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. The Awesome Foundation Accepting Applications for Art Projects

The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is a worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of “awesomeness in the universe.” Established in 2009, the foundation distributes $1,000 grants on a monthly basis to projects and their creators. The money is pooled from ten or more self-organizing “micro-trustees.” The chapters are autonomous and organized by the trustees around geographic areas or topics of interest. Call for Artists: Maryland Art Place Seeks Proposals for Rotating Exhibition Partnership with Baltimore’s Hotel Indigo (MD)

Artist/Writers: Cover Art for Academic Medicine

Deadline: Rolling. Submit original works of art inspired by, but not necessarily representative of, an academic medicine experience from any perspective: caregiver, researcher, teacher, learner, or patient (for example, learning how to be a physician or scientist, caring for patients, exploring research questions, making a new discovery, being a research participant, teaching, or being cared for in a teaching hospital). The journal welcomes photography, sculpture, painting, textile work, and other visual media. Images may be cropped or resized to fit into the allotted cover space. Artists must also submit a related Cover Art essay as a narrative companion to the artwork, to explain the connection between the work and the “academic medicine experience.” The related narrative should be 250 to 600 words and is subject to editing. The Awesome Foundation Accepting Applications for Art Projects

The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is a worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of “awesomeness in the universe.” Established in 2009, the foundation distributes $1,000 grants on a monthly basis to projects and their creators. This professional development program is being launched by the peer-reviewed journal American Art, which is co-published by the Smithsonian American Art Museum and University of Chicago Press. Deadline: September 2   Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS), with the Loudoun County School Board-appointed Douglass High School Commemorative Committee (DHSCC), seeks submissions for the design, creation, and placement of a mural on the outside wall of the gym adjacent to the basketball court at the Historic Douglass High School. The 10th edition will once again explore and show current trends and tendencies in Contemporary Art: Peripheral ARTeries cultivates a spirit of openness through a unique collaborative and participatory approach.Each artist may submit a maximum of three works or projects made in any technique: painting, drawing, video art, experimental cinema, fine art photography, experimental media, mixed media, installations, public art, performance. The call is open to all proposed kind of art and media capable of challenging the viewers’ traditional perspective on art itself. To submit, visit the Peripheral ARTeries website.

 

Exhibit at Hotel Indigo (VA)

Artists works will displayed in the hotel’s gallery (220 S Union St, Old Town Alexandria) for a six-month period. Two-dimensional, framed works only. Artists will install the work using the hotel’s mounting hardware. Labels will be provided by the hotel. All sales handled by artist, no commission. Summer Art Camp Interns Wanted at The Art League — Alexandria, VA

Deadline: Until Filled  The Art League has internships available during the summer. This is a great opportunity for high school graduates or college students to meet their collegiate internship requirements, or provide a valuable experience and references. Interns for those who work more than 200 hours will be given a stipend. They may also be approved to teach paid sessions towards the end of the summer if they meet the appropriate criteria.
